Riding into BACKCOUNTRY IDAHO in search of a CRASHED PLANE..

Every year I ride this single track trail system as the kickoff to the alpine single track season. Deep in the backcountry, this trail hides a secret- the remains of an 80+ year old plane crash...
As snow recedes, backcountry trail systems and the secrets they hold begin to reveal themselves. This one in particular, holds the remains of a plane that crashed during WW2. All eight airmen survived, though three of them left on foot with limited rations and a shotgun to get help. The remaining 5 hid within the wreckage of their plane. After 14 days, the men were rescued.
To this day, the plane wreckage lies where it crashed decades ago.
Enjoy the video!

Eh... Dude, you can't mention something as easy to research as the plane crash and expect your trails to stay "yours".
@madjack_757
@madjack_757 2 күн бұрын
@@phillhansen7238 The idea is that the people you don't want to see out on the trail typically don't go to effort of researching an area. Most areas have some sort of online trace even if its just some moto forum from 13 years ago. By not directly spoon feeding people trail names, coordinates, details of how to get places, etc.. It leaves some work involved for people to find these places. I believe those who research how to find them are usually more respectful of the areas.

Yesterday I went on an ATV trail in Idaho, and I had to cut at least 10 trees out of the trail. I have a TW200, and I would never take that bike where I went yesterday! Soooooo many rocks, the loose ones AND the embedded ones made for a tough ride. I actually came very close to going over backwards with my Polaris Trail 570. That scared me. I actually have a Ryobi 18 volt 12" chain saw that I can carry on my TW200. I made a holder for my rear rack. You go so fast. I do not go fast on either my quad or my TW. Momentum is king in most places, but you can have momentum without speed, like you did with the roots. I am 77 years old, so that may have something to do with the speed thing, although, even when I was younger, I was not very fast. The only time that I did well on a 100 mile cross-country was if the route was hard. Unlike some of the trails that you ride, I think that I could do this one on my TW. I love that little bike. 99% of the riding that I do is alone, so I always have my PLB (Personal Locater Beacon) with me. Do you ride with one of those? Crap happens, one minute you are cruising along, and the next you are trapped under your bike. Happened to me, I think that I told you about it on another video. Nice video. I especially love the drone shots. The front fender camera shots, not so much.
@madjack_757
@madjack_757 6 күн бұрын
I'm glad you liked the video! I'm not surprised you had so much deadfall. Idaho has had a huge amount of downed trees this season.. I try to find my max speed and then take it down a couple notches so that I can keep control of the bike. That TW would be PERFECT on this trail!! Technical riding is the great equalizer for fast riders. I always always carry a Garmin In-Reach which allows me to send messages and call a helicopter if necessary. I always carry it in an accessible location just in case what happened to you happens to me!!
@BuilderofRat
@BuilderofRat 6 күн бұрын
@@madjack_757 Yea, that was so scary. I would have taped out, but I would feel bad for dragging out Search and Rescue just to lift the bike off my leg. I carry mine in my hydration pack, so if the bike or quad goes over a cliff, hopefully I am not with it. LOL I do most of my riding within 150 miles of Pocatello, but I will keep that trail on my bucket list.

Thanks! Welcome back to the riding community 👊🏼 This region can be everything from expert level to pretty mellow. This particular trail for me is about a 5.5/10 or maybe a 6/10. That being said, if you ride too early into the season out here, bring a chainsaw or be good at hopping over logs. Early season conditions can turn this trail into a 8.5/10. You ought to try riding out there mid summer-fall and when it is fall, the colors are fantastic!

Not really into the super technical single track, or atleast not a lot of it, so it was nice in that regard.
