Wear your seatbelts guys. As a volunteer EMT in rural Idaho and SD, I can tell you I never picked a dead body out a ditch that was wearing their seat belt. Life changing injury can happen in a flash and at slow speeds. Only saying it because I want you to grow old together!❤

I have a rock that I have been in love with for about 60 years. I found it while I was picking prunes on my grandfather's ranch. It means so much to me because it is the only thing I have from that ranch that is now covered over by houses. Rocks can hold a lifetime of memories even if they have no monetary value.

My dad was an earth science teacher. He was a total rock hound. We did a lot of summer camping and if he saw a rock shop the car would turn by itself into each one. We had a couple of tumblers and an 18” Diamond saw in our basement where he cut all kinds of stones- agate, quartz, geodes, you name it. Good for you for making your own cabs. Very fun.

That Highland Park is a good, solid unit. Use oil in your saw, but water on your wheels. You will need a bit more in the way of wheels and equipment. I suggest sitting in and watching another cutter work for a bit to get the hang of it. I have been a cutter for over 20 years, it gets quite addictive.

For those who know about the love of rocks, they know! I live in North Idaho which also has a long mining history. I grew up as a rock hound from both sides-my mom and her dad, my dad and his mom-so the appreciation for rocks is deeply engrained in me! We love to traipse to any local gem & mineral show, including the local fairs. My dad collects garnets and crystals from around Fernwood, ID. There's a garnet mine that just recently shut down there, and you can still pan for garnets in Emerald Creek and pick up dust and little bits. You can also find star garnets there. My dad's actually out on the back porch grinding on a rock right now. LOL My husband's boss' family owns a gem & mineral shop in Wallace, Idaho (Johnson Gems) that is a great little stop between Coeur d'Alene and Montana. SO needless to say, I loved your rock haul! And I'm super excited for that fancy piece of cutting/grinding equipment you've got there! :D

That shell is abalone! They make jewelry out of it in the southwest. They pry it off the rocks in the ocean at low tide. I used to have a lot of it. I love rocks too. My great grandfather was a Welsh miner and came to WV to mine coal and tin. My x spouse was an underground gold miner....he mined silver too of course. Even some mines in Colorado, AZ, NM, Oregon, Alaska, and New Guinea. That silver is very cool.

They are just so beautiful. My grandfather also used to tumble rocks and make jewelry, he was the type to wear those bolo ties too lol.

Elsa, your jewelry making skills have really progressed in such a short amount of time! Your settings are a beautiful complement to the gorgeous stones you choose. Combined with your leather working skills, I can envision (and hope for) some beautiful bracelets in your future! Using leather would also cut down on the silver cost (which is getting so out of reach now). As someone who likes to make beaded jewelry with gemstone beads, I’ve had to switch from sterling silver components to plated. I really admire your creativity and the attitude you have in learning new skills. You rock! (Silly pun intended. 😊) Rutilated quartz is one of my favorites. My parent's house sits where a glacier came down to then receded. You can see a huge glacial erratic (a large stone dropped by a glacier) from their kitchen window. The banks of a small creek near their house is lined with so many kinds of stones... all types... all colors... sandstones and limestones and quartz of every color and agates and fossils... and so many others that are lovely and always make me spend time sitting and staring at all the rocks. I didn't realize how special that creek bank was till I was older and noticed that other creeks were not the same. Thank you receding glacier for making such a special place. Edit: Also, my Dad keeps a rock in his kitchen cupboard that looks just like a potato. I mean, not a little like a potato, not resembles a potato, but full on looks like a potato. I know that the rock is there and still I pick it up and think, why do you have a potato in the cabinet with the dishes? Doh... Yeah, you're not alone in loving rocks.
