Oh and just for reference when Nathan drives the General. It has turf mode so he was in 1 wheel drive on the course. He stated it had 2x4, 2 wheel drive lock, & 4x4. In the dips you started in turf. It’s a feature I thought I’d hate but now that I can make 3 pin turns like a go kart I love it

The comparisons were great. It seems as though the sport utility market has grown a lot. I started looking at X3, then Talon and stumbled on the General and I'm glad I did. I was about to mention the same thing when Nathan was driving. If he would have had it in 2-wheel drive it would have gone up the trenches with ease. This test comparison is all about play capability and not work capability. With that in mind the General wins, and it's obvious, because $45k is insane for that RZR (General and Mule are $20k out the door). BUT the Mule handles this course just fine, but a bit bumpier. If the test comparison was all about work capability, the Mule wins. That's expected, because Kawasaki was making the Mule as a working machine long before any of the others even got into the SxS game. The play aspect has completely changed the SxS market, and Kawasaki has adapted very well.

One thing about the Kawasaki mule it will be around still doing work how long after those other two have already been melted down into a Honda hubcap. I have a 1998 Kawasaki mule it has over 4000 hours on it still on the original engine and drivetrain, and probably the most dependable thing i own. It is out lasted probably five or six Polaris rangers not to mention this junkie Can-Am I have right now. Don’t give me wrong that Ken M is pretty nice and that Rotax engine is bulletproof but they sure need to work on their drive line. Axles and clutches don’t last long in a Can-Am. Actually in the Kawasaki dealership in Bryan Texas there’s a sign on the wall that says the only two things it’s going to be left on this earth in another 500 years is roaches and Kawasaki mules 🤣

They are all ripping you off on prices though. Have you see the Kawasaki broken down into pieces? You didn't mention that there are 2 more RZR models between the General and the RZR Pro R. The XP and the Pro are considerably cheaper and a tad bit smaller. Bit they would still eat that course up without a sweat. There could be some interesting comparisons in the wide range of brands and models of any of the several classes of SxS's. Low low low. Never use high range for slow driving. You will burn the belt quick. The mule is a different story. It’s has a lower top speed and I believe lower gearing, the mule and John Deere gators have the same drivetrain and you can get away with using high gear around the yard and stuff. That general has a top speed around 80mph. If you’re not hauling ass on the trails or down the road, use low.

For average joes likes me, it makes sense to buy a base 4x4 mid size truck and just get a side by side to have fun. I mean, getting a raptor, trx, trd pro to have fun, well you risk the following: 1. Ruin it by trail damage. That would cost you and leave you stranded, especially with family. 2. It would be a lot more harder to afford both, the side by side and vehicle. If you got money than my comment does not apply. Thats why i can only afford a $40k 4x4 vehicle (mid size truck, suv) and that leaves me like $20k max to afford a side by side. Option two would be to get like a trail boss or trd pro, but thats it and i defenetly would be mad if i damage it and for daily commuting would not be as fun.

Can someone please explain to me how low range works on a side-by-side with a CVT? How can there be low range gearing when there are no gears in a CVT?
@nismomike31822 жыл бұрын
A sxs CVT relies on the gears in the transaxle to shift. Park, reverse, high, low, and neutral. The CVT primary is mounted to the engine crankshaft. The CVT secondary mounts to the transaxle input shaft. The CVT belt connects them. You cannot shift on the fly. It works just how it sounds though. It changes the final drive ratio. Full throttle in high will top out at about 100 mph in an X3. In low gear it will top out at 50 or so. It makes slow speed crawling much easier and creates less belt stress. Exact same concept as any 2 speed transfer case.
@MrDeleoco2 жыл бұрын
The CVT is considered a variable speed transmission from engine input to output to gearbox. The CVT runs a gearbox. When you're in H, the gears will move the vehicle faster as the CVT engages it's variable clutching in engine acceleration and vehicle speed. When you put the gearbox in L, you are choosing a lower speed gearing and the CVT performs the same function as before with more engine acceleration and power and less CVT stress and slip. If you are in H ⚙️, and come upon a hill or obstacle you will most likely stress the clutch belt because it will have a higher resistance in turning the gears. When you have the gearbox in L ⚙️, the CVT is less stressed and the belt will slip less preventing belt burn because it is engaging the primary and secondary clutches and overcoming most resistance the wheels may encounter in climbing or bogging. Bottom line there is a gearbox that makes the wheels turn faster or slower per ENGINE/CVT RPM; the CVT is a mechanism to engage the engine to the TWO speed (High/Low) gearbox. ↙️
