In this episode, Michelle and Alex explore Schiedam, the genever (or jenever) capital of the Netherlands (actually, probably the world). We also eat at a sandwich shop that's named after us and try the viral "Dubai chocolate" with künefe from De Bonte Koe (a Schiedam-based chocolatier).

Yo! I'm born in Dordrecht Moved from there when I was a year and a half. Moved to Haarlem. Lived in Calgary Canada for 7 years. Lived in Leiden, Amsterdam., London. But guys I've been back to Dordrecht a few times as a part of my family lives there.. Not my cup of thea anymore I recently moved to Zandvoort so i could stay close to Haarlem. Man. The most beautifull city in the Netherlands. Seeing you two enjoy trainrides. Take one Haarlem and then rent a bike and take a ride through the dunes. Glad to welcome you in Zandvoort for a home made cup of Coffee. Cheers Eugène

No, those are real turtles! Not sure as to why exactly, but they've been living in that canal for years. Secondly, I've learned more about my hometown watching this than by living here for 36 years. Anyway, pretty sure this was the Sunday I was debating myself on whether or not to leave my house and go downtown and ultimately decided not to, so now I'm bummed I deprived myself from the opportunity to run into you guys 😂 hope you had fun!

The turtles are real. They are not originally found in the Netherlands, but were released by people who had them as pets and no longer wanted them. Turtles can survive in the Netherlands. Sometimes they also lay eggs that they bury in the sand, but summers are too short and too cool for the eggs to hatch.

Ketel One is the brand, they make Vodka but also Jenever. The original Ketel 1 distilling ketel is still there and is still used, it's still heated with a cole fire. I actually did a tour at the distillery behind the windmill and have a photo of myself shoveling cole into Ketel 1.

The Liquor you had was "oude jenever" It has not realy aged like whisky, the color comes from spices.

There is a poolcafe in Schiedam called De Ketel and it is in an old Distillery and the pipes and ketel are still inside…

If you take a tour at Hooghoudt in Groningen they used to give you two jenever mix-drinks. Tasted quit good.

Interesting. Never seen a tourist video from Schiedam. I grew up and went to school there late 90s/early 2000s (the school being literally behind that church which rang its bells). The city really lost its 'flavor' over the years. Coming into the city center really ain't what it used be. On the other hand, it does have some nice sight seeing spots.

Sure is! Although the ‘black’ part can be easily explained (the city used to be covered in soot, from all distilleries), the Nazareth-part doesn’t have an unambiguous explanation. Some refer to Bible-verses, others to the Belgian city of Nazareth. Quite interesting actually 😊

My hometown, only thing positive is that we have the tallest historical windmills in the world. Edit; The ''Castle'' is from 1107, the year that is. Edit nr 2; the turtles are real, just throw a rock in the water. Jesus Christ, another one; Ketel 1 is jenever NOT wodka.

@@buncharted2 Yep, it is jenever. Ketel one only sells wodka in the USA. You are currently not in the USA. So they only sell jenever in the Netherlands. It is in the wikipedia article, just read carefully.

@@buncharted2 I'm getting old, for ages Ketel 1, meant Jenever/Gin. But i just found out they've started to use THAT name for more than just Jenever. Which i find weird, since the brand is Nolet, just like we have 'de Kuyper' . Why use a certain product name, for different products ?
