Very odd that a priest and a nun get to comment on the book before the authors. It’s almost as if they are telling the Irish people how to view the book. It’s almost as if Gay Byrne, RTÉ and the Catholic Church have come together to tell the audience not to read this book. Ireland used to be very narrow minded and in these times was controlled by the Catholic Church. How times have changed now that people are more educated and that the Catholic Church itself been found guilty of protecting and covering up so many scandals, deplorable behavior and abuses of power.

Circa the earlier 60's. A Former NUN was hired by my very small public country school in Arizona US. She was one of the best teachers I ever had and left way too soon. It wasn't till I was much older that I was able to put some old memories together and realize she was "Lesbian".

@@ellenruane2654 I think I get that. Apparently during the Nazi reign, Gay men were persecuted (forced to wear the Pink Triangle etc) but lesbians were largely ignored. Not that they totally escaped persecution, but they didn't seem to suffer as much.

Thousands of people would threaten to turn off the TV completely because they would not entertain this ‘filth’! But when invited to turn off the Late Late Show by the host, nobody turned off! No one was going to miss the ‘filth’ if they could help it!!! That was mid 1980s Ireland! I remember it well. 🙄😃😃

Fr Raphael Gallagher was a very fine lecturer and gay-friendly way back then. He was no doubt chosen to appear because of that. Homosexuality and feminism do still present moral challenges today, just as heterosexuality and rampant Harvey Weinstein masculinity present moral challenges.

It was more than the Catholic Church in fairness. When you think about it lots of countries had this attitude and the Catholic Church barely had a hold on them. I think in many cases People just hated the idea of homosexuality at all, and not for religious reasons.

Yes and no , for a start the Irish Had there own blend of Catholicism that for some reason to seems even more opressed than lets say in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Belgum, Italy, Spain or Mexico Roman Catholics in those countries know how to let there hair down and guilt is less empesised Like Carla in Brides head revisited said "We do what the hart tells us and then we go to confession " that i think is the attitude of continental European and Latin Roman Catholicism but in the UK, USA and Canada Catholicism for some reason took a very harsh and Highly Orthodox and guilty flavor to it .I think it is cultural and the fact so many of the Irish were up until recently in history HIGHLY UNEDUCATED . I also agree with other posters tha people simply did not know what Same sex love was . if they did they only understood it from the Victorian standpoint that its a phycological illness and a form of sexual deviancy and ant social behavior. Viewpoints such as that remained very prevalent even into the 80's and early 90's
