What if I told you that the fruit many Jamaicans eat for breakfast every day also happens to be one of the most poisonous fruits in the world? In this video we’ll learn about the history of the ackee fruit, how it came to be such a staple of Jamaican cuisine, the proper way to prepare the fruit so that it’s safe to eat, and how to make ackee and saltfish, the national dish of Jamaica. New to our channel? We're the Sognonvi family from Top Flight Family, and we're all about luxury family travel, family vacation and kids travel! If you like family travel vlog videos about a traveling family, you'll enjoy what we do here.

Just to give you an idea of how serious the toxins in ackee are... Chef Gordon let us keep two ripe ackees so we could capture some photos/videos of them for this video. But the unripe ackee, he didn't let us hang onto that one lol. Just in case we tried something!

Honestly as a Jamaican living abroad in an area with few Jamaicans this video honestly made me so happy. I loved the interview with the chef. Great touch. I even learned more about the history. This was great. Thanks. I'm about to order a can of ackee for delivery to make ackee and saltfish so I can really get that feeling of home 🤗.

I would LOVE to try ackee and saltfish one day. It looks so good! I tried ackee, from a can, and I tasted it but it was so bad! Even when I seasoned it. Never doing that again

Your parents NEVER prepared unripe ackee, cook the seeds, or the pulp. That is the only way you will get low blood sugar. I learned about this in nursing school in Jamaica from the Pharmacology instructor.
