i half agree with this theory because if you think about it, Greed island IS a tutorial for another arc but not Dark continent, instead it's a tutorial for the Chimera ants there are a lot of parallelisms i could talk about, like Genthru and his rose explosions and how that reflects the Poor man's rose, but the biggest is this one: Up until CA arc there isn't a real "hunting" arc in the show, where you see the characters battling something unknown which is what you expect when you start the show so at the end of Greed island, when gon uses his free card, he has two options: go alone to meet his father, or go with Killua to meet kite so that they can HUNT something with him, for the first time, and this ended up being the chimera ants. Gon was taught all he needed in GI: he had intense training with bisky which they later continued, he made a ton of allies that helped them which mirrors how Gon and Killua trust Meleoron and Ikalgo, and learned to work with a team as well. CA arc was the real proof of his worth, cause it's about him trying to rescue kite, the man that had already found his father, so if Gon can't save Kite it means he's not strong enough to find ging. and it's ironic that ging DID want gon to meet him at the end of Greed island, as long as Gon was alone, and we're told it's because ging is shy which makes sense, but you could interpret it as Killua "stopping" gon from getting what he wants, same way he stopped gon from fighting pitou twice, and GI arc ends with gon saying "first thing I'll do is present killua to my father" and that never happens, gon and killua end up kinda hurt in their relationship instead. It's almost like an indirect lesson for gon, that even though he completed Greed island, if he wants to follow his dad's footsteps he has to do it alone, just like him

I think Killua's quick pickup on Greed Island's mechanics spoke more to his strong experience with video games, and Gon's complete lack-thereof, than their experience as Hunters. Killua's secluded upbringing made him super familiar with the workings of toys and games (see: yoyos, darts), whereas Gon was more of the outdoorsy kid interested in more traditional stuff.

In order to play, you had to find a copy for sale, a way to earn billions of Jenny, or a way for an owner of the game to let you play it. Not to mention the ring and memory card. That also meant that the aura used to power it could only be experienced by a relatively small number of people at any given time, vs a World of Warcraft kind of traffic, so the aura would become supercharged.

it is very fitting that the two kids, gon and killua explore the video game/easier version of the dark continent (even though greed island is still very intensive), while the two adults, leorio and kurapika are on board the black whale 1 to the REAL dark continent. P.S, another great narative of HxH is that Don Freecs creates the guide for the dark continent, Ging Freecs creates a game around the dark continent and then Gon Freecs is the one to fully complete the game around the dark continent (and possibly kill a dark continent creature, pitou, single handedly)

The difference in power and finesse between the Nen users on Greed Island that could truly compete, and those just trying to survive, indeed paint a picture of Ging's bare minimum of Nen management in that regard. His intuitive training built into the game includes: - Targeting and identifying enemies - seeing how the opposition works - theory crafting on how to defeat an opponent and exercising proper conflict resolution skills - logging successful strategies away properly and seeing how they plug into other problems - a fully fleshed out card system to cultivate the practice of combining several supernatural powers into diverse attack plans and survival tactics - treating each ability given, as a finite resource to draw from, for help - being able to see a narrative play out and dissect it correctly to determine motives - how to trade and barter resources - how to determine a good's value, use, rarity or if the occasion calls to use them in the moment for utility and weighing out that cost. - And lastly, the in-game enemies train players into having proper basic Nen combat in the Shingen Ryu style (to the point where physically leveraging a situation With basic Nen in that way, is achievable and consistent, not relying on luck or brute forcing bad strategies) All that training and prep, while basically forcing philosophies of teamwork with others, while retaining a sense of secrecy and misdirection in your own motives and resources, because needed allies might not share a common goal or may be competing with you for resources. They might also need to be tricked/persuaded/forced into helping for various reasons. Also to top all that off, it all is catered to getting someone to that level without instructing about or needing a single self-made Hatsu to beat the game, so there's even more wiggle room for customizing one's load-out in that regard and any Hatsu made up on the spot to help deal with the game, would most likely serve one of the above mentioned problems and would end up most likely being useful in the expedition in some way anyway. Given Ging's showing with getting onto a team that's boarding the black whale one, and dealing with Pariston being their leader, it's actually sort of shown in real-time, how he pulls all these practices off himself, almost effortlessly and off of habit to great effect.

I think it's just how Togashi writes power in general. Nobody or nothing seems too OP in the HxH world, if something is really powerful, it has a big BUT attached to it (like nen restrictions etc.), so this reflects both in nen, in Greed Island, and on the Dark Continent

He's around 20 Years older and should of course be at least as talented as Gon, soooo he should be impressively close or even on the level of Netero, Youpi, Pitou, Pouf. Not talking about Gon-san, just Enraged Battle-hardened Gon. I wonder if this is a mistake cause i can barely think of another reason. It's extremly hard to downplay Ging's Superiority to his Son but easy to say he should even be better than a 30 yo Gon cause he got all the stuff making you good at Nen, this has really been illustrated repeatedly to us: Intellect; Creativity

I love this theory. It fits so well, and if Togashi didn't intend it, then it truly was a happy accident. Another fun connection between Greed Island and the Dark Continent is that one of the restricted slot is a "Fickle Genie," who will grant three random wishes out of 1000 you give it. We never even see it, but this card, as well as Breath of Archangel in my opinion, act as very nice, lower power parallels to Nanika, the other wish granter we see in the series. Maybe Ging knew about these wish grantors from the Dark Continent and wanted people to get some practice with how to handle wishing for things. How to use them as a resource rather than an end in themselves.

The chimera ants constantly get overestimated, the only reason they became such a huge problem is that they were able to easily adapt to the new environment and multiply quickly. But even with that they still wouldn't of been much of a problem for the hunter association if the chimera ants weren't capable of rapidly evolving from eating humans and consequently gaining nen abilities, they were basically set up for success because they were left alone for too long and severely underestimated at first allowing them to kill lower level hunters and gain nen abilities from eating them.

Ging could have done this because he really had no way of knowing exactly how long it would take Gon to find him and it’s possible that the requirements for Ging to go to the Dark Continent would have been fulfilled by that point in time and as such Gon would have also had to go there.

Here is my Chrollo and Hisoka theory…. It is a bit long Sun & Moon and Chrollo's identity crisis We see young Chrollo being able to imitate other fictional characters in perfect manner, so much so that it appears that he is the guy who is performing the role instead of that character. This represents chrollo's innocent nature and we get the first glimpse of Chrollo's identity. His identity was of a young charismatic kid who was willing to go extra mile for his friends and just be good to everyone in general, just like a young shounen protagonist. If everything went on smoothly we could have seen Chrollo grow up as a good natured man who is contributing positively to society in many ways, but things doesn't go as planned, his youngest sibling dies at the hands of Mafia and it completely shatters Chrollo's innocence, it essentially destroys his innocent identity and Chrollo is left without a specific nature, but one specific purpose i.e. revenge for Sarasa and making sure that what happened should never happen again to meteor city people. He formulates Phantom troupe as an extension of himself, and sets up the organization in the manner of a company, where he is the director and the rest of phantom troupe are members of the company, if he dies some other member can take his place, but the most important thing is the survival of the company that is "Spider". Chrollo assumes that spider is his identity, but in reality he feels he is still missing something, a purpose(we get this info when Gon contronts chrollo on why he kills people who had nothing to do with him). We notice that the initial purpose of the spider was to take revenge for Sarasa and create darknet to catch the culprits and make sure it never happens again. Along the ways we get clues that Spider have changes slightly, they have become an organization without a specific purpose, they do whatever they want. It seems Chrollo and other have at least achieved one specific objective i.e. finding Sarasa's killers, otherwise they would still be focusing on that aspect, maybe they found the people who killed Sarasa, but didn't find the main mastermind who was behind all the kidnappings. Now chrollo has done all this to establish his own identity which he lost years ago(The sweet innocent kid). HIs nen ability also reflects his lack of identity, Just like he steals the act of fictional power cleaners, he also steals nen abilities and makes them his own, he uses those nen abilities in ways the original user could not have even dreamt off. Enter Hisoka, the clown Magician. Hisoka represents the exact opposite kind of entity to chrollo, he oozes personality and identity, he is absolutely sure of what he wants and he won't change his ways, he is set in his ways unlike anyone Chrollo has ever met. This fascinates Chrollo to no end, so much so that other phantom troupe members also takes notice. We see Feitan in his intro scene is complaining to Nobunaga on why Chrollo let Hisoka do as he pleases, in return Nobunaga replies that because Hisoka is good. I believe the reason is because Chrollo is fascinated by Hisoka's character and wants to see him do as he wishes, as he seems someone with so much character and identity, something he lacks for himself. Chrollo feels compelled to let Hisoka do as he pleases. We see that how Hisoka betrays the troupe, causing Chrollo to lose his nen and death of Uvogin and Pakunoda. Chrollo essentially agrees to deal with Hisoka so that he can get his nen back, but he remembers that he needs to teach Hisoka a lesson. Hisoka, whenever he fights someone goes out of his way to reveal about Bungee gun( Bungee gum has the properties of rubber and gum), essentially flexing on his opponents that even when he reveals the mechanics of his ability, he will still win, he is absolutely sure. Chrollo decides that he will teach hisoka a good lesson by turning the tables on his, he immediately goes on to prepare for the battle, he steals Sun and Moon, Order stamp, and Convert Hands, he also borrows Black Voice and Gallery Fake from his teammates. He also modifies skill hunter by creating Bookmark to be able to use two abilities at the same time, by performing additional tedious conditions. He choses the location of the fight to give him home ground and on the day of the match he proceeds to explain all of his abilities and how they works to hisoka as a flex. Notice that the entire strategy of Chrollo revolves around Sun and Moon nen ability, as this ability is a nen after death ability, the original owner of the ability is dead and the ability is still active in Chrollo's hands. Now it is not possible to remove Sun and Moon from Chrollo's arsenal as there is no possible way to do it, it is a permanent nen ability available with chrollo, as long as chrollo is alive and able to use nen, he will always be able to use Sun and Moon. This ability shows what Chrollo truly is capable of, with Sun and Moon he is capable of using at least 7 or more abilities at the same time, and that is without holding the book i.e. he doesn't need to hold the book to be able to use multiple abilities as sun and moon will force those other abilities to remain open. Now we should pay attention to the fact that Sun and Moon has become an anchor point to almost all of chrollo's abilities as only with Sun and Moon he is able to express himself at his core level, he is strongest and most dangerous when he is using sun and moon. No other combo of abilities can even match the sun and moon. We notice that Chrollo has changed again and again, but after stealing Sun and Moon we see an identity of Chrollo at his most clearest, as with sun and moon he can express his will/nen the most After Chrollo has killed Hioska and left the area presuming that Hisoka is done for, he informs Shalnark that they will be travelling on the boat to the Dark Continent and also steal the treasure from Kakin kingdom, but when he notices that two of his abilities are missing and Machi reports that Hisoka has revived himself and Killed Shalnark and kortopi, and has threatened to kill the entire phantom troupe. He is worried for the first time about losing what he has built all these years. While he is slowly gaining an identity of his own through sun and moon, he is losing his identity through the spider. Now currently Chrollo is at his most vulnerable place, he doesn't have the abilities to utilize sun and moon at its most effective, he needs an abilities that manipulates either people or puppets, previously he needed Order stamp in conjunction with Gallery fake to manipulates puppets, but if Chrollo were to steal an ability that can manipulate large no of people without the puppet restriction of Order stamp, he will be able to use Sun and Moon at its fullest. Now for the speculation of what is to come, I believe that Chrollo and Tserriednich will come in contact and somehow Chrollo's past will come to the forefront of the entire plot thread. Chrollo at his end will go out in a blast caused by Suicide Bombing of sun and moon by manipulating himself and self destructing. Going forward all abilities that Chrollo steals will be either directly or indirectly in service to facilitate the full use of his sun and moon ability, and that will be Chrollo's identity, a terrorist who bombs people for revenge. The more Chrollo loses his friends, he will gain his own identity even more. In the end he will be a perfectly realized character, while Hisoka who had a sure identity of himself will lose his identity as a clown magician by the destruction of his body parts and will use texture surprise to cover himself.

If Nen weakens the hunting abilities needed to survive Dark Continent then Gon may actually play a huge role during the Dark Continent Saga if we ever get that far. This is 1 of the best theories I have heard so far & I'm curious what the full list of rules will be.

5:54 no wonder ging tells gon “see what you can do without nen” it’s possible ging prepared him from the very beginning to be able to survive in the dark continent. and while he evolved a lot, his nen fixation began to degrade his natural instincts he developed while growing up on whale island. now not only will he reattune himself to nature he will also pick up studying (thanks to mito) so he can develop the intellect he lacks too (he falls behind the other three of the original 4)

I thought we actually HAVE seen the DC… When Gon listened to the tape, we see Ging on a stack of beasts next to a real world tree in a storm that looks like the DC and we know that the KW doesn’t have a world tree that big. So where was he if not the DC?

I believe that nwr has done a video before on how exceptional hunters try to develop their own exams, mentioning how hisoka regularly tests people as though he's developing benchmarks for a standard that he will one day consistently use What I find interesting about that being a common behavior among hunters is how it reflects isaac netero's obvious attempt to teach people what they not only need to learn to be a hunter, but what basics that a hunter should keep in mind for an expedition like that As per usual disclaimer, this is not a claim of planning on togashi's part as much as reminder that the basics of hunting, presented in the beginning of the story, from what I see, are designed in attempt to prepare a person for the demeanor, thinking, perspective, maybe even perception, and resolve necessary to venture into this frontier

I'd argue that Greed Island was created to remind hunters of the basics and fundamentals of Nen, as most Hunters have become complacent and satisfied with their current power, even Tsezguerra noticed how he was lacking in the dodgeball fight, it serves as a reminder of how crucial is a solid understanding and mastery of the fundamentals can push you to greater highs.

To some degree, becoming a pro Hunter share similar stages. Getting to the land requires the captain of a ship to like you enough. Not everyone has the means. Not everyone is qualified. The rewards can be positive, but also warnings. Those taking the test are put in environments where many things can unalive them, but there are teamwork opportunities to tackle dangerous enemies (though it doesn't guarantee success).

I actually have a theory of the Dark Continent, one that I expect is true based on the information we got on Post-Mortem Nen, the Chirema Ants, and Allkuka abilities. This may not win me a lot of fans but hear me out, what I believe Togoshi is setting up is the Inverse of what he did In Yu Yu Hakusho in the Chapter Black Arc with the Introduction of Domain Users and the fact that they could not be defeated with pure strength. But I think Nen works differently on the Dark Continent, what if putting conditions on your Nen ability was to compensate for one's lack of Aura and you need to make your conditions simple so you can use your ability at any moment. What if there is a way for a person to gain more Aura and there is a technique to override a Nen ability on a person which we have seen Hisoka do on the Black Whale. This would mean that a person's Aura Output would be tied to one's strength and while strategy would be important if your opponent is stronger producing less Aura at that moment or is on equal footing with you it may come down to how much power you're putting in your ability and instead of how you use it in battle. The Dark Continent seems to be a more typical depiction of a Battle Shounen World. The reason Togoshi will try to do this is because it will give him more time to focus on the art and less time to worry about the complex battle strategies that are tied to a Nen ability.

Maybe thats why the author had Gon loose his nen so he has to go back to the basics of hinting and in doing so, redescover/relearn nen but this time with a "Hunter" as in hunting aninal type of mentality. So hell be equip when he has to go to dark continent. Same with Kilua who went on aventure to explore wild lands... Who knows what Nanika will teach him about her "Home" during that time

After rereading it ai had a similar thought when gon and Kil fought the monsters at greed island. The cards could be the items of the dark continent. While the Rank C/D monsters teach to look for weaknesses and not a overright who has more power. If anything, its more like a hunter training ground. Since the DC wouldnt have the cities and all npcs. Unless we learn DC has people. I do wonder if the DC was thought about prior to ths later part of the story.

My headcanon is, the dark continent is the demon world from yu yu hakusho. The surviving people that was not able to cross the plane when King Enma sealed the demon world found the known continent and stayed there
