The giant can still catch you with the crystals, the push bars are for when you run out, before the first patch the giant was able to destroy the doors and grab you but I haven’t seen the giant be a real threat unless standing near him

You can. We just all prefer the torch as it’s so much better for light. The flame icon also acts as a gauge for how much fuel the lamp still has.
