All these boys were friggin badasses. Been 50 years now since this was released. RIP boys - all original band members dead. The slide guitarist at the beginning of the song died a few months ago. Glad we got their masterpiece to remember them by.

I saw them live in 1977 at Tulsa fairgrounds at the Willie Nelson picnic with Willie, Waylon Jennings and Jessi colter, Leon Russell, asleep at the wheel, Jerry Jeff walker, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. I was 15 years old at the time. Great memories. God bless

Wow. Awesome line up. We’re the same age if you were 15 in ‘77. I saw a lot of bands at “Mountain Aire” yearly concerts (craft faire, frog jump, plane show) Venue in Angles Camp, Calif. We did craft faires selling Tye Dye T-shirt in Texas & California. Love Waylon, Willie and the Boys (Jerry Jeff:)

That's Allen Collin's shreddin on the solo, he wrote that riff at 16. Skynyrd named their band after one of the band members high school gym coach whose named was Leonard Skinner. They are Southern Rock Royalty.

Aww Damn. This was my favorite reaction to this. 😂😂 The drummers arms had to be jello after this. God bless yall. This is a really hard hitting song too.
@jamesmontgomery9523 Жыл бұрын
Great Reaction. The first part is the slow slide guitar and melancholy mood over a needed breakup, when the second part hits that is the Freebird taking off and flying wherever it wants to go. Though the second part is the bomb, the first part is the fuse - can't have one without the other in this epic song. Most reactors follow up with Simple Man which is a great jam also. Of course, it is hard to go wrong with any Skynryd tune.

In places, the high-pitched guitar mimics a bird flying free. This is something Duane Allman did on the 1970 Derek & the Dominos track "Layla," where at the end he plays the "crying bird." In that song, it signifies Layla's untamed spirit. In "Free Bird," the guy is the elusive one, refusing to be caged by intimacy.

So in the beginning it’s Gary Rossington on slide. The main lead at the end is Allen Collins, who by the way wrote most of the rhythm and lead to this song when he was 17! If you listen close you can hear double Leads at the end. That is both guitarists.

Your dancing was good..it was actually like being a "Freebird". Now, about Lynyrd Skynyrd. I am sooo glad that I got to see the original band in ATL at the Tech Coliseum 74/75. Being there demonstrated to me that no one can sing their songs like Ronnie Van Sant. He pours his spirit into each & every song. His little brother (Donnie) replaced him and he tries, but I haven't heard the Spirit in his vocals so I only listen to the original band. Also, (you probably know this by now), there are actually 3 guitars tearing it up during the second half of this song. They put that guitar symphony in there so that Ronnie could grab 20-30 minutes to rest his voice. There are so many songs that they did that were exceptional. Maybe try: "Simple Man" (it's slow, but epic), "Tuesdays Gone". Dammit, there is no way I can list all of their best songs. I hope you listen & enjoy much more of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Said to be the 1st or second best song of all time….the other one being “ Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. In whatever you want them in. The group was named after their high school P.E. teacher with a military haircut who said they were losers and would never go anywhere…his name was Leonard Skinner.

Leonard Skinner, the PE teacher whose name was immortalised in rock'n'roll history by his students, has died in Florida, aged 77. The teacher's distaste for the long hair of pupils at Robert E Lee high school in Jacksonville in the 1960s led to many a shaggy-fringed student being sent to the headteacher's office - among them the founding members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band adopted, then adapted, the sports tutor's name - its spelling purported to be a homage to the vagaries of southern American pronunciation - before achieving worldwide fame with rock anthems such as Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird. The group later befriended their former nemesis.
