We rode for 30 HOURS to find a way out of the remote PNW Wilderness | Episode 2

I’ve had to turn around on that trail before riding solo with just a hand saw. It’s pretty a pretty unforgiving area, and all the side hill on that trail makes going around and over logs pretty futile. Chainsaw is pretty much mandatory. I’ve cut like 15 trees out on it even though it was clear the weekend before hahah. Glad you made it out ok and learned for next time. That’s what it’s all about.

I think the video barely does this trail justice. It is one of the most rugged trail I have ridden. Not to mention, it completely pushed my 501 to the limits of what it's capable doing. I'm very happy we brought the chainsaw, but I think it would have been better to bring extensive backup fuel for the saw so we could cut everything we encountered.. I think you're right tho. The trail is still going to have new issues if I went back to ride it tomorrow.. I'm glad we made it out too. The final video in this mini series really shows how rough it got by the end of it all. Such an amazing learning experience for me tho. Its 90% of the reason I wanted to publish the videos- to show how this type of stuff happens.

If you enjoy that type of riding. You should look into a saw rack for the front of your bike. Couple different good options out there. If you want to keep it street legal with a headlight you need to do some custom stuff brackets etc, but it makes it much easier to get the saw on and off. You don’t need to put the bar on and off every time. And each log you get to isn’t such a bummer. Lots of option for small arborist saws at different price points that fit on the front of the bike no problem. Your bike looks like it’s really well set up for dual sport but when it get to gnarly singletrack, it’s pretty bulky with the saddle bags and what not. Just something to think about. I appreciate you man! I have been looking into a custom bracket as we speak! I definitely want to keep it street legal, but after I finish some client work, I am really going to look into upgrading the 501 even more. I really want to get that custom saw mount, some braces for my radiators and linkage, a new clutch (maybe a rekluse), and I need to help it run cooler. I gotta increase my oil volume and maybe get that Boyesen water pump. Storage is a whole other issue of its own. Since I bring alot of camera gear with me, I either have to pack gear on the bike or in my vest. Each has its own drawbacks..

Bill Dart makes the rack in use. It’s light and low profile. You can add a small 6 in light bar under it and wire it into your harness for a decent headlight option.

I was riding in Idaho just last weekend, and I can tell you one thing - While there are TONS of moto trails, some don't get ridden much at all, and just because it's on the map doesn't mean it even exists anymore. I had to turn back 4 times in one day because trails either disappeared or were blocked by private property.

I used to be on the board for Idaho Dept of Parks and recreation OHV division. When you encounter trails fading out or dead ended at private property, you need to contact parks and recreation an get in touch with a motorized program coordinator. Give them as much information as possible. The reason I encourage you to do this is because Park and Rec have trail ranger crews that may get authorization to clear out and remark trails before they are lost. Parks and Rec has also successfully made arrangements to either get an easement across private land or else reroute trails around the private land.

@@madjack_757 That would be great. One of the biggest issues we have are trails in legally open areas that are disappearing back to nature. All trails are an invaluable asset to single track riders like us. It's important to have them analyzed by the OHV trail rangers to see if the trails can or should be re-established for use.

I have rode and camped on about every trail and ancient road I could find in the mountains of my area and I did a lot of it on a Honda 185 with a 90T sprocket on the rear. A smaller bike gives u a lot more control and the low speed, high tork will climb a tree if it gets traction. Thanks for the footage, it brings back a lot of great memories..

Thanks for the video. Man - This trail and trails like it need a work crew of volunteers - before they disappear. Literally a crew walking in, with brushers, chainsaws, rock bars and some tread tools. It's important for the crew to be on foot so they can brush the entire trail. When you ride in with tools you tend to only stop at the worst areas.

This seems like an adventure from my seat here at the computer. In real-life your situation at the end of this episode is very serious. You have put yourselves in what could easily be a life-threatening situation. I appreciate you and your friend's calm demeanor during all of this. That is helping you manage tremendously. But man! Yeah it was very real. Though give us a bit of credit- I studied the trail on a map and had my GPS. We ultimately reached a fork in the trail off camera between E-2 and E3 where it was unmarked. I pulled out my gps and it placed us on the "popular route" out of the mountain instead of the quickest. That caused us to take the right path instead of the left. That essentially sent us down the start of a new trail at 9:30 at night. In everything I studied, there was never a mention of this fork in the trail. Also, we never expected it to be anything other than a single trail that went from point to point.

Man what an awesome series. I have a 22 fe501 also, and I went ahead bought a second wheel set, one has dual sport knobbies and the other has an irc ve33s and a gummy front as well. The tires make such a big difference when taking a big bike like these through tight singletrack. Definitely helps tone down the struggle lol

It's not my best riding, and I think it really shows the effects of severe fatigue on your riding. There have only been a few moments in my life where I have felt as physically tired as I did by the end of this video and I think its a really good learning point for both me and the people viewing this video. Pack for the ride and for repairs, but also pack things like electrolytes or food items to give some quick energy. That has definitely been one of my takeaways from this experience.

I do a fair amount a big rides in ID and raced MTB, I learned early on...always throw a handful of energy gels in bottom of pack, they'll keep ya moving and keep your brain functioning...nothing worse than tired, discouraged and low on blood sugar. Looking forward to next video!!

Nice video, and as a person that has ridden some nasty deer trails, I feel your pain. The thing with my deer trails though is that they were not MILES long with dozens of trees to get around. I have been riding in the Sawtooths for about 2 years with my family, every bike from my little brothers Honda 50, to our friends Husky 300 2 stroke. We have almost gotten stuck overnight on the trail countless times. Idaho single track is so unforgiving and barely gets ridden and maintained all the way through. The terrain is rocky with thick brush and plants over the trail so you can't see the rocks poking out in some spots. Speaking of that I had to push my little sisters 110 out of a trail that we were miles into already because of rocks like that, she had a cracked case and was leaking oil. Othertimes the trail is full of downed trees that you can't get around so you need to bushwack a new trail. Othertimes your on a 7 inch wide trail with a cliff off to your side. So for anyone thinking that this is easier than it looks, its not, especially when your tired and feel like your just trying to survive. Also, Madjack, is this a 501 or a 701 that your riding, becasue it sounds like a big CC four stroke husky. Either bike would be impressive to ride on that kind of terrain.

I think people who ride out here consistently have stories like you and I do. I'm glad you and your family have made it out safe during your rides I'm riding a 2022 FE501S and yeah she is a beast to manhandle on these trails. Huge power, heavy bike, and takes really methodical clutch and throttle work in these tight trails. Though, a lot of times it comes across as "sloppy" when I am trying to man handle the bike.

@@madjack_757 Yeah, I ride a 2021 Honda 250F, which is one of the most underpowered and heavy 250s ever made, in my opinion. It weighs 265 wet, and Google says your bike weighs 253 wet, while being twice my engine displacement, which is crazy. Sometimes I will ride my dads Honda 300L and that thing weighs roughly 330 pounds with all the rally upgrades we have done to it. It is also very underpowered and heavy and wide, like a mini KLR. I started riding under 2 years ago and the 250 is my first bike and its a blessing and curse. It's a blessing becasue its usually the hardest bike to get through the hard enduro out of any group I ride in and it forces me to be a very technical rider and use the clutch to my advantage. But its a curse becasue I have gotten so good on it that I am always wanting to ride someone else's more powerful bike. So I'm hoping to get a Shirco, Beta, or a Husky as my hard enduro bike soon.

Yeah I use Garmin to navigate in the backcountry, but the issue in this scenario is the fateful flaw that happened right after the end of this video. We reached an unmarked split in the trail and my gps put us on the “popular” route instead of the quickest one. The route it put us on sent us back into the mountains instead of out of the trail. By the time we realized the mistake, it was too late.. I’m stoked you’re liking the channel man 🤟🏼🤟🏼

I had no spare fuel but I have a pretty great oversized tank that lets me go over 100 miles easily. For carter we had a couple liters of extra premix in his pack 🤟🏻

Of course! I hope it helped some bit. Yeah my garmin sent us on the "popular" route instead of the quickest way.. Really a rough turn of events to have it send us back into the mountains at dark.. I'm glad we made it out safe too. It was a really valuable experience to learn from for me. That day where we rucked our bikes over the logs was BRUTAL hahahaha. I'm right there with you . Gotta gotta have that saw now. I'm currently working on some video projects out east with some clients, but when I get back I'll let you know if I am headed back out! I'm hoping the smoke clears soon too.. I heard its a mess out there with the fires right now.

Thanks! The views are a benefit to the adventures I would have wanted to have even if the channel didn't exist. Though, this experience really made me take a step back from single track for a while. I didn't touch my bike for two weeks after it happened. It was just too nerve wracking.. I really do think we made a great team and I really really valued carter's ability to keep morale up. I started to lose steam, but he never lost his temper.

@@madjack_757 - yip I picked that up too, Carter seems like the kinda person who can take a massive amount of pressure and just brush it off with positivity and humour (real tough guy...but hey his riding outfit says it all - legend). I have a 701 and also enjoy single track. I did something dumb last year just as winter seemed to vanish: rented a van in March and aimed at a tough trail in the mountains that I really love. Days were still short and up there the ice was still very present cos u know how nothing dries up in the shade. No mobile reception. Even came across my first wolf (20m from me). Got to a point where I could not turn back and by the grace of G found traction with my big girl just barely in time to make it out of there (risked freezing to death should anything have gone seriously wrong). I am 51 this year so one would expect wisdom! We need to find that balance between fun and death. I have a pic of that day and you have a great vid to show ur grandchildren. U were brave and immensely skilled. Thanks for sharing your journey bud.

@@madjack_757 - I am in the North of Italy (Mount Penice specifically which is not that high compared to the Alps that are snowy till July) and the last thing I was expecting to see was a wolf so trust me I was sh*tting myself (here we are not even allowed to carry) and for me there was not an option to turn back since the single track was tight and iced. It came walking towards me and I thought I was dealing with a sheep dog and then as I clicked that it was not a sheep dog but that I was the sheep fortunatelly it just changed direction and jumped into a bush and disappeared. Passing near that bush was a mind f*ck of note...believe me. I later bumped into a woodcutter and asked him if I was dreaming and he told me "no actually there are quite a few here!!". I got home and did some google checks and it appears there are indeed many...I learnt something that day ;-) .

I have definitely thought about it. I will say, this trail took my 501 to the furthest limit I ever rlly want to push that bike. I think one of those 300s would have made my life much easier.

Man i was literally talking out loud watch the rock! As you slapped it and took a spill! You definitely lucked out. I'd invest in a ratchet towing system incase that happens when you're alone so you won't get stuck and always bring camping gear and Garmin! You never know! Still if im ever out that way I'd love to ride my billy goat tw through these trails! Did you guys underestimate the length of trail? Take a wrong turn? Now I'm going to watch part 3 maybe that will answer my questions 😅

Definitely take a look at part three! All your questions will be answered 🤟🏻 I agree with you though. A towing rope would have been HUGE out there and I wish I brought one. I think there were a lot of times where he and I simply just got lucky. At a minimum I think I should have had my bivy too. I can survive without the tent but my bivy makes such a difference.

Will you ever ride this trail again? What was the approximate length in miles of this trail? How many trail miles did you ride the next day to get off the trail? I've ridden in fire scorched dirt like you encountered on a lot of this trail - it's so loose, even when it's damp. My smashed right foot last weekend was in dirt just like that (from a previous forest fire)

Honestly, this looks like no fun at all, just torture, can't get any speed going, constantly terrified of rolling off the trail and you and your bike ending up in the river which would be a catastrophe way out there, like that @15:49. Maybe on a little crf125, but those big bikes look like they take a lot of energy to man handle around on the boulders.

Super awesome video miss doing shit like that when I was a young buck. We only had 2 strokes back then if you was lucky enough to have a 4 stroke it wasn't no electric start lol. But yeah I just new in video one your battery was going to crap out you shut it down way to much. I learned the hard way when I got my first electric start. Lol keep up the good work nice videos and talking letting people know how hard beautiful and dangerous it can be out there.best to have someone with you and yes definitely a big caliber gun.

I'm stoked you liked the videos! What bike did you ride when you were younger? I used to build old YZs. I had a 1974 yz125 and 1979 YZ250. Yeah.. my battery ultimately went out because I was running my baja designs headlight, charging my camera gear, and powering my gps all while going SLOW on the bike. I should have thought of it being an issue.. It really can be some unforgiving country out there.. I am so glad I had my friend there with me. Yeah soon I want to upgrade to a 10mm or 357 magnum!! Any suggestions?
