A nice easter egg in this battle is that during the last back-and-forth when it goes black and white. @@salazarslytherin8580 Japan beat Russia 40 years before the bombs were dropped. But shortly before WW2 Russia beat Japan so bad over a border dispure near Manchuria that Japan was so afraid of provoking Russia they wouldn’t shoot down Allied ships carrying supplies to Russia through their own seas. Russia was a much more industrialized country than they were before WW1 and even more so by the end of WW2. They would have annihilated Japan in any 1v1 war and the fact that the Soviets entered the war against them opening another front and destroying half their remaining ground army and their most elite battalions so quickly was a big factor in helping end the war even quicker. And it did push the US to dropping the bombs when they did knowing they had an agreement in place with Russia to enter the war 3 months after Germany’s surrender. But the US didn’t want Russia getting into Japan like they did with Germany and half of Europe so they dropped the bombs trying to get Japan to the negotiating table even quicker while showing off the US’ capabilities to the Soviets with the power of the bomb

The atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki sparked a worldwide controversy when the bombs were dropped on August 6, 1945 and August 9, 1945, respectively. To this day, these bombings are still very controversial in the world, with arguments both for and against the use of these bombs being made very commonly. Although, based on the facts of the situation, the bombing was an easily justifiable step to ending the war with Japan. With possible alternatives being obsolete in comparison, this action by the United States government was a very crucial moment in this war for the United States. One large argument which strongly justified the acts of the U.S. government in dropping these two bombs is the fact that it may have saved countless American lives. As it is stated in the provided text, "The Japanese saw suicide as an honorable alternative to surrender." (Argument #1 For). This means that the Japanese soldiers would've kept fighting and killing Americans, even at the cost of their own lives. Another argument which justifies these bombings was that the Japanese were given fair warning. A statement in the text claims, "Japanese civilians were warned in advance through millions of leaflets dropped on Japanese cities by U.S. warplanes." (Argument #5 For). This shows that although the Japanese citizens and government were warned of these bombings beforehand, they still chose not to surrender. This choice was the decision of the Japanese government, and should be treated as such. Although there are some alternatives to the bombings that are listed in the text, none of them would've worked out nearly as well for either side than the bombings did. The listed alternatives included: "A demonstration of the bomb... Wait for the Russians... Continue conventional bombing..." (Argument #4 Against). A demonstration of the bomb could've likely ended very negatively. This is because it would have to be arranged through a back channel, such as through America's ally, the Russians. The problem with this option is the fact that with Joseph Stalin in charge in Russia, there's a decent chance that they would've misused the bomb. This would also waste American resources in building the extra bomb for demonstration. Also, they likely would not have surrendered after the demonstration, due to the fact that they did not even surrender after the bombing of Hiroshima. Why waiting for the Russians would've been a worse idea than the bombings is because it would have resulted in the casualties and fatalities of allied Russian soldiers, as well as American soldiers because of the increase in the length of the war and the increase in battles that would've been fought. Continuing the conventional bombings would've been even worse than dropping the atomic bombs, because as a Japanese professor who served in the war stated, "If the military had its way, we would have fought until all 80 million Japanese were dead. Only the atomic bomb saved me." (Argument #2 For). This shows that the dropping of the atomic bombs actually saved the lives of Japanese soldiers, rather than causing excess amounts of death. Although the bombings were very brutal, they were completely necessary to end the war with Japan. On August 15, 1945- just six days after the bombing of Nagasaki- the Japanese unconditionally surrendered to the Americans, effectively ending the war. Not only did these bombings save the lives of allied soldiers, they also saved the lives of many Japanese soldiers. At the end of it all, the war did end due to these bombings. A war which could've lingered for years longer. As ironic as it may be, these bombings protected the lives of many, and were completely justified.

Fun fact about the Boy Scouts, they were actually a thing in Britian 2 years before they were established in the U.S. The story (as I had been told when I was a scout) was that Robert Baden-Powell was lost in Britian, and a scout had helped him find his way without accepting a reward, even though he was offered one. to be clear, Japan wasn't going to surrender, just with draw from the mainland. Estimates at the time were 80 million deaths to invade Japan, mostly Japanese civilian casualties.
@matthewsantos655

To be truly clear, the Japanese were going to surrender. Japan was extremely afraid of the USSR invading the Japanese mainland and didn't want communism and were going to surrender to the US regardless of the bombs. It was definitely going to cost lives, but 80 million is a stretch given that the whole Japanese population was only 71 million in 1945...

@@matthewsantos655 Sorry, meant 8 million not 80, but still, that's a lot of life loss. I had forgotten about revisionist thoughts on a potential Russian invasion of the Japanese mainland. My favourite bit of trivia about this one: when Churchill did the Rushmore line, and we see the Rushmore monument transform into the presidents as a band, the 3 presidents who aren't Roosevelt had already been portrayed by Nice Peter in previous battles... BUT they didn't use footage from those battles to put together the band, instead they chose to dress up three copies of an image of Dante as the presidents. (Dante is one of the more important secondary members of the ERB crew, he played Nicola Tesla in Tesla vs Edison, and he came up with the "naan violence" line in Gandhi vs MLK Jr)

British person here. So the line "go hide in your tube" is a reference to the Blitz, when Britain was bombed for years during WWII. And during these air raids, in London, the Tube (Underground, British Metro) was used as public bomb shelters. Also, the line where Churchil did the "And you'll still be roasted" is a direct reference to a joke that he told at a dinner party where a woman said "Sir, you are drunk" and he replied "And you are ugly. But tomorrow, I'll be sober, and you'll still be ugly" You did get the jist of them, but just some clarifications on what they actually are. Love your stuff man, keep it up!

The two fingers up was of saying "Jog on" is actually a really interesting story. As Brits know from school, the last time the UK was successfully invaded was in 1066, by William the Conqueror, so every monarch's family tree can be traced back to him if you go far enough. However, it wasn't the last time someone attempted. In the late 1100s, another Frenchman tried to invade with crossbows, declaring that he'd cut the index and middle fingers off every Bowman in England so they couldn't use a Longbow. However, when the frenchman's army was defeated, those two fingers being stuck up was used as a way to say "fuck you" to him instead - as the presence of these two fingers was proof that he hadn't been able to carry out his plan.

That "TR will give WC the full deuce!" Was a serious combo. Gave him the British equivalent of the finger, told him he'd wreck him with shit talking, (minor add-on) 2 can also be "deuce", and the one that pulls it all together is that WC not only stands for Winston Churchill, but before we called them bathrooms, they were called "Water Closets", so he literally called Churchill a toilet and threatened to fill him with crap.

12:01 This is a reference to The Blitz. In WW2 the germans routinely bombed the hell out of London. The Tube is slang for the London Subway. During the Blitz thousands of people would retreat into the subway tunnels to escape the bombing. It's second meaning is that Roosevelt is dropping verbal "bombs" so Churchill should just run away and hide like he did during the Blitz.

Fun Fact: The Churchill Quote at 11:05 is actually a subtle reference to a an anecdote about him, in addition to the things you said. The story is about a conversation between Churchill and politician Bessie Braddock, that went something like this: Braddock: Sir, you are drunk. Churchill: And you, Bessie, are ugly. But I shall be sober in the morning, and you will still be ugly.
