That swappable battery is the concept I want to see, but it absolutely needs to get modular and interchangeable module. I'd be so interested IF I could use it as powerbank for like lawnmovers etc. We absolutely need some opensource thing from manufacturers where they commit to make certain standard connection, size and voltage. Just make the batterypacks modular to increase in size. When that happens and I'm sure that it's mandatory to happen, I'm very very interested in (also) small electric vehicles. I want to ie. insert battery to my solarpower system for recharge and use as powerbank there. I want to be able to take that battery to completely other uses too. Why you industry giants can't accomplish that? Heck you've pretty much standardized everything else, but this proprietary battery thing doesn't work in long run. Please make it happen 🙏🏻

Come on MCN, really you need to get your facts straight and not regurgitate the same old myths over and over. * - 2000 cycles is to 80%. You can still use the battery long after that. And 2000 cycles is what…10 years or 50 thousand miles! * - Batteries are 98% recyclable. * - Nearly half of new batteries made now don’t use cobalt. LFP for example. * - Even if you made the electricity from burning coal (which we don’t) the whole life emissions of an EV are half that of a fossil fuel vehicle. This was proven way back in 2009 by the King review.

The fact that making a battery powered vehicle makes 80% more emissions than a ICE version to make that one time, equivalent to driving between .5 and 3.5 years, is more than made up for by the fact it reduces emissions by two thirds all the time it is used (MIT study using US power grid). Putting doubt in people's minds is oil industry FUD. You have to go to Poland with their Soviet era coal fired power plants to find any cause for pause. Also, how many kilometres/miles usually go on a bike before it's worn out? In North America, the battery should last the life of the bike for a normal user. For instance, the Piaggio 1 active's battery is rated to go 52800 kms (800 full cycles X range in sport mode) at up to 38 mph. That's a pretty high mileage for an in-town scooter. That's around 10 years of work commuting to an office 10 kms away.

I agree with you that the battery capacity is a problem. Do you think it´s a problem with the motor characteristics and "feel" when riding a electric vehicle? For me the problem as well is the characteristics and sound of electrical vehicles, which for me is a major part in riding a mc. It´s more a problem than the range of batteries, for me. Electrical "motorcycles" are just a sewing machine with two wheels and a very annoying engine "whining sound." Compare this to my f750GS. which has an ICE engine that sounds and feels in the vibrations like, in my opinion, an engine, it has good range, good Euro exhaust rating so no local pollution and above all it´s a joy to ride a MC for me. Ok, my car can be electric, the bus I sit on can be electric, I don´t care if trucks are electric. But I will never EVER ride a electric sewing machine with two wheels, even if it´s called a "motorcycle" by others. Take care! BR

For a start, that ships fire wasn't caused by the EV's. Secondly, sythentic fuel is about 6quid+ a litre, I'm pretty sure i'd rather charge a battery for less than 1/10th of the cost. Solid state batteries have been promised by Toyota and the likes for about 20 years and still nowhere near in-market - they just say that every year to keep people waiting and buying their ICE vehicles because they missed the curve with EV's.

I'm not electric fanboy, but I fully agree there. It's very hyppocrite to say mining for battery materials is filthy. Let's face it. Pretty much all mining for nickel, zinc, iron, coal etc. etc. etc. IS environment effecting production in many locations around the globe. But ie. Finland is launching some lithium mining operations and I'd very much suspects that it's fairly enviromentally safe production location compared to countries like Russia, many eastern countries that don't give a flying f about end results.

I'm not electric fanboy, but I disagree with you. There's already very stable battery technologies. I can't recall the name, but there is very similar power density tech that's very stable. I'm not fully sure but I think it's lifepo, possibly? It's there if you search for it. Businesses just need to make them safe.

@@andrewstorm8240Actually very legit point. At home looking around and within less than minute I can think of about 10 lithium powered devices. Thinking how much there are them in every single modern households, it's quite surprising how little incidents happen. Absolutely not saying they're safe, but I can't recall any nearby household fires from them. But I immeadiately remember about three petrol engine car fires from little amount of people I know and they've been all like 10 year old cars, all within like 5 years 🤷🏻

@@allwheeldrive I tried an electric bicycle. This was enough for me. I will never buy an electric sewing machine with two wheels, even if it´s called a "motorcycle" by manufacturers or anyone else. I can accept having an electric car, although not willingly. I could accept an electric bicycle, although I can´t imagine I would ever need one (a normal bicycle is fine for me. I don´t need a motor on a bicycle). But I will never, ever, ride a electric sewing machine with two wheels, I will stick to normal motorcycles. The engine characteristic, exhaust sound and vibrations in the chassi are wayyyy to important to me. I´d rather travel (by planes?) to other countries to ride a normal petrol motorcycle than any electric "motorcycle", or not ride at all. Take care. Br.

Electrical ”motorbikes” are all just sewing machines with two wheels. No experience of an internal combustion engine and the vibrations in the chassi from the ICE, no manual gears, no exhaust system, just a irritating electric engine noise. I will never ride an electric sewing machine with two wheels, whether it called electric ”motorcycle” or not. Also the electricity is often produced using fossil fuels, e.g. coal power plants. Br. Ps. The only exception, perhaps, being a scooter for commuting shorter distances, maybe I could try this. Take care! Br.

That's you. But ie. your grandchildren might have very different view. I love bikes. I have three of them right now, but I'd be willing to use ie. electric car or bike as commuter if it's efficient and cheap to drive/ride. Also as interested in enduro and owning one and being privlidged to ride in one of the cleanest natural environments where I live, I'd be interested in well performing enduro bike even from local pollution standpoint, although that's likely not going to happen in near future. Tech is just not there.

@@jothain Thanks for your reply! =) - I understand you. I like your interest in nature and environment. I also think the same about nature and environment. - Regarding local pollution, I guess e.g. the Euro 5/6-standard and catalysator assure there is no harmful local pollution from petrol engines, especially lower consumption engines like motorcycles in city. I guess almost all exhaust is CO2. (Diesel truck, busses and cars, however, might be local polution in a city). - Don´t forget that electricity is produced in many cases by fossil fuel, e.g. coal. And e.g. Germany no has no nuclear electricity power plants, they shut all of the down. - Electrical sewing machine "motorcycles" are not anything I will use. Ever. I´d rather travel (with planes?) to other countries to ride ICE motorcycles. I don´t care if it´s hydrogen, petrol or something else. But I will only ride a bike with the same motor-, sound, performance and handling characteristic as an normal ICE motorcycle. Exception being, maybe, an electrical scooter for short commuting in a city =) Take care! BR.

@@mhult5873 Yeah, modern bikes are quite good on environment, but I still ride 2000's carburated XT that doesn't know anything about euro standards. @@jothain ZZR1400 is a nice bike! I didn´t know what MC a ZZR1400 is, but checked on google. That´s a very, very nice bike! =) I would love to try it. What year is your bike made? How is it to ride? Is it called "Ninja"? Sorry for my lack of knowledge. I have seen (and dreamed) about a ninja when I was a teenager and when I was around 20 years old. Me, I got my first "bike", a 125 CC Kawasaki AR 125, I believe 1987 year model, in the mid 90:s. I got my normal "full size" MC driving license about two years ago, but could afford a bike at that time. A few months ago, however, I did buy my first bike, a f750GS =) And I love that bike, I might never sell it ever. The sound from both the exhaust, engine, even when putting it in first gear from neutral is sounding incredible. (As with all motorcycles with gears) =) I love riding it, it´s a big part of my spare time now. Would be great to meet up and ride someday! I plan to do some touring in Europe someday. I live in south of Sweden, do you happen to live nearby?

Before offering your sage perspective, it might be a good idea to ACTUALLY spend real time with an EV. We've had a Model 3 in our family for three years, several friends have had 3s and Ss for several more years than us. A few are already on their second one, one is about to pop for a third. Two-wheelers have a ways to go before they are consumer-level daily drivers, except for those who truly don't need more than "just enough." Soon enough battery and charging tech will allow not only this market to flourish, but we'll also see electric flying vehicles of all sorts, not to mention large transports like semis, trains, and ocean-going vessels. The ownership experience does NOT take anything away from the pleasure of driving: it's different, NOT bad. In fact, in many instances being actually able to hear sounds around you is a major perk, especially because of the instant torque, utter smoothness, and complete lack of fumes making their way into your nostrils, eyes, and clothing. I still have one ICE liter bike and two cars, and they just provide a different set of positive experiences. Change is hard, no?

You don't mention the type of batteries in it, so how do you know they are made from a dirtier process than ICE metals and oil? Do you think ICE Honda's are made in England, or shipped from the other side of the world? 2.5k charges are over a decade of daily use. Would an ICE scooter need a rebuild by then? Perhaps perform some proper journalist fact-finding, before making hard and fast judgments? E.g. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5yQfaGLjqqLq68
