Does an oxygen bar actually work? After training for a few days at altitude in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, I decided to try an Oxygen bar to see if it would help me feel better!

A healthy individual should have oxygen above 95%, as a nurse if it falls below that we start investigating what may be causing a lower oxygen level. Oxygen at 85% triggers a critical response unless there is a known lung disease that may be causing this.
@StephaniePrincess94
@StephaniePrincess94 6 жыл бұрын
I'm a nurse too and almost flipped out when she said 90-100....as if a healthy individual should be below 95....and "concerned at 85?" *eyeroll*...calls rapid response team.
@michaelamcintyre5895
@michaelamcintyre5895 6 жыл бұрын
Echo 9970 I had been under the impression that for a healthy individual with the mild hypoxaemia associated with high altitudes should still result in oxygen saturations being at 94% at the lowest, I will need to do more research myself into oxygen saturations at higher altitudes. She should indeed made it significantly more clear that she was referring to these values for at altitude, but an 85% oxygen saturation does require more than just "concern" at an altitude similar to where they have stated.
@StephaniePrincess94
@StephaniePrincess94 6 жыл бұрын
I literally rewinded it when I watched to make sure I heard what I heard. She speaks generally about oxygen levels. She acknowledges that the body physiologically adapts to acclimate to a higher altitude, but does not specify that above 90, or 90-94 is within a safe zone at a high altitude (There is not much objective research on oximetry levels at high altitudes either). It may have also been the editing of the video that cut her explanation (super plausible). However, one thing is for sure, if you're satting 85% in a hospital, even if located in a high altitude, no one is going to be just "concerned" unless its a person with pulmonary/cardiac issues....We literally flip out if you have COPD and can't hit at least 88-89% with deep breaths, sitting upright, post neb treatment.

Revtune I mean, pseudoscience aside, having worked at the bedside myself for 18 years I can say it’s probably because it’s the easiest job she can have as an RN. I’m going to bet she’s been a nurse for a while-why wouldn’t she?
@MisaIsBored
@MisaIsBored 6 жыл бұрын
So firstly your oxygen level should not be between 90% and 100%. For a person with no respiratory disease we look for oxygen levels between 95% and 100%. Any less is low. When she says that if she see's someone with an oxygen level of 85% she would be "concerned" that would definitely warrant hospitalisation (at least here in the UK) Not only that but the results of this oxygen therapy will only last while you remain on the oxygen as as soon as you come off of it, your oxygen saturation will go back down to its baseline. Yes while people who are sick with illnesses such as COPD and chest infections benefit from oxygen treatment, a healthy person can become ill from too much oxygen which is known as hyperoxia and is where the oxygen is entering the body at a rate quicker than it can be released and causes it to build up in the tissues which can have negative consequences. It's a nice idea and in altitudes like this I can definitely see why it may have taken off but I think people should also be made aware of the risks.

@aladyfromtx1842

Erin Rosser there is a disorder called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and one of the major symptoms is a HR that spikes 30+ points while standing. There can be many causes for the disorder and it doesn't hurt to monitor HR upon standing (most of our fitness devices do it now). Most likely it is nothing, but what if it isn't? I would feel horrible to see something that could be cause for concern and keep silent. I spend my days as a patient liaison for POTS patients and unfortunately, it gets overlooked way too often. I truly hope her HR was just a case of altitude and nerves. Soft hugs.

My heart rate was like that when my asthma was out of control. It's gone down to averaging 80bpm from 120bpm... it really was scary. I was sent to the ER once because a doctor thought I might be having a heart attack, but it was determined to just be a symptom of my asthma. Getting oxygen would have definitely lowered my heart rate. So there's another thought. She should talk to a doctor though.

I have an oxygen concentrator at my house for medical purposes. It's great. It helps not only when I'm having breathing issues, but it also helps me when I get muscle spasms. Oxygen bars are pointless for most people. Healthy people don't need the extra oxygen. But yes, a high-altitude location like where you went is definitely a great place to have an oxygen bar for people to use. But there isn't a need for oxygen bars in most places. If there's someone who has a chronic medical condition where they benefit from extra oxygen, Most of them are gonna have their own oxygen with them. They're not gonna be stopping at some random oxygen bar. Also, the flavors are even more pointless. Oxygen doesn't need a "flavor". If you really need oxygen, you're not gonna care what it tastes or smells like. It's not like pure oxygen smells bad. It smells just like the air you breathe on a normal basis. You don't try to flavor the air you breathe every day, do you? I just find the idea of oxygen bars to be hilarious. I'm not mad about them or anything. A little extra oxygen isn't gonna hurt you. But I want people to know that they don't need to be wasting their money on something they probably don't need. I'm glad you could already see that oxygen bars are mostly gimmicky. I've been watching your videos for awhile and I've always gotten the sense that you're a pretty smart woman. And even though I don't like the idea of oxygen bars, I did enjoy this video. It was interesting to see the benefits of it for people in high-altitudes. P.S. I really hope Tina is okay. It's a good thing that nurse there knew what she was doing and knew that it's not normal to have such a high resting heart rate. Hopefully it was just the altitude and not anything chronic.
@CGT80
@CGT80 6 жыл бұрын
"You don't try to flavor the air you breathe every day, do you?" People do flavor it. People say that a major portion of taste is actually smell. It doesn't look any different than air freshener that is widely used, seems similar to people who vape with similar flavors/scents, and sounds similar to a hooka, but I have never done the last two. It certainly isn't necessary with the oxygen, but it adds to their advertising and appeal. As you said, the oxygen alone does little for most people. Did you pause and look at the prices on the menu board? Wow! Some of the supplements could be purchased and taken orally for far less money. Maybe some work better by iv or injection; I have heard of b12 shots, but it seems about as unnecessary as the oxygen. They should have tested their heart rate and oxygen 30 minutes after stopping the treatment, but it may have turned away customers.

I observe that during cardio. When many people are in the gym, there is a lot of carbondioxyd in the air, so the oxygen intake is harder to accomplish (balancing out the concentrations in the lungs), thus the heartrate is sometimes 10% higher than on normal days, when not so many people are there. The heart always tries to pumpt enough blood and make you get rid of CO2 while taking in O2, but in normal heights the O2 is not an issue.

Hi i'm a med student in france so sorry if this isn't the best english but I have a few things to say about this video. Oxygen level change a lot from person to person but anything over 92% doesn't need oxygen. If you see the dissociation curve between oxygen and hemoglobin (the oxygen carrier in the blood), there is a very small change of concentration of binded oxygen for people between 95% and 100% but if you go from 85% to 80% the gap is much bigger. Some people also musn't go above 92% (french HAS recommendations), the pathology is called chronic obstrictive pulmonary disease very common in smokers. There body has adapt in having a lower concentration of oxygen so if you give them to much oxygen they might slow their breathing (in the ICU if a patient have COPD, the oxygen level mustn't be to high). The heart rate of the cameraman and the sound guy were high but it might be because they were standing, carrying equipement, stressing a little bit because they were filming... A better protocol would have been to have them sit for a few minutes in order to calm down. In France, oxygen is a medical prescription and over oxygenation (for a long time) can have consequences like pulmonary fibrosis. Although a couple hours are nothing to worry about.

Apnea or sleep apnea can drop 02 levels. Sometimes into the low 80’s we usually give 02 when someone is steadily below 94. Meaning position change doesn’t help bring up the 02 saturation and it stays low. O2 for someone at 93 would get about 1-2 liters while someone in the 80’s might get 4-6 liters to bring them up to 96 and up.

Also, a fast heart rate can mean there's an infection somewhere within the body. That's how i knew I was sick before anything.. I had a "resting" bmp @ 125 I'm normally 84-88 resting..the following day I had an ear infection and excruciating body aches

In Australia anything below 94 is usually treated with oxygen prehospitally, this number is quoted differently in nearly every textbook. However, it has recently been found that oxygen administration can be quite detrimental and has been advised to be given as little as possible to healthy patients.

Red Viper its not technically pure oxygen. It's only a few litres per minute of oxygen and it's diluted by the room air that makes up the rest of your lung volume. It's probably only 25% inhaled.

For someone who is very fit and in shape like Michelle is, it's not uncommon to have a resting heart rate of 40's-50's. Naturally, any healthcare professional is going to have concern for a HR of 45 in an otherwise healthy person. But for Michelle, it's very possible her normal. It's something she can bring up with her doctor if it's concerning to her.

Her concern at a heart rate of 121 made me laugh. That was my resting for a long time and upon standing I'd go to 150 because I have PoTS. Even when sitting it'd sometimes get to 140 and I'd have to lay on the ground before I fainted.

Hannah Robin I thought this same exact thing😂 I was diagnosed in November 2017. It made me laugh how freaked out the nurse got but of course if you don't suspect someone has a medical problem then it's concerning but 121 isn't THAT bad and they were at an elevation she wasn't used to and she could've been dehydrated. Who knows😂

Hey so medically speaking your bloods oxygen saturation level will get higher obviously with the oxygen treatment. However not having a significant symptom change is normal when there is not a significant problem in the first place - your body is meant to adapt to different environmental O2 levels and the benefit will only be seen during the literal time of the treatment and then your levels will go right back to normal. Also a heart rate in the 120s can be normal while physically active, under stress or anxious. It is only a resting heart rate we expect to be less than 100. Also like very concerned about whether esential oils would be safe for direct inhalation into the lungs - very likely not to be safe.

100% correct. The main issue with those is the aroma they use, if they were only used for oxygen they would be quite useful for a lot of people.

I have massive respiratory issues for a 24yr old. Experienced many hospitalizations due to it. At one point my o2 level was at 87 if I remember correctly. This just reminded me of that. The video gave me kind of anxiety with those memories but I always wanted to try an oxygen bar recreationally.

I realise I'm 4yrs late on this and probably jumping to conclusions but on the off chance this is helpful I thought it was worth writing. Tina if you get lightheaded often when you stand up suddenly or find standing still for long periods of time difficult. It could be worth looking into whether you may have POTS. Its a form of dysautonomia characterised by a jump in heartrate from sitting to standing of 30 beats per min or more. So the fact that it was 120 when standing but dropped to 69 quickly after sitting down, is a very typical response from someone with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome)

BSN student in colorado here. For anyone freaking out over the nurse saying "90-100 is normal", in colorado d/t the lowered o2 levels, 90-100 is normal. 85 is still critical, but you do not need to push to 95 spO2 at 5k-6k feet. We are actively taught this in every RN program in CO. Also, this does nothing long term besides a quick dopamine rush and a placebo, unfortunately.

I love Oxygen bars! Makes me feel so alive! :) The recommendation of going to an oxygen bar to acclimate to higher elevations is not a good idea though. Going to an oxygen bar would just be regression and cause your body not to acclimate to the high elevation because you are getting supplemental oxygen rather than adapting. You would get temporary relief, but would feel the altitude sickness again quickly...best bet is to find lower elevation if you are having extreme elevation sickness such as vomiting or becoming unconscious.

I did an oxygen bar once. The first 20 minutes did NOTHING but they let us sit there way longer because it was Vegas and they wanted people to be at their station, so my friend and I stayed for almost an hour and DAMN. Yes, it makes a difference. But only if you stay for a long time.

I may be wrong but I would think if you are at a higher altitude from a lower altitude. The oxygen bar would be counter productive as now your body has more oxygen then less really fast and not good. Rather then helping

Also this nurse needs to be fact checked! Your oxygen levels in a healthy person should be above 90% all the time! I’m glad none of you guys where at 85% because that means you should be rushed to the hospital and she didn’t seem to think that stating at 85% is a problem! Very glad you guys are doing well and I love your videos!!

I'm pretty sure that going to an oxygen bar if you had altitude sickness would only help in the moment but WOULD not help in your overall adjustment to the elevation. People who live at a higher elevation have a higher erythrocyte count than those who live at a lower elevation. Erythrocytes are red blood cells. Red blood cells have hemoglobin which carries oxygen in the blood. Athletes with higher levels of erythrocytes preform better because their bodies hold onto oxygen better. If someone goes to an oxygen bar they are temporarily binding as many red blood cells as they can to oxygen. They are not increasing their red blood cell counts. Which is why after they return to normal oxygen levels for that elevation they will return to their former symptoms. It would be better for someone to naturally allow their body to increase it's red blood cell count. Without this elevation sickness will not go away on its own.

just breathing will cause a pulse oximeter to go up also. i have one and i can literally got from 95 when im relaxing then breathe heavy for a few mins and its at 99. most healthy people dont have any o2 sat issues. like the nurse said really above 92 is fine so theres no real reason youd feel different going from 95 to 99
