The ugly sonic wasn’t really a trick to give the movie more attention. The Ugly sonic design was official and even there was actual merch with the first design 😂 But because of the negative criticism, the director understood the fans and had to announce the changes. Also! Since you guys don’t know a lot of shadow’s backstory, all I can say is…… it’s so painful and heartbreaking that you won’t be able to blame him in why he’s doing this.

Shadow was created based on drawings that Gerald Robotnik discovered one day while exploring ruins. He discovered it and used them to design the ultimate life form. I do not recall if he found samples or not but anyway. Shadow was created as a potential cure for Maria Robotnik Gerald's granddaughter and Cousin to Ivo Robotnik. Shadow's purpose was to use his DNA to save her. Shadow and Maria became friends, Shadow accepted his purpose and wanted to save Maria. Sadly, Gun discovered Shadow and attacked the lab killing Maria during the process. Before they could catch Shadow, Maria sealed him away and sent the pod to safety where Shadow slept for decades. Her desire was to see Shadow become a beacon of hope and to help humanity.

Y'all NEED to get yourselves informed about Shadow, specifically Sonic Adventures 2. That's what this movie will be based on, but there's no guarantee it will be totally accurate. Shadow's story, though, is possibly the darkest in the entire Sonic franchise. He is a VERY complex character, and I can only hope this movie does him justice for people who know little to nothing about his lore. Also the guy at the end is Gerald Robotnik, OUR Robotnik's grandfather and Shadow's creator. There's a very dark, iconic moment in HIS story from the game, too, which I REALLY hope they use.

It might actually not be a good idea if you don't already know the lore. Yes, you can understand Shadow's _game_ lore by doing that, but we don't know how much the film lore is changing up the original lore. And the game lore so far already has changed quite a bit. I do wonder, though, if there's a reason Commander Walters knows so much about Shadow here. It could be they're going to bring back the GUN Commander's backstory from Shadow the Hedgehog with him literally knowing Maria from the past. He also remembered Project Shadow from the end of the second film, too. That said, he's still far, far different from the games GUN Commander. The GUN Commander blamed Shadow for Maria's death as well as the deaths of his family aboard the ARK, because he was only a little boy at the time, not knowing it was actually the GUN at that time who did it. This one clearly knows it wasn't Shadow's fault and Shadow has a tragic backstory, but also fully understands Shadow is a very serious threat that needs to be stopped. So he sympathizes with Shadow while recognizing Shadow is extremely dangerous, which is very different from Shadow the Hedgehog's GUN Commander (who still believes Shadow is evil long after he saved the world multiple times).

To explain Sonic characters a bit, they can be any type of animal. From mammals, reptiles, birds, sea creatures, bugs, and even a sentient plant at one point. The anthro-animal characters are commonly referred to as “Mobians” by the community and external media to differentiate them from the actual critters that Sonic rescues in the games. Of course there’s the “main” cast of characters that commonly appear in all or most Sonic media: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, and Rouge. But there are also other characters that appear every once in a while: Cream the Rabbit, Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, Charmy Bee, Silver the Hedgehog, Blaze the Cat, and E-123 Omega. The “big purple rabbit” Ruff was describing is Big the Cat, who’s essentially the running joke of the franchise in how he always finds himself in the weirdest of places and typically appears as a cameo. Mostly because players hated his levels in Sonic Adventure 1 (1998). Several games also have one-off characters that either return in promotional material/social media posts, or characters that were introduced and brought back decades later: Emerl, Chip, Mighty the Armadillo, and Ray the Squirrel. Recently, we’ve had a new character in Sonic Frontiers named Sage. She is an artificial intelligence that Eggman programmed to essentially be his daughter, and takes the form of a young white-haired girl in a dress. A very sweet and human moment for Eggman. And if you think the games have a lot of characters… hoo boy wait until you see the cartoons, comics, and side games. Countless characters that were made in the 90s and 2000s through external/side media would never return, and are mostly known by just Sonic fans (this includes Knuckles’ entire 35+ member family tree in the comics, because a certain controversial writer/illustrator, Ken Penders, was obsessed with Echidnas). The ongoing IDW comics also introduce many new characters who haven’t been put into motion yet, and only a select few have found themselves in side games. So… yeah. There’s a lot of Sonic characters. And those are just the good guys, there’s a lot of villains outside of Eggman as well: Chaos, Metal Sonic, Black Doom, Solaris, Erazor Djinn, Dark Gaia, The Dark Queen… the 2000s were a wild time for Sonic. There are also several human characters that show up on occasion. But outside of Eggman (and two, maybe three, characters in the new movie) they never really stick around or have much significant relevance to the Sonic story as a whole. But, that’s about most of what you gotta know about Sonic characters without spoilers or major plot details. And also because writing a 10 paragraph comment is a bit ridiculous. "Mobian" is never used in any game. The term "Mobian" comes from early western cartoon shows because they lived on a planet called Mobius, which was pulled from a mistranslation of something Yuji Naka said. Yuji Naka mentioned something about a "mobius strip" (think of a twisted rubber band) because of the twisting mobius strip-like platforms that can be seen in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3. This was mistaken to be saying the planet was called mobius and so the western comics used that term, while in-game whenever the planet's name is mentioned, its always just "Earth". I think actually the words Naka said translated to something like "mobius worlds", but again, he was referring to a mobius strip. There's even a level in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity called Mobius Strip... because the shape of the level is literally a Mobius Strip. No name is given for the Sonic-style 'anthro' characters, but they are individually called by the animal they're based on--Hedgehog, Echidna, etc.

Most of the Silver lore is explained in the IDW comics. I don't remember it all. Since y'all don't know Shadow's backstory, allow me to summarize: Shadow was a creature created by Gerald Robotnik (the guy at the end of the trailer) using DNA from an alien called "Black Doom," as part of an experiment used to cure his granddaughter; Maria on a spacecraft called the Ark. But when G.U.N./the government found out about the alien part, they raided the place & killed everyone who knew. But Maria launched Shadow to Earth before they got to him, but Maria was caught in a crossfire & gunned down. Hence why Shadow is so angry & vengeful.

You guys need to watch the cutscenes of Sonic Adventure 2 because Sonic Movie 3 takes inspiration from that game where Shadow was first introduced in the Sonic games and talks about his origin story. And suppose you want to play a game that better helps you understand Shadow’s past and motivations. In that case, a game coming out in October called Sonic X Shadow Generations and an animation prologue of that game called Sonic X Shadow Generations Dark Beginnings is coming in November. You may also check the cutscenes from Shadow’s solo game from 2005, but it has multiple endings. But take a look at it because the trailer looks like it took elements from that game, especially his motorcycle 🦔🖤❤️

Maria unfortunately lost her life when G.U.N./the government sent a raid on the ark in order to capture Shadow and use him for warfare and Gerald to continue working experiments, everyone else on the Ark, they order to ‘silence’ ie terminate everyone else who knew about Project Shadow. In an attempt to get Shadow off the Ark safely, Maria was gunned down by a G.U.N. soldier after releasing him in a pod.

Shadow's teleportation is actually Chaos Control. Which in the games and comics (and shows I'm pretty sure) has been used to teleport very large objects before.

if i recall, the story with the design change goes something like this: the initial design was focus-grouped into existence, with small kids and teens being the target audience, but not specifically gamers who know what sonic is. then the first trailer dropped and twitter got ahold of it. what followed was something like 3 months of the most extreme razzing you've ever seen, which caused sega and paramount's stocks to drop noticably. the animation company stepped forward on paramount's behalf and said a combination of "we told them from the start" and "we understand you're angry", then the animation director announced on twitter that sega marketing had gotten involved. after that, everyone goes silent for like, a week, and then the animation director announces on twitter that the suits at paramount had been convinced of the error and that the animation studio was working to correct the design. movie was delayed about 4-6 months. a little bit later, the second version of trailer 1 dropped with the updated design, at which point everyone breathed a sigh of relief. movie was a success, etc. then paramount's executives had their revenge and closed the animation studio that had just pulled them from the fire, citing that it wasn't performing to their standards. nobody knows for sure, but we're all pretty convinced it was because the change to the design was costly and the suits didn't like the backtalk they got on their design.

If you don’t know: the guy at the end with Eggman is his grandfather: Gerald Robotnik who is also the grandfather of Maria and the creator of Shadow. In the games, he was executed by the government so it was surprising to see him alive in the movie.

So this is not a spoiler because it was all in the end credit scene of the second Sonic Movie. The military found a secret one of their bases, which has been closed off since the (I think 70s), that was run by a "Robotnik", current Robotnik's grandfather, a facility containing "Project Shadow". Shadow's story is deeply rooted with Robtonik's grandfather.

To know Shadow’s story, you gotta start with Sonic Adventure 2, then Sonic Heroes, then Shadow’s own game. But keep in mind with Shadow’s game, most of the events are basically what if scenarios & alternate timelines, with the actual true canon part happening at the very end.

6:15 Well, when it comes to the Velma thing. It's very likely that they had a certain number of episodes in agreement. Usually, when a show is commissioned, they go by episode number rather than seasons. So the 2 seasons of Velma was pretty much a done deal before the first episode dropped.

The Sonic movies honestly have one of the most heartwarming stories of how they went from a film everyone called dead in the water when the first trailer dropped, actually listening to fans and going back to fix things even though it cost more money and delayed the movie by several months, released to generally positive reactions, released the 2nd movie to massive positive fan response and pretty decent critical response, and by the time of this 3rd movie, is a genuinely hugely successful series!

Just the visuals, Jimmy Carrey back as Eggman, who is now working with Sonic & even Eggman's dad (who I believe was person who experimented on Shadow), have me HYPED! I was able to talk to one of the animators that worked on Sonic. Unfortunately, they did listen to fan feedback, I really wish it was a marketing ploy. They worked overtime to fix it to how it is now.
