in open diff rigs you should take a slower approach. left foot brake about 30-50% and easy on the gas, you'll trick the diff into transferring power to the other wheel. probably walk right up that.

Justin King E-brake might be better than using the main brakes as it only impacts the rear axle. Engage it as you say, 30-50%, or until you can see both rear tires turning. If your front axle specifically needs to 'lock', then use left-foot braking. Edited to say: Love your channel, btw. Looks like good times! Stay safe!

I got to 5:41 on the video, and I stopped to post this. I thought that as a possibility but then again the rollers are pretty close together for that tire size. I think the tire is just able to overcome the tight spacing of the rollers.

Pull the rear diff cover and check for a limited slip. Just because it didn't come from the factory with one doesn't mean someone didn't have one put in later. Especially considering it's age. If you find one throw in a new clutch pack and enjoy. Remember, a limited slip will act a lot an open diff when tires are in the air. Be careful not to just burn the clutches out again expecting to much from it.

I have been conflicted with this “Cheap” Jeep challenge. I was surprised you guys went with a 4-Cylinder/Auto and that turned me on to this. But you got the $900 Teraflex suspension and $800 worth of BFG KO2 tires, but don’t want to spend the money on a $250 Locker, I’m sitting here scratching my head.
@406Steven6 жыл бұрын
Those are from sponsors, if they paid anything for them it was a highly discounted price (I believe the BFGs were totally free, if you go back to the build video).
@SBF966 жыл бұрын
UnsulliedSpy They weren’t entirely clear about that, I just remember them rambling off prices. If that’s the case, then there should be some money to get a locker like Tommy suggested. My issue is that this is only a “Cheap” Jeep build because they bought it cheap. They said early on this was going to show you that you could build a cheap off-roading rig. This is not that. I get that they are sponsors, but if someone truly is wanting to cheap out, this is not the cheap route. I wish they were a little more hands on. They dumped over $700 to have the suspension put on, brakes replaced, tires mounted, and the alignment. I could have done the first two things in my driveway during the weekend and saved a few hundred dollars. I don’t mean to be so critical, but this is not the route I thought they were going.
@406Steven6 жыл бұрын
@@SBF96 That's fair, and the interpretation of "cheap" is pretty vague--it would be more relatable if they did something like set a budget and try to buy and build the best rig they could for the given budget as that would remove the interpretation of "cheap" from the equation. I think they should invest in a limited slip or locker as well, but those are also pretty involved to install correctly so they'd be stuck paying a shop to set it up properly (re-shimming the ring & pinion, setting backlash, etc.).

UnsulliedSpy I agree with that thought.

Ditch the swaybars and let's the solid axles flex. This also helps if you have open diff's. And lower the wheel speed if you have a rear lsd so you dont cook the clutches. All of this works for my XJ.

Handbrake is for torsen differential vehicles. Basically it was taught to military members to help the hmmwv get unstuck, then it filtered down. Unless your handbrake is stronger on one wheel and that happens to be the spinning wheel, then it won’t do shit for you with an open differential. With a torsen it’ll double to triple the torque the brake applies to the wheel with better traction.

Overall, another well-edited video from TFL. I enjoyed Carsten's build story. That young man has done a great job in researching and sorting most of the bling out of his add-ons, light bar and CAI notwithstanding. I do have a few comments: -He replaced his OPDA, not "OBDA." Anyone with an '05-'06 4L TJ should, as Carsten did, inspect their cam and pump driver gears. Replacement OPDAs run $100. -The K&N intake offers no advantage over the stock configuration. The original does not restrict airflow, filters better and, as stated, has a higher intake. -Taillight guards both decrease visibility and increase the likelihood of their snagging on brush and other trailside obstacles. Similarly, the Hi-Lift jack mount begs to bang, snag, and catch. The TJ's reduced width is an advantage in most cases. Why widen it? -The Mercedes-sourced six-speed NSG370 was only offered the last two years of the TJ run, not '03-'06 as stated, and is not nearly as robust as the TFL crew touts. Most TJ gear rowers will affirm the earlier, and stronger, Aisin AX-15 as superior, both in terms of strength and parts availability. -The sliders appear to be Rubicon take-offs, so they easily would bolt into the existing holes. Though not particularly beefy, they do offer a modicum of protection.

I vote for a more aggressive tire like BFG Mud Terrains or Goodyear Wrangler MT/R. All terrain tires are for sport utility wagons, not a Jeep. Also throw in a selectable locker in the rear and sway bar quick disconnects up front and you should be good to go. You're almost there, just a little more money.....
@406Steven6 жыл бұрын
There's already a lot of people complaining about the money they've spent on it (especially since they won't spend the money on lockers) so perhaps they could go hit up Craigslist for some used offroad tires or check out some local offroad shops to see if they have any worn but still OK tires in their scrap pile. That's what my buddies and I always did when we were wheeling.

I would love to see what happens if you apply a little break pressure when slipping. Trick the diffs into having equal traction, thereby sending equal power to the wheels?
@chasrmartel47776 жыл бұрын
If you're staying stock axles then TrueTracs front and rear are the way to go. No maintenance, much easier on the front Dana 30 and really strong off-road performance and they last the life of the vehicle. They are also not much more than a lunch box locker without the popping around corners. Trust me I've been down this path starting with a CJ-5 in the 70s and including a 97' TJ along the way. I went Lock Rite with the TJ because I hadn't had experience with the TrueTracs at that point.
@406Steven6 жыл бұрын
A lunchbox locker is good for a cheap build but yeah, it'll twist the splines off of those stock axles pretty easily. TrueTracs are awesome, but $600+ just for the differential is outside the reach of a budget build.
@chasrmartel47776 жыл бұрын
@@406Steven That depends on how budget you are trying to be. I contend $1500 or less for traction control is not excessive. Also, I would invest in the traction before a lift and after skid plates.
@406Steven6 жыл бұрын
@@chasrmartel4777 I'd agree that they could've kept the suspension stock or put spring spacers in (under $100) and been fine for a budget suspension, then they would've had plenty of budget left over for a differential. I really think this build went more the way of who they could get free parts from, though. If I had to venture a guess I'd say that they want to keep it as a personal rig and these are mods they wanted for themselves rather than keeping with the spirit of the build but that's all assumption. I've had my eye on a TrueTrac for my own truck but have a hard time spending that kind of money on one when I have never experienced one before, the factory diff in my F-250 with a new set of clutches is pretty solid and a fraction of the cost.

That is a really nice TJ (Carsten's) and seems to have all the right equipment. Having gone through a similar first build with my 02 TJ Sport, I think the one thing I would do different is to have an overall 'build plan' and stick to it. Decide from the start what your goals/build is to be and stick to it. I ended up doing "two builds" on mine. Meaning I first installed a short arm lift, tires/wheels, ARB lockers and gears. Only to change things around a year later to a long arm suspension, gears again!, added Dana 44 up front (to match the factory rear Dana 44), new wheels and tires again!, and finally realized I have gone far enough. If I go any further, I won't be able to drive to distant trails and events since I would have to trailer it. And I don't want that. I love my TJ with its 5 speed NV3550 tranny, and long arms. But I could have saved a lot of money having done the long arm build to begin with. I also like the idea of the Cheap Jeep. Almost makes me want to go out and buy one to build again! lol

Great episode. Great questions at the end too

Carsten's got all the info. We need more Jeep tech videos with him 'splainin' the differences between model years and so forth.

you should try the rollers while on a slight hill and see if you can get off of them. Its a better replica of your off road scenario

Awesome spec on Carsten’s Jeep. Can tell a lot of research was done. Would love to know what sliders are those? Most require drilling up to 15 holes like for the ARB. Thanks.

Let's see this test with an Aussie Locker in the front axle! $275 locker is definitely Cheap Jeep approved!! 👌

That would make steering unsafe on snowy roads. Not a good idea to have your front lock up while you are going around a corner.

@@icarlsw34 Pretty sure the front locker would be to help get your jeep unstuck, like what happened to them and then unlocking it.

@@icarlsw34 Lunchbox lockers only apply the locking action when torque is sent to them. For example in 4hi or 4low power is sent to the front and you will have a locking front differential and slightly stiffer steering feel. However in 2hi the front locker is completely disengaged and invisible on the street. That is the reason I run a selectable locker in the rear of my Jeep. For added traction on the cheap you cannot beat the Aussie - I just recommend them for the front axle only on a street Jeep.

@@tself77 Right, but the situations Carl is talking about are legit when driving on slick roads in 4wd. For this reason, I'd think twice about a front locker in a daily driver.

Aussie lockers are part time but machanicaly engaged with an adjustable cable rather than electric or air powered.

I love the cheap Jeep, but holy crap. That other guy’s Jeep is insane!

His name is Carsten buddy, not "other guy"...

I think some of your rollers are binding, which would explain the smoke in the one close up of the rollers, and would give the wheels traction, and would explain why the Jeep didn't get stuck.

Gorgeous work man. I've got a '97 with the 4cyl 2.5L. I'm curious if anyone knows what that 2.8L Cummins costs and what the swap involves. Also wanting to do a budget rear locker on the Dana 35.

What aftermarket fender flares are on the blue Jeep? I like the look and am thinking of doing similar on my 04 Rubi. Thanks!

Awesome! Be safe though guys that was a little sketchy, but I guess that's kinda the nature of the beast with 4x4 off roading, lol!
