@@goofy4birds A LAN connection does not require internet! You do not need an internet connection for LAN games! In other words - you only need 2 x PCs and a small LAN cable to play games against each other.

Guys up with your spirits. It seems like you are focusing so much about your destinations. Yes it is natural to focus on the destination. But sailing it is not the destination that is always the most important but the journey. As it is with life. Accept all a trip offers you, ups and downs, and enjoy the ride and bring the spirits higher. I was watching Sailing with Thomas, sailing solo, the other day sailing from Tahiti to Tonga and he was all the time on high spirits and positive enjoying the ride not caring if the trip could take more. Actually loving it if the trip was longer. Sailors in the old days have been sailing without all the technology we have today at all!!! And you are two on board not solo. The boat is safe and sound and none of you have suffered any serious injuries. Don't make it so hard for your selves psychologically. Cheer up.

Another great video guys, thanks. I was walking round the marina today walking my dog Captain and stopped to chat to a guy in the yard who was working on his 39 year old Rival, same as yours, after chatting for a while I asked him if he watched the sailing brothers. Yes answered enthusiastically and went on to say you inspired him to buy and do up his Rival. See what a great job you are doing 👏😀

Hey guys! Just noticed on sailing with Thomas that he found downwind sailing wire out parts on the mast head. So he sail on a tack off the wind and ya hat stops the rock and roll and the wearing of top standing rigging. He showed exactly this in his last video . And he did 40 plus miles more than wing on wing straight down wind. Works for him maybe you too. All the best!

Don't be down guys - it could be worse - you could have been infested by cheese mites. Now thats got you worried. But stop and buy an emergency antenna as well as replacements for the AIS and VHF ones. That way if your aerials take a dive into the briny then you plug in the emergency one and carry on. Great poem by the way.

I have had passages when the sun finally came up, we could see the size of the seas and thought, oh crap, I think I liked it when I didn’t realize how big the seas were! I made a lot of passages before AIS, radar, chart plotters and GPS. Had to use a sextant. And you REALLY had to keep a watch! And yes, you do have a very nice boat. Beautiful and squared away. So is the crew. Ha ha.

Nice poetry, well done! Sailing really begins when the rails are in the water! You should buy a spare antenna along with a 20' coax cable. Connect the antenna to one end, then switch the other end at the back of the radio/AIS. Run the antenna out and temporarily secure it as high as you can safely. 👍

Guys Regarding your sail selection. 1. twin heads great idea. 2 main halyard attached at the stern, good idea, you are right with twin headsails there is a lot of stress on the mast , all at the top. 3 did you consider running the mainsail with two reefs but Centered tightly amid ships - where it holds little or no wind… … Sheeted tightly amidships in this way, the mainsail balances the force of the two headsails, and takes a lot of strain off of the mast…? Just my thinking…
@neilquigley1030
@neilquigley1030 9 ай бұрын
Good thought, Ed. But, unless there was reason not to trust the backstay, the halyard run aft wasn't helping - and would have torn out that little cleat if any significant forward masthead pull occurred. The Bro's said they were trying to stop pumping - the only way to do that is with a running backstay attached about 2/3 - 3/4 of the way up the mast. A reefed, centered main, and very tight mainsheet, can offer that protection - essentially the leech of the mainsail and the mainsheet serve as a discontinuous running backstay.

Never even thought about that but definitely worth a go thanks for the advice 😃👍

One of your best videos. Loved the poem, brilliant! Rain on waves is interesting. Once I had rain so heavy that it looked like we were sailing over snow dunes, all the sea was white. For me, the worst thing about heavy weather was the wind screaming in the rigging, it might be very uncomfortable when the sea is chucking the boat about but the wind noise is terrible. Looking forward to the next one.

Lovely to watch - a good challenge well met. We got seriously smacked in that area too. Once on the way to Suwarrow, and then again from there to Samoa. The second storm was 3 days long, with evening peaks of 55kts and monster waves. Nothing like that forecast. We lost the transom steps to a wave and ripped both sails. I was getting very tired by the end from helming as the wind vane or autopilot couldn't cope well with the cross seas and we span out a couple of times. Fun times!

I am just starting into this video and probably should make my comment(s) afterwards but here goes: I was very surprised to see you put that second head'sle up, for down wind sailing the way you did so. Personally I would never unban the whole sail back at the mast. No worries dead down wind in moderate air, but others wise asking to have a sail turn into a 'ball gown' turned sea anchor. Suggestion: when you bag the sail, do it with all the hanks still on the fore stay, bag it up and leave the clew readily accessible to the bag opening, then take all the hanks off and stow her below. The next time setting the sail all the hanks will be stacked in or close to in order. You can hank her up and attach the halyard and sheets before the sail ever comes out of the bag. This is a great way to prep a sail ahead of time in a slowly dying breeze. You can take your time prepping and if you don't set for an hr or two, the sail is not going to go any where or threaten to cause an inadvertent issue. Same for dousing in a freshening breeze where you may want to set it again in a few hrs because the wind died or you bore off etc.... ;)

Wow that was pretty intense again and it looks like Adam caught a cold while steering in the rain :o Hope you were fine in the coming days, you both looked pretty depleated and in need of rest. As always Atlas made sure the crew stayed unharmed :) yay!

It did get pretty sketchy and I have been suffering with my nose recently seems very bummed up all the time. We were a little deflated losing our antenna and AIS 😭

That double headsail set-up works a treat doesn't it? I use the same on my Atlantic crossing but I don't have an inner forestay so I rigged the #2 genoa on the second (port side) track of the furler foil with its own halyard. No worry about an accidental gybe!

How did that work out for you have in the twin head sails on the stay ?

Wow guys, what an amazing passage and video. A few of your videos have had me holding my breath and this one was no exception. But your seamanship and decision making is spot on. Looking forward to the next instalment. Stay safe.

Lads - I really enjoy how you explain your sail plan tactics, There seems to be a lot of KZbin channels on cruising that don't teach me a thing. Well done on heaving-to, the only proven strategy to protect life and vessel in the very worst of conditions.

It really is an absolute pleasure Robert. We like to think everyone is on board with us. Heaving to can save your boat and your life ✌️

My sailing buddy always discouraged me from sailing with twin headsails, on the basis that the rig was not designed for such a load. That probably depends on the boat, but a good idea to at least run a halyard aft, to resist some of that load.

It's good practice just in case. You are right about the rig not being designed for it 👍

I never, ever listen to poetry! . . . . . OK, so I'm a moron, but poetry to me has always been just irrelevant nonsense . . . . . However your opening words were really great, I honestly enjoyed them, for the first time ever. (and after 72 years that's quite an achievement by you!).
