I WILL chime in, as an entomologist, having wings is a basal trait for ALL insects (just some insects have lost the ability to have wings). Insects are largely split into two groups of incomplete metamorphosis (babies look like mini adults; crickets, mantises, cockroaches, dragonflies, termites, etc) and complete metamorphosis (babies are larvae; wasps, bees, ants, butterflies, moths, flies, mosquitoes, beetles, etc) Also not to further be the bug nerd, but flies are absolutely important as decomposers that break down organic material (which is why they're around trash, rotting food, dead bodies, and poop)
@swayback73756 ай бұрын
“Not to further be the big nerd” A) you are doing that B) you dam well know it C) you should go even harder and be proud of it! I love these goobers but people don’t know, they don’t want to know… no one does, and that’s why we are really cooked! So disconnected from the rest of the world and often proud of it. I do wish it was different but at this point it’s willful ignorance
@Marcuchi20006 ай бұрын
what about mosquitoes? do they contribute in a meaningful way?
@attabooii6 ай бұрын
@@Marcuchi2000 Yeah they definitely do! There are 3,600 species of mosquitoes and only 88 carry diseases. And even so, only gravid (pregnant) females feed on blood. Males and females actually drink nectar most of the time! And are incredibly important pollinators. They're also an essential food source for fish and birds in a riparian (wetland/river) ecosystem. Trust me, I hate em a lot too, and many of them are massively invasive. But they are incredibly important in a lot of aspects

I just recently learned that there are “true” bugs called _Hemiptera_ which are things like cicadas (which is what I was looking up) but explicitly excludes things such as ants, bees, beetles, or butterflies. What we in English typically call “bugs” are really just all terrestrial arthropods - which even includes non-insects like _arachnids_ (e.g., spiders, ticks, scorpions) and _myriapods_ (e.g., millipedes, centipedes).

57:38 this moment where Jarvis sees Ted’s face and properly takes the time to address this is a beautiful thing and high EQ moment. The podcast would benefit from this being recognized and reciprocated when QT or Austin are so visibly in this position so often. The dynamic in regular cast appearances is seeming more and more stressed lately, so let’s praise Jarvis and Ted for this moment here.

As a guy who’s unhealthily obsessed with historical linguistics, the guys were correct about the origin of the n-word. It comes from the word for black in the Romance languages. And that Old Norse word that “niggard” is borrowed from is “hnøggr”, which not only looks cursed to an English speaker’s eye but also has sounds that are alien for most people. First of all, the “ø” sound is pronounced like the vowel in “bed” (that “eh” vowel) but with your lips rounded like in “oo” or “oh”. Try to pronounce “eh” with your lips rounded, that will be close enough to “ø”. The initial “hn” is weird. It could’ve been pronounced as a plain old sequence of sounds of “h” as in “house” and “n” as in “nose”. Or it could’ve been this voiceless “n”, which is kinda hard to comprehend for an English speaker but the sound exists in a descendant language of Old Norse, Icelandic (the regular “n” is voiced, i.e. pronounced with your vocal cords vibrating at the same time, and voiceless “n” is pronounced without voicing at the same time, it’s like the difference between “s” which is voiceless and “z” which voiced) Since this is an old language, we don’t know how it was spoken exactly, though linguists have a pretty good idea about it when it comes to well-attested languages like Old Norse. And finally that “r” at the end. It’s not a regular old trilled or tapped “r”, like in Spanish. This word/root-ending “r” of Old Norse is theorized to have been pronounced as something in between “r” and “z”, like you’re trying to pronounce both at the same time. Yeah, this was a bit too long but I did not expect Fear& to talk etymologies and linguistics so I got excited.
@FangsFirst6 ай бұрын
Whew. Glad someone covered all of this. Had nothing on the Old Norse, but the n-word etymology is one of the more straightforward ones (which is presumably why Will put it together as a hypothesis without having any deep-seated interest in etymology or anything)
@kkuwura6 ай бұрын
@@FangsFirst exactly, also it helps that there’s a doublet for the n-word that English borrowed from Spanish (the word for “black”) without changing it much just with a regular anglicization of the pronunciation
