I was literally watching the Friends from a small car video player in a bath tub daily basis - in order to learn to speak English! I had subtitles on and off, which were extremely helpful. Marsha’s story filled my heart with mixed emotions, it’s so sweet that she started when her husband died and held the memory of him thinking that it looked amazing watching a ice skater with her. But it’s so heartbreaking her husband died and that’s when she started that feeling must have loomed on her for a bit “why couldn’t I have started when he was around to watch” must’ve turned into “he is here watching me in spirit (if she’s religious probably something like he is watching down on me from heaven) and that feeling must send warmth into her while she skates. There’s passion from her blades sent shivers like he was right there with her happy for her and she could feel his energy with her ❤ it’s so bittersweet

Coming back to this in 2024 made me feel great. I’ve been on and off of figure skating for years and I’m now starting to really want to get into it again, and this helped a lot to see. Especially as a disabled person with leg ✨issues✨ seeing the 60 year old woman made me realize “hay! If she can do it maybe I really can do it!” One of the first things I learned about skating was TO fall. Conquer your fear and learn how to do it best. It’s better to know the pain than deal with the unknown. I’ve taken that with me. Lol If you read all that thank you. ^^

Watching this as a Paralympic alpine skier I have to say it’s amazing how you progressed and it truly shows the lessons I’ve learned over the years. My specialty is slalom and one of the things you find out over time is that you will never have a perfect slalom race. No matter what you are going to make mistakes. It’s so quick and you have almost no time to think so all you can do is trust your own abilities to counteract any mistake you make. The hours of training and effort that go in behind the scenes for that one competition is something most people don’t see. There’s a lot of sacrifice and struggle as you push towards that goal. You have to sacrifice in order to push forward and it’s great to see you show even a small taste of what that is like. When I was in middle and high school I drove an hour and a half almost every weekend to train with better coaches than were available in my hometown. I don’t have any lasting friends from high school really because of that, but the sacrifice was worth it when I got to compete on that world stage for the first time. Now I continue to strive to be better and see what else I can achieve in my sport. Hopefully everyone else who sees this can use it in their own life as motivation to keep pushing themselves further than they ever thought they could.

Now that I'm in college and got a job, I told myself that while I'm still a teenager (19 btw) and still young I should just go for it because the longer I wait the more I'll regret it. Sure, I most likely won't get to the olympics or anything but imagine what I'll be like in 5 or 10 years time! I'll still be young. It's never too late! Marsha (the older lady skating in the vid) and Michelle gave me so much inspiration, I don't care if I'm the only adult taking the learn to skate lessons. I feel like I should be better by now and skating with girls my own age but It’s not something I can help. all I can really do is try my best and try to get the skills down so I will be able to test out of the level! I have to remind myself frequently that it is not a contest of who’s the best at the youngest age it’s about self-improvement. I sometimes forget these girls have been skating since the age of 5 and I’ve only been skating for one year. keep your head up and remember, you’re there to improved yourself and you will only waste time focusing on others

As a former figure skater, a couple of points: Cold: You get used to the cold--I can't explain how besides that after years and years of doing it, you just don't even notice (until you get off the ice). Gear: Michelle mentioned getting really expensive gear; excluding blades and boots, you don't necessarily need the warmest clothes as you advance. If I had a hard session, I could easily be a t-shirt because I got so hot. When you are higher up (doing advanced jumps or spins), you just don't stop moving (and your coach is watching you even when you aren't in a private lesson!), so warmth is not the same factor at the beginner stage. Falling: It is TOTALLY true! The older you get the more scared you become. If you cannot start this sport young, it will be hard simply because adults know the risks (and your body is less loose). A fall that looks really bad to spectators isn't even that bad haha--you also learn where to place your body when you fall cause you've probably fallen on that ONE hip about one thousand times (or my personal favorite you body does a nice slliiidde across as the ice). My biggest recommendation would be to tuck your head in--do not let your neck snap back or you will end up with a concussion! Michelle did an good job! This sport is for the fearless, the determined, and the strong--I recommend anyone go out and trying figure skating or ice dancing (if you don't want to do any jumps or spins!).

It’s true once you warm up with stroking and a few jumps you strip out of your sweater/sweatshirt... I used to practice in sleeveless dresses, and I didn’t get cold. You only get cold if you stop moving! And your coach is always watching, even if it’s not your lesson! Get out there and have fun!

@@sstrawberryprincess I mean, it's possible. There are figure skaters for the US (johnny weir) who started at 14 (i think) and won gold at the Olympics. It all depends on how quickly you can pass your skating tests and learn your elements. But yes, go for it, maybe you can reach the Olympics.

I'm 17 and wish I would've done some type of sport when I was a kid, so I often think I am too old to do stuff now too, but props to you Michelle for doing all these challenges, its motivating to see.

You're still young, my brother who is in high school, has never played a sport in his life but I encouraged him to join the tennis club because it will give him discipline and the sensation that you belong somewhere, year and a half later he is playing for the varsity team at this tennis club. Just give it a try to whatever sport you want to do , better late than never.

I will say as a ballet dancer and figure skater, it helps, but I still really struggle with spins since it's so different from pirouettes yet similar. Mind you, I did ballet about 15 years before starting figure skating though lol so ballet is extremely ingrained into me.

It's understandable, too. For me, once I fail and notice that the world didn't end and that I can try and try again... that's when I start to feel confident because I know that as long as I don't give up I'll eventually be able to do it

Hey Michelle after seeing this I am just in complete awe of your perseverance. Seeing you trying and trying even on your worst days inspired me so much. Seeing you fall and then get right back up and ultimately secure the second position made me realize that it's not how you did or how many people liked it but rather about the satisfaction that you had after giving your hundred percent on that stage. I know you are not going to read this but I just wanted to say that keep going and thank you for this Michelle. ❤
