My husband and I have an afternoon tea every Saturday at home. My Mother did the same. When it is spring or summer, we take it in the garden. It’s an English tradition that I like to keep going. We do not always have scones, tomorrow we’ll be having hot cross buns as it is Easter weekend.

I work in hospitality and spend most of my time in central London. Afternoon tea is a serious profit earner!! The GM of an extremely well-known hotel once told me that his costs, on average per person, are about £3.00 for afternoon tea. At the time, he was selling it from £63.00 upwards. He also said, that as a general rule, he’s booked out about three months in advance.

TripsandFeasts .............absolute rubbish..........there is no way in hell it would cost just £3 to make all the products served in a well known hotel even just for the cost of raw materials wholesale without staff wages/time making the edible products...........try making A/tea at home yourself and youll quickly find your comment was BS.

How do you know that Geoff? My source of information (told to me in 2019) is the GM (general manager) of the entire hotel. He’s not the gm of one department. Maybe the £3.00 is now £5.00, but either way, it’s still a serious profit earner.

As children we would be taken to the Ritz or Fortnum & Mason for afternoon tea which are the long standing traditional tea places, especially for English families 'up' from the country or on half term from boarding school. What passes for afternoon tea in the big hotels today is lovely but a far cry from the traditional afternoon tea which would be followed by dinner later in the day. I defy anyone to eat that sort of teas followed by a three course dinner! The current afternoon tea menus are primarily aimed at tourists and a great money spinner between lunch and dinner.

My mom & I did Afternoon Tea at the Ritz because we figured it was the step under having at it at the palace 😂 I could not believe the level of fancy -- I'm someone who really enjoys a luxury experience and that was to a level I was almost uncomfortable with. There was always like 4 servers around and as soon as one thing was gone from the platter, they refilled it. It was very intense but of course an unforgettable experience. I also did one at Hotel Cafe Royal in the Oscar Wilde Room and it was absolutely perfect

My first husband & I lived in London on & off for several years. WE lived in his Father's house in London.Anyway - his Dad did like tea in the afternoon so I became very good at baking scones. But in our life it was butter and cinnamon sugar as that was how his father had after school tea growing up. A few times I did have afternoon tea out with friends at Harrods and it was so much food we never ate any dinner! The scones were wonderful and large, the cakes were delicious. It was all just wonderful. Most of those we met having tea at Harrods were tourists - no Londoners.

I had my best London Afternoon Tea with the family of my B&B facility 20 years ago. The mother talked about her nervous breakdown the night before when the daughter came back drunk from a X-Mas party. We also had some kind of punch with "a little drip of Whisky" while the "drip" wasn't that little in fact 😉. I loved the scones and egg and mayo sandwiches a lot.

This brought back found memories. My father was from England, sometimes we had afternoon tea, but we always ate our evening meal at 8:00 PM. It was a lot more casual at home than it was when visiting his side of family abroad. After watching this, I am tempted to start the afternoon tea ritual again. $217.00, pocket change! Sheesh! However, if cost were not an issue, I would love to be at the Four Seasons. The Idea of eating while smelling perfume . . . I can see and hear my father saying, "Blasphemy!" while fluttering his lashes, furrowing his brow and shaking his head with incredulous distaste. He was a wonderful man. Thank you for the memory. "No, it's baby spinach!" Adorable kids!

For me, a cream tea would be a nice treat, but, as London prices are a rip-off (I know, that's only my opinion), I wouldn't even dream of spending nearly £40 on a cream tea (let alone £400+ for an afternoon tea!) for two adults and two children. I would be too busy leaving the building, whilst echoing my Yorkshire's friend's frequent comment of, "How much?! You're joking me, love!" 😉

Dont forget to see the breath taking room for lunch. It defys description for its exquisite beauty and elegance. They will do a birthday cake if desired and sing the song to delightfull piano music. Why go to a international luxury chain for an afternoon tea? You’re in the home of afternoon tea. It would make more sense to go to one of the old grand dame hotels such as the Dorchester or Claridge’s, so much more character and tradition. Especially the Ritz, which arguably has the most famous afternoon tea. Fortnums would be another good shout. Selfridges is NOT a cheap place to eat.

As you mentioned in the video, in the original version of the cream tea at Tavistock Abbey the cream was served on bread. Scones are a relatively modern introduction and originate from Scotland. In the past, in Devon, the cream and jam would have been served on small, round, light white bread rolls known variously as splits, toughs or chudleighs. Staying with farming relatives as a child I was occasionally given bread and cream topped with a drizzle of golden syrup for breakfast. This combination was known as "thunder and lightening". In Cornwall, saffron cake, a delicious (and expensive on account of the saffron) fruited yeast cake baked in a loaf tin, is sometimes eaten topped with clotted cream instead of butter.

You know what I'd love to see a video of? Charming, chic and affordable accommodation in Nantucket! It's on my bucket list, along with Martha's Vineyard and P-Town but HOLY SMOKES-- the prices! Everything is expensive, there just doesn't seem to be anything reasonable in price. I'm very well travelled and always hunt down beautiful, gorgeous hotels and airbnb's for prices that are 'do-able', but Nantucket's average ballpark is just not justifiable for me. All the places priced as I would hope are either far out of the main centre or incredibly ugly and shabby. I search for videos on this and they're hard to find. I wish someone could explain why that particular area is priced so impossibly high, certainly when you see what little you get for your money. Hope you'll get to return to England and discover new places to enjoy soon. :)

I did this just once years ago, at the Dorchester hotel, with my Father who was elebating his 85th birthday at the time. This was a champagne afternoon tea, and I remember it cost me 45 pounds per person at the time. I admit that it was a nice experience, and maybe forva super special occasion, it's a nice thing to do,but on the whole, I personally find it a bit overrated.

High Tea is the working class version, I loved that you mentioned how much fun it was, what a great memory to have! It's like that scene in that cheesy Titanic movie where Rose went to dance and drink and run amok with the 'lower classes' below stairs. Sure, the upper classes have their own ribald indulgencies but as you will surely attest, it's just not the same ;)

@@ciganyweaverandherperiwink6293 The High Tea is definitely not just a working class thing. The aristos serve it too but with more elaborate food like cold filet beef, poached/smoked fish, blinis with caviar, fancy savory finger sandwiches, scones and pastries all taken with pots of teas and buckets of bubblies. The High Tea at Fortnum & Mason is the one to do - not cheap but very good value for money. I think it is about £75 per person.

I recommend Fortnums for tea, not The Ritz; The Ritz's afternoon tea is full of tourists and yokels from the Shires LARPing the experience of being wealthy and cultured. Fortnum's is lower key and considerably more chic. My favourite place for scones and tea in the UK will always be teahouses in converted cottages in tiny hamlets adjacent to farms and farm shops. It quietly bruises my heart to think of how much international tourists miss because they never get the chance to leave London, and secondly because their wildest 'Pride & Prejudice' fantasies are impossibly difficult to get to for total newcomers unfamiliar with narrow country lanes and who don't have rental cars they're confident in driving. Those laneways fenced in by hedges challenge even competant English city folk so just imagine a non-Brit attempting them! :D PS= I'd love videos about authentic country pubs, ones with black labs, farmers, crackling log fires and authentically old, patinated interiors that look ancient and remain untouched by the gruesome vision of modern 'gastropub' renovations. They're harder and harder to find in 2022. I love them.

@@elizabethw.454 Every basic but well-intentioned person will excitedly recommend 'Betty's' in York and in Harrogate. Ignore them. Betty's is certainly an institution of sorts but the queues can be HORRIBLE so your timing and enjoyment of the experience/crowds is really a luck of the draw type of thing (same can be said of museums and galleries etc, right? :D) It's one of those places that deserves its reputation though, the service is so charming, the breakfast/brunch is terrific. If you're able to get to York or further over in Whitby you'll be spoilt for choice. York has THE BEST tiny, ultra-traditional pubs in the vein described above. One pub with a fireplace is the size of my bedroom, I'm not joking. You'll love it, easy to google and find them all. Now, teahouses: I'd have to get back to you on this as I'm not sure which villages, towns and cities are on your itinerary. Gorgeous part of England, the North. Edinburgh too. Lucky you! And Haworth, too.

@@elizabethw.454 Oh, if you could swap Scarborough for the 'Dracula country' of Whitby (it's a very short drive away) then I would say 'do it, for sure'. And York is a MUST. You can't forget to visit the German handmade Christmas decoration shop-- it's a few floors of the most beautiful, detailed, quirky, eccentric tree baubles you've ever seen. It's in the Shambles, a little further up from the Harry Potter wand shop (again with the horrible queues, you'll not be remotely surprised to hear :D)). And the Jorvik Viking musuem is great, definitely go. The Lake District I've been to but have no idea about teahouses there. If I discover any that are highly recommended I'll pop back and leave you my findings, don't worry! You're going to have such a marvellous time, I'm most envious. :D xo PS= Unsure if you're staying with friends, in a caravan, airbnb or a hotel in York, but if you're looking for hotels then I can personally recommend The Grand. They have a lovely lounge bar to have pre dinner cocktails in. :)

Thank you for this lovely review. I had afternoon tea at the Savoy last week, and it was lovely. I think it was about £100 per person, but that didn’t include champagne which was mega expensive a glass. I’ve had afternoon tea at the Ritz too, and that was also lovely. There is a strict dress code for both, and you have to book both months (months!) in advance. In fact to meet the demand, afternoon tea starts at 11 am, for both, and you book a time slot. They are very good at getting you through and out before you know it, so the next group can come in. It doesn’t feel rushed, but they definitely get you in and out in your allotted time. The worst cream tea I had had to have been at the Royal Lancaster Hotel. It was a long time ago now ( well I’d gone there to meet Princess Diana, who was attending a charity event, so that will tell you how long ago it was ). Afterwards I stayed on for a Devon cream tea - it was really reasonably priced - until it became apparent it didn’t actually include the pot of tea, only the scones , cream and jam. Incidentally regarding the cup holding ‘etiquette’ - I’ve seen members of the royal family hold the cup with fingers through the handle, so I wouldn’t worry too much about what the etiquette expert says.
@bobbbxxx
@bobbbxxx Жыл бұрын
I agree on the fingers through the handle thing; that is a long forgotten "etiquette". Holding the other way is so easy for the cup to slip and you would spill all over your lap. A lot of these etiquette rules were made back in the day when teacups for a lady would be very small.
