We visited Brașov and Sibiu to sample traditional Romanian food dishes! Overall, this was an excellent country for food, and even more than that we just had a blast making this video. At this point, trying different foods is certainly locked in as one of top 3 favorite things to do while traveling. In this case, it was our way of stepping into traditional Transylvania times! The food did not disappoint (except for the few that did)!
In the end Cascaval pane (Transylvanian Fried Cheese) was the only food in this video that gained our official stamp of approval! This doesn't mean there wasn't other enjoyable parts of this food tour, but we try to reserve this stamp for our shared, absolute favorites.
Our last video ( • SIBIU IS THE HIDDEN GE... ) featured a meal that also gained the stamp.
The best way to support our creative journey is to leave a comment down below ;)
0:00 - Intro
0:39 - Ciorbà de Fasole cu Afumaturà si Tarhon
1:36 - Sarmale
3:46 - Cascaval pane
4:58 - Tochitura
6:33 - Mici
8:19 - Covrig
Sibiu, Romania was named as a top city to experience Transylvanian cuisine in every single online blog we looked to. So during our month long stay in this amazing town, we tried dozens of different restaurants/vendors. I'm sure we have made this clear within the last few videos, but again, Sibiu truly is special. We recommend anyone visiting other (larger, more popular) Romanian cities to take a detour and include Sibiu on the itinerary.
Regarding the Mici, we actually think our pronunciation is way off, so excuse us there... but we really just picked the wrong spot. Good thing is, we fell in love with Romania and see ourselves potentially going back within the next few years! We will revisit lots of these foods and try many more. If you have ideas for other Romanian dishes feel free to comment them down below!

By the way folks: Cascaval is not mozzarella. It's a different kind of cheese with a very distinct taste. It is also famous in Bulgaria and some Eastern Mediterranean countries. Great video :)

Yes, we should have clarified! We were trying to compare it to the common American appetizer “Mozzarella Sticks,” even though Cascaval cheese is different (and much yummier!)

Fun fact: the name of the Romanian cheese, "cascaval" (which, by international standards would qualify more as a swiss cheese rather than a soft-rind or fresh cheese like mozzarella) that you were talking about, is phonetically appropriated from the name of the Italian cheese, "caciocavallo" but in regards to the cheeses themselves, the Romanian Cascaval tends to be sweeter, rather than aged and tangy as Italian caciocavallo, and you can also find a lot of variations of it where it's smoked. Hope you enjoyed this fun little fact, cheers! :D

You are absolutely right, if you don't eat it like that you miss a lot. You cannot just eat it without bread because is to fatty, beer makes all go away and readies your test for the next bite. And for the girl who did not like it, please don't say that are sausages...

Awesome video- you guys, missed to include deserts- Romania is a deserts heaven- the best I've ever tried so far in over 20+ countries I visited- try cozonac, haios, amandine, profiterol, savarina, dobos, different pies with fruits, etc. Edit, oh, I forgot- papanasi which are the famous Romanian donuts- the best I had in my life- American donuts have nothing on these one- no offense! (I'm American too).

Mici is not a sausage and on top of that, you tried it without bread it seems - Romanians eat a lot of bread. And baked beans are very Romanian and a very common dish. Tochitura is traditional but not eaten often and the recipe might vary from region to region - the one you had, with tomato sauce, is how most restaurants do it but less traditional.

Covrigi are indeed good with cream cheese or yogurt. Mici can be hit or miss depending on the restaurant so it's a good idea to try them from different places. If you like deserts, try cafeterias (here are bakeries where you can serve deserts). If you are going to Timisoara try Prospero, they are everywhere in the city, but their deserts are very good. They have good bread too, even though is a bit more expensive than from other bakeries.

Hi guys! I see you've tried some dishes and mainly the basics but there are more to try. We have few nice traditional sopus too, except the beans one that you already know.. You guys have to visit Romania in summer time for some fish dishes at the sea side. If you choose Vama Veche, you can have the fresh fish just captured and cooked in front of your eyes. Not only the food is nice in Vama veche but everything else is great there in the summer time. It is a touristic place and you can have an excellent night life just by the beach shore with lots of terrase, music and people having fun. July, August is best time to visit.

Mici that i recommend in Brasov at Restaurant Rapid, at Restaurant La Ceaun; or in Bucharest at Obor Market, Caruta cu Mici, La Cocosatu or La Ciotoianu For those who don't like mustard, mici goes well with fresh tomatoes, cabbage salad, pickles, mici are paired with mustard because it cuts down on that fatty taste You can also pair sausages with fresh tomatoes (especially cherry tomatoes) they complement each other very well.

While some of the foods and ingredients are thousands of years old and beans are pretty traditional, you should know that, along with beans, corn (and mămăligă = polenta but better), and potatoes (used in many traditional foods across EU, not just Romania) came FROM the Americas in the mid 1500s. We didn't have in Romanian Principalities before 1500s.

Romanian cuisine is heavily influenced by Ottoman cuisine in the South and East and by Hungarian, German and Austrian in Transylvania. Cascaval, sarmale, ciorba are Turkish words, but the dishes are not exactly cooked as in Turkey, they have a local flavor and sometimes the meat is pork, which is out of the question in Turkey. Sarmale in Turkey is only cooked with grapes leafs. We also cook sarmale with grape leafs, as Bulgarians, Serbians, Greeks, Turks, Lebanese, etc are cooking. We call sarmale the cabbage rolls that in Turkey are called ”dolmas”. Mici is the Romanian version of shish kebab and kebabcic from Bosnia, Serbia, but are pretty differently prepared.
