I've never quite understood how living in a hotel is cheaper than an apartment. Yeah, you have to get a deposit for an apartment, but it sounded like they previously had already been in an apartment and moved to the hotel (probably because rent went up). if your rent is something like $1,200/mo, that's only $40 per night. Add bills and you're probably around $45 - $50 a night. I don't think I've ever heard of a hotel in that price range.

You must not be in Florida... after deductions, you have $50k (this is assuming they don't have to pay major healthcare share). An average apartment is going to cost them about $30k year. Leaves them $20k. Renter and care Insurance is insane in Florida, easy paying $4k. Now at $16k. Food and general home items at $7k. Now $9k. Assuming a $300 car payment, now $5k. And I could go on, but I think you get the point. $75k in Florida in 2022 isn't much once you start breaking down costs to live... not even including having any fun or saving.

It's tempting to blame families like this for making stupid choices. But research has actually shown that chronic stress can drop your IQ by 15 points. So being stressed about money actually makes you stupider and less able to plan long-term. It's a vicious cycle. Only by reaching a stable financial state can people calm down and start thinking again. That's one reason why the 1000 dollar emergency fund is so important.

I was considering living in my car for several months to save up and withstand the prices but when I calculated the expenses (storage unit, office space, laundry, gym, more for gas and food) this would actually be expensive for such sacrifice. I always thought living in a car is almost free and if it came to the worst I’d just do this, however my estimate came to about $600 per month and surely there would be some extras I haven’t though of. And I have a good job but don’t work to balance at zero and give everything for living expenses.

You're right, being homeless can be more expensive than people think, as someone currently close to me at one point discovered. Especially if you work a job in which you are expected to look professional. SNAP benefits are very particular about using them for pre-cooked food, but you are unable to prepare any of your own. It also takes an unexpected toll on your mental health resulting in a downward spiral even the strong-minded can't fix.

I lost my career as psych nurse with my left leg. I now barely survive on 1920 a month, and care 24/7 for my disabled teen. There is no getting ahead here..unless I upgrade to MA degree to do therapy..gotta have a Masters, and 3000hrs supervised counseling to get licensed. A BA degree is useless in my field..but my son got into IT with a BA..I can't do that..38yrs a nurse..my path has to continue but a diff capacity. Young ppl..get the degree in where $$$ is good and jobs plentiful.

Sell the cars, buy to beaters cash. Add the car payments to the payday loans. Sell everything you can live without and reduce the payday loan. As much as I'm not a fan of loans, get a normal bank loan to pay off the payday loans. The interest is lower and once you throw in the extra cash from the car payments, the payof goes faster.

When I would take my dog to the vet (RIP) it was in a poor area of town. They had a Payday loan building. Another poor area on the other side of the cities also had multiple payday loan places and pawn shops. TOXIC.

They’re actually not in all that bad of a position depending on their car payments,insurance,state and local taxes and how much their monthly rent is.A balance transfer card is probably the best first step(after talking to a certified financial planner).These problems should take 4 to 9 months to fix.
