Many years ago I put together a survival tote to carry in the trunk all the time. In the PNW, you never know what the weather can throw at you and with the traffic situation as it is, you never know when you could be sitting in a miles long parking lot for hours. Water, energy bars, paper towels, blankets, flashlights, reading material, etc. I also threw an empty backpack just in case I need to walk away from the car. Transfer everything into the backpack and you have something to help you out. I have never had to use it, but it sure gives me peace of mind. It always amazes me that people go where they do with no thought of "what if". No water at all and you are driving into a desert sandy area? Wow!

I tried helping a Blazer who got stuck in the snow yesterday. We saw the wind blow him just far enough to hit the soft shoulder and swerve off into the ditch, completely high centered. Unfortunately my hitch shackle turned out to not be in the car so I couldn't use my kinetic rope, and I couldn't get him out with just a strap. Got him back about 18" but that was all she wrote. Can't wait for my Matt's Rope and soft shackle to arrive, got the shipping notification that afternoon, haha. Next time I'll be able to get them the few feet farther to reach the pavement (Also, be EXTREMELY careful helping people in blizzard conditions, if that doesn't go without saying. It doesn't do much good to stop to help if someone hits you. We do utility work so we had lights, hi-vis vests, etc and I had my partner watching for/directing traffic while we attempted to get him unstuck. If you not positive you can help safely just leave it to the professionals like Matt.)

Living in what we on the east coast call mountains, I carry snow chains. Even a two wheel drive pickup truck with chains can get out of a foot of snow. A winter vehicle kit consisting of a heavy coat, wool blanket, a Mylar space blanket, first aid kit, toilet paper and plastic bags, shovel, a long handle snow scrapper, and a piece of carpet will make -20 below zero temperatures livable. Storing water inside a vehicle usually ends up with a bottle of ice or empty bottles that melted then soaked whatever they were around.

So before digging a hole with your tires do this instead: The wheels that are stuck are the ones not turning. Equalize the traction between all the wheels creating all wheel drive by pressing lightly on the brake pedal and the accelerator at the same time. This negates the slip differential thus equalizing the traction - not one wheel pulling in the front and one in the back. Got that from a 1947 MJ Jeep manual on tips and tricks for four wheel drive problems.
