The Cape May - Lewes Ferry is an amazing service! So excited to see it getting the praise it deserves on KZbin! Edit: I totally agree that Cape May side could use some work with the shuttle/public transport. We sat in the crowded lot waiting to drive onto the ferry while loudspeakers clamored "New Jersey State Lottery!" encouraging all to buy before we crossed over to Delaware. That wasn't the Armenian flag, that was the Pride Flag! The Cape Henlopen Light you saw in the museum in Lewes no longer exists. It was constructed in 1767 and was the sixth lighthouse built in the colonies. In 1777, during the American Revolution, the lighthouse was almost completely destroyed by the British. The wardens repaired the damage and it was relit by 1784. In 1905, several tons of brush were placed about the tower and oil house to prevent the foundations and brick walls from being undermined by the drifting away of the sand. Before the structure's collapse in 1926, though, the tower had been discontinued as a lighthouse. Earlier in 1924, the lens was removed from the light for refurbishing and to be placed on display. One of my favorite lighthouses is Montauk Point! It was authorized in 1792 by George Washington and was built in 1796 out of sandstone, making it the first public works project of the US government, the oldest lighthouse in NY, and the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the US. When the lighthouse was authorized by Washington, the government purchased 13 acres of land for the lighthouse for just $250! Which is cheap compared to Hamptons real estate today where Hamptons homes can go in the millions! It has a height of 110.5 feet or 33.7 m and it takes 137 iron steps to reach the top, however it’s not the tallest lighthouse in NY as that is the Fire Island Lighthouse which is 168 feet or 51 m tall. The Montauk Point Light was designed by John McComb Jr., who worked on Alexander Hamilton's home The Grange, Castle Clinton, New York City Hall, the old 1792 Cape Henry Lighthouse in Virginia (the first federal construction project under the Constitution), and Old Queens at Rutgers!

This is pretty wild because those first two buses are the buses that I used to take every morning when I worked at the airport, and it was pretty much around the same time in the morning. The reason that the bus pulls into the PNC office building so early in the morning is because you can transfer to two other routes from that stop. If you want to get to any of the big logistics warehouses that serve the airport, you have to transfer to one of those other buses.

I mentioned this elsewhere but it bears repeating: it's funny that they mentioned that Delaware felt like an extension of Pennsylvania; up until June 15, 1776, it actually was part of Pennsylvania. They were known as the Lower Counties of Pennsylvania: New Castle, Kent, and Sussex-upon-Delaware. It's known as Separation Day because it's the day they separated from both the British Crown and from the authority of William Penn; it's celebrated in New Castle, Delaware's first state capital, every second Saturday in June.
@CapeMayLewesFerry19644 ай бұрын
It's a great party in Historic New Castle, but let's be fair, William Penn first landed in New Castle, DE before he went anywhere else - so it might not have been Delaware then but it is now. And they are still the "First State."

Ah yes, gambling...real fans remember when you and Classy Whale gambled in Atlantic City to win back money from your Greyhound fares! The Harrah's casino in Chester was built on the site of the former Sun Shipbuilding campus. The company was developed by Sun Oil Company, and launched its first ship in 1917, just as the US was entering World War I. By the start of World War II, Sun was among the country's five largest shipyards, with eight slipways. Twenty slipways were added during the war, making Sun Ship the country's largest shipyard. At its peak, the company employed more than 40K workers at four shipyards! Sun Shipbuilding built 281 T2 tankers during World War II, about 40% of the US wartime total! In February 1971, they built the Glomar Explorer, designed and built for the CIA to recover the Soviet submarine K-129. The company was sold to Pennsylvania Shipbuilding in 1982, closed in 1989, the racetrack opened in September 2006, and the casino opened in January 2007.

Option side round trip Southsea to Gosport (another ferry), optional extra buses on Wight to pick up the Island line rail (old underground trains) to get to Ryde. 3/ Southampton start: overland to Lymington, Ferry 1 (Wightlink to Yarmouth), bus to East Cowes, side round trip on the Floating bridge (technically another ferry), Ferry 2 (Red Funnel) back to Southampton.

Out of the route shields in the US, my favorites are California, New Hampshire, Kansas, Utah, Guam, and New Mexico. Like the Guamanian seal, Guam's shield is in the shape of a Chamorro sling stone, which was used as a weapon for warfare and hunting. Chamorro sling stones were quarried from basalt and coral. California's route shield is in the shape of a miner's spade, to honor the California Gold Rush! Kansas's state route shield is a sunflower as Kansas is the Sunflower State! New Mexico's state shield design is based off the Zia sun symbol which is also on the state flag! The Zia regard the Sun as sacred. Their solar symbol is painted on ceremonial vases, drawn on the ground around campfires, and used to introduce newborns to the Sun. Four is the sacred number of the Zia and can be found repeated in the four points radiating from the circle. The number four is embodied in the four points of the compass, the four seasons, the four periods of each day (morning, noon, evening, and night), the four seasons of life (childhood, youth, middle years, and old age), and the four sacred obligations one must develop (a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit, and a devotion to the welfare of others), according to Zia belief. New Mexico's state capitol is unique in that it has a circular design, designed so it resembled the Zia sun symbol when viewed from above! New Hampshire's state route shield is the Old Man of the Mountain (or Great Stone Face by the Abenaki) which collapsed in 2003. There's an interesting Abenaki legend about the former face that the mountain formed: A human named Nis Kizos was born during an eclipse. He became a good leader and provider for his community. Nis Kizos was successful enough to attend Kchi Mahadan, a great gathering of other communities to trade. Tarlo, an Iroquois, returned with him. They fell in love. Tarlo had to return to her birth village because its people had been struck by a sickness. Nis Kizos promised he would live at the top of the mountain. By day he would look out for her, and at night he would light a fire to guide her back. With winter fast approaching, the elders sent Nis Kizos's brother Gezosa to bring him back. He was unsuccessful because Nis Kizos maintained his promise. Tarlo died in her birth village of sickness. After the winter, Gezosa went back up the mountain to bring the news of Tarlo and retrieve Nis Kizos. He found no signs of the existence of Nis Kizos and was stricken with sadness. On his way back down the mountain he looked back and found Nis Kizos had become part of the mountain as a stone face to look after the land. So when the face fell in 2003, you could say he finally was re-united with Tarlo.

On difference between Delaware and Pennsylvania. Around Wilmington, you wouldn't see a difference. But the Lewis-Rehoboth-Bethany ares are very very different. There are also inland areas that are mostly farming. On the road to ferry: there are 2 bike paths from Rehoboth Beach to the ferry. One is the Gordon Pond from near Biden's beachhouse to Cape Henlopen park and gets to the road east of ferry. The other is the Junction & Breakwater trail from the northen end of Rehoboth ave (where it meets the 1) ad meets with Savanah Rd just before bridge. (and then nromal road to the ferry).

Cape May downtown does have small town flair. South of Bethany (like right at the limit) are tall buildings and once you skip Fenwick Island park, you get to Ocean City MD which is identical to Wildwood. But Bethany and Rehoboth do have a fair. Also if you bike around you will see Biden. Welcome our home area of Jersey Shore. That sunset is every day for us. It's sad you didn't show more of the trip from Wildwood to Philly, but it's a great video!

The Commodore Barry Bridge was named after John Barry, an Irish-born Revolutionary War hero and Philadelphia resident. He was appointed as a captain in the Continental Navy in December 1775. Barry was the first captain placed in command of an American warship commissioned for service under the Continental flag. After the Revolutionary War, he became the first commissioned American naval officer, at the rank of commodore, receiving his commission from President George Washington in 1797. And yeah, Frank Furness was a cool guy. He designed more than 600 buildings, most around Philly, had influence on the Chicago-based architect Louis Sullivan (the father of modernism), and he also received a Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War for his gallantry at the Battle of Trevilian Station in Virginia when he served as captain and commander of Company F, 6th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. He even designed custom furniture for a number of buildings. In 1873, Furness designed interiors and furniture for the Manhattan city house of Theodore Roosevelt, Sr., father of the President Teddy Roosevelt, and paternal grandpa of Eleanor Roosevelt. Although the house was demolished, the furniture from it survives at Sagamore Hill on Long Island, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Besides the Fisher Fine Arts Library, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia and stations like the one in Wilmington, he also designed cottages like Dolobran in Haverford for shipping magnate Clement Griscom, Lotta Crabtree Cottage in Mount Arlington, NJ, the Emlen Physick Estate in Cape May, and Idlewild in Media for his family. Yes as mentioned, Lewes was the first European settlement in Delaware, a whaling and trading post that Dutch settlers founded in June 1631, and named Zwaanendael (or Swan Valley). The colony had a short existence, as a Lenape tribe indeed killed all the settlers (there were 32 settlers) in 1632. The area remained neglected by the Dutch until, under the threat of annexation from the colony of Maryland, Amsterdam made a grant of land at the Hoernkills (the area around Cape Henlopen, near Lewes) to a group of Mennonites for settlement in 1662. The settlement was established in 1663, and lasted until the very next year in 1664 when the English captured New Netherland, and they ordered the settlement razed. The Dutch colonists proved slow to regroup, but a new settlement gradually regrew around the Hoernkills. In late December 1673, when the area was briefly held again by the Dutch, the settlement was attacked and burned down again by a group of Maryland colonists. In 1680, under the authority of the Duke of York, granted by his brother, King Charles II, the village (and county) was reorganized and known for two years as New Deale, Deale County, Delaware. In 1682, the Delaware colonies were given to William Penn by King Charles II as payment for a family debt. When Penn arrived in the Americas that year, he renamed the county as Sussex and the Hoernkills settlement as Lewes, in commemoration of the county and town in England.

@@AverytheCubanAmerican it's also funny that they mentioned that Delaware felt like an extension of Pennsylvania; up until June 15, 1776, it actually was part of Pennsylvania.

@AverytheCubanAmerican my great grandfather from Ireland at the time of the opening of the commodore Barry Bridge was the president of the chester aoh (ancient order of Hibernians) its an Irish American club and thus was the leader of the parade ceremony that walked across the bridge when it was opened and later in the late 90s my dad was a bridge painter in the painters union and did painting on the commodore Barry Bridge

I guess I’m an “industry foamer” since I work right where you pointed. They built that crane over the past few weeks. Then the ride on the 13 was right around the corner from where I live. Had I known you were coming through town I would have gotten up early and said hi.

26:50 “Some people just stay on..” Yes! It’s a very fun day trip to ride the ferry to Cape May & back and not hassle with getting into Cape May. On Friday evenings they have a happy hour crossing with a band on board. On Wednesday evenings they have live entertainment at that restaurant and bar at the pier I was just there in June while visiting Rehoboth! Ended up relaxing at the pier for an hour or so. (The times didnt work out for doing the crossing and getting back in time for dinner..) The restaurant looks decent - I thought you all might have had some food and a cocktail there. Agree the phone booking situation is frustrating. And the super early check in requirement makes no sense for foot passengers Fun fact: the ferry terminal used to be quite a distance from “downtown” Lewes (where that museum is) but the area has been quite built up since the pandemic. A lot of people moved full time to the beach, so a lot more housing was built. The reason so many people bring campers onto the ferry is because there is a HUGE state campground complex a few miles south of Rehoboth. All in all I LOVE the Delaware beaches and beach culture. Jackson was in no way qualified to say Delaware has no personality. He has not visited Rehoboth, Dewey and Bethany Beaches. Or any of the inland towns. I even like Wilmington! Delaware honestly has some of the most beautiful beaches in America. I hope you go back someday and visit all of them! Honestly, I like them so much better than the ones that I’ve been to in New Jersey. PS I don’t actually live in Delaware but I love my vacations there. You forgot to mention there is no sales tax in Delaware! Now that is an admirable state personality trait! ☑️

"I can't read the ferry name, what do your elvish eyes see Jackson?". Carrying on with this idea you should do some fellowship of the ring themed race content or something.

Were you feeling athletic, it would have been possible to walk out of the Cape May ferry terminal using the road along the beach (no sidewalk, but it looks as if it has very little traffic, so safe), then across North Cape May to catch the #552 bus to AC at the stop by the stores at Bayshore x Townbank. It's about a couple of miles, but the walk looks pleasant enough through a residential area. Keep bringing these “pointless journeys” of yours. They are a great way of showing transit (or the lack of it...) in the US.

I've taken the DART 305 beach bus several times (always departing from Lane C :P). It's interesting, for sure, and nice to have, but I do still wish there were other options to get down Route 1 through Delaware, since that bus only runs on weekends and holidays during the summer. Greyhound used to have a bus from Philly and DC going to Rehoboth, but they cancelled those years ago, so now the only option to get there from Philly is to use either that bus or to go through NJ as you did on your way back (which takes a lot longer). I hadn't considered taking two buses to Wilmington to catch the 8am departure, I always just took the first SEPTA regional rail train to Wilmington (annoyingly arriving at 8.15-8.30) and then waiting for the 9.30 beach bus. The 9.30 bus usually gets stuck in more traffic, though, so it was often more than an hour behind schedule by the time it got to Rehoboth.
