Thanks Maria! These are some great suggestions, and I can see some to apply to my own CV. Regarding date spans in education, as a hiring manager I personally thinks this matters less after a few years in industry. Industry experience outweighs academic experience, so unless the academic project was super cool and relevant, I'm fine just seeing the project title and degree date to tick the boxes.

Hi Billy! Thanks for the input! Agreed industry experience matters more. The date ranges were often confusing for the CVs we reviewed where we'd realize they were still in school and had included only the starting year, so when seeing many CVs it wasn't clear to us if the one date shown was the degree date or start date! I guess you would necessarily get current students mixed in with folks who have industry experience for the same job, so maybe it's less confusing in real life stacks of resumés?

I think this advice is helpful for ANY CV not just Genomics. I am not even in Genomics and I took a lot away from this talk!

Damn, I think I made almost all the mistakes, especially with the skills section. At least I think I did well with the "add evidence to your resume" advice. Recruiters usually appreciate that I link to my gitbub account, orcid, and even my small youtube channel. It may be small, but it’s a good way to show that I can navigate a Linux environment and program in it. Thanks a lot for these tips!

Hey, thank you for this video! This was super useful, since I have a lot of things that are wasting space on my CV. One thing I didn't quite understand is why you don't want recruiters to call you? I imagine you could miss out on an interview if they prefer calling you but can't find a number. Unless you're THE candidate they're looking for, of course. (which probably applies to you in many cases ^^)

Do you often get recruiters calling you from your resumé instead of emailing? Because I have only ever seen it started by email, and then you will likely schedule a time for a phone call when you will actually be ready to impress. I wouldn't want recruiters calling me while I'm in the shower or in a meeting at my current job. But it doesn't hurt to keep a phone number on the CV if you don't mind getting calls from unknown numbers at random times, having to worry about whether every spam call could be important :)

@@OMGenomics I see your motivation to not have a phone number :D But yes, the two jobs I have received so far were initiated through (random) phone calls after I had sent in my CV. I think I had to then tell one of them that I was busy but would call them back later. (I'd prefer using Mail too, but I'll leave the phone number on there for those who just have to have a phone number)

nah the driver's license one makes sense, i've seen a lot of positions prefer it, cuz the ability to drive to the place to get samples from is useful apparently
@OMGenomicsАй бұрын
Maybe for a wet lab technician, but these are bioinformatics positions! Bioinformaticians usually don't touch the samples at all, let alone drive to pick them up... What kind of positions have you seen ask for a driver's license?
