Honestly, I am over Hollywood's obsession with reviving popular older shows but slapping a modern context on it. Nostalgia is so bankable that Hollywood refuses to engage us with any new and relevant discussions. We know these shows had problematic elements but reckoning is not effective as the mythos of these projects are already engrain in the collective public consciousness.

I agree, not everything needs to be remade or rebooted. If they want to continue with "friend group and their navigation of love and life", do something new or exciting. They have the IP for the name and are looking to make a quick buck after the pandemic. I get it. Instead of bringing back these women that quite frankly the younger generation knows nothing about and hasn't watched Sex and the City, flip the series on its head. The new Gossip girl on HBO Max isn't continuing on with the old characters, they are starting with a completely new friend group. They should have done that instead of this limited series. Learn from the criticism that the old series has taken; make it more inclusive, make it more relatable, show a wide perspective of sexual relationships. Why not make one, if not the "Carrie" of the group, a sexual educator?

@elplebeuchiha19963 жыл бұрын
Yes, but unfortunately, numbers show that people will be more willing to give a show/film a try that they recognize than a new intellectual property (IP). John Wick being a perfect example. The first film was successful, but it doubled in success for John Wick 2. Moreover, John Wick 3 tripled the amount of success that the 1st film got. A large portions of people who wanted to watched the sequels never saw the original. They watched the original so that they could watch the sequel. So, that’s the thing, people may be upset at the BRAND NEW StarWars/Transformers/TMNT/Friends/Terminator/Jungle Book/Jumanji/Batman/Lion King/Dragon Ball Z/Matrix/Fight Club/ etc etc etc. The fact remains more people will be willing to watch an established IP than a non-established IP. Thus, you have to have a gimmick if it’s a brand new show/film. Like, this is a new Tarantino film. Even though the IP isn’t established, the director is. It can also be like the show, Power. Even though it’s a new IP, and the director isn’t as established as Tarantino. It is 50 Cent’s show. The rapper? The Hip Hop mogul? 50? That’s the gimmick. It can also be about who is in the film/show. It can be a mixture of these things like Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s a movie based on the popular Disney ride. The DisneyLand ride? It features the highly acclaimed actors, etc etc etc. The movie/show business is that, a business. Their goal is to make a profit. Things will only change until people vote with their money. Thanks for reading [+]

I do love Friends but I was SO HAPPY to hear that the "reunion" wasn't going to be a revival or new episodes or anything like that. I think that if they want to hype up sex and the city again, do something like that - imagine a conversation between the 4 main characters (or 3) talking about the show, what was groundbreaking, the best fashion moments, etc, etc, and yes, what was problematic too. Maybe they even talk about where they think their characters ended up, maybe we get extra content, or just rundowns of old clips. I think it'd be much more beneficial and way less tiring. The fans could get a taste of a reunion, something exciting, but it wouldn't just be recycling old material over and over again.

Like Seinfeld's take on gay people. It was a commentary on subtle homophobia among people who don't think they're homophobic. Emily slept with a friend’s underaged brother, for fuck’s sake! Then jumps in bed with her best friend’s brother. The show is offensively bad, not only to French culture, but to non-white people. I’m French by heritage raised with a lot of French culture and spent a couple months a year living in Paris a year before the lockdowns, and am offended at what they did. Even one of the writers was shocked that this show got Emmy nominations when other shows that she openly acknowledges are much better didn’t. Nobody likes it though. MAYBE you will get someone to come to your table and make a comment, but thats usually in a night/bar setting. Or a sloppy brunch. The wait staff might make more slights if the place is on the fancier side. Mostly because they don't want the restaurant associated with low brow behavior, but they'll most likely not admit to that. I probably wouldn't be cringing at this revival if it wasn't bringing back the old cast. Like, let's give this a face lift. Let's get new characters the same age as Carrie & co when Sex & the City premiered in the 90s. So much has changed in NYC alone, that it'd be interesting to explore.
@wweltz3 жыл бұрын
LOVE this idea! And if the old cast really want to be involved maybe all the new characters could be their employees or something. Like one could be a new lawyer at Miranda's firm, another could be working as a ghostwriter for Carrie (maybe she's gotten famous and prolific enough to do the James Patterson thing where none of his books are actually written by him anymore lol), and maybe another is an up-and-comer in the art world reaching out to Charlotte for advice and expertise. Idk, but I'd love to see the same premise with NEW BLOOD. It's why the Mandalorian works so well. We love Star Wars but we're all fucking sick of the damn Skywalkers. New story, new blood, same setting.
@seannanana843 жыл бұрын
That would be much better. The reboots that pass the torch while involving old cast members work fairly well. I mean imagine a 20 something post college fresh faced Gen Z kid being the "Carrie" someone who is a LBGTQ+ ally or part of the community themselves, someone who is super sex positive, pro sex work, anti slut shaming...I would love that. A new idealistic lawyer working for Miranda...I would love that.

Didnt Girls and Broad City sort of touch these items? Granted, more the millennial experience though. I think it would make more sense if it was in context to 30 somethings again, as that was the DNA of the original show. These women were established and still looking to mingle in a world that was (still is) incredibly agist toward women in their 30s/40s and heaven forbid 50s. I think focusing on the gen z experience is a great idea, but a different show, regardless of generational revamp.

For real. Carrie was honestly the only one in the group I could not be friends are cool with in the long run. There are pieces of media that are simply timeless because their stories and themes focus mostly on certain aspects of human nature. Sex and the City is NOT one of those pieces of media. It's very much a product of its time, and removing it from that time would either force it to be changed to a degree that makes it completely unrecognizable, or have it feel awfully displaced.

This vaguely reminds me of the whole "let's fix the past sins of zeitgeist" motif that's been revived with the recent reboot obsession of the past decade. Like how every Disney live-action remake of the classics cannot physically exist without hee-hawing at itself for all of the stereotypes it peddled back in the before times. At the end of the day, it's a thin veil of nostalgia taped over the obvious: no new ideas, so let's try to repackage the old ones for profit. Let it die!

When it was on TV I was in the middle of my I'm not like other women phase, and I didn't know I was demisexual. So I have no nostalgia/attachment. For the revival I would like to see more depth and nuance, maybe to show what it is like being in your 50s and 60s, or maybe if Samantha's gone what does her passing mean the other characters and real grief and focus on real friendships between them who know each other more than 30 years. But It is going to be definitely like Samantha is gone F ing every guy in Europe, Carrie wondering if Big doesn't find her sexy anymore and Stevie can't get it up or something... And I get it the show is called Sex and the City for a reason, but I think maybe it is time to leave it back in the 90s, rewatch it for nostalgia from time to time and maybe make another show that can show friendships between older women and their lives and marriages and be more inclusive.

As someone who never watched this show when it came out and only now have seen some episodes and clips, I have to say, I don't get the appeal and I'm the target demographic (early 30s). The women are vapid and seem to create their own petty problems. They are neither aspirational nor people to idealize. It may have been fresh at the time, but it has not aged well. I get the fashion in fun, but I would like to see more from a tv show about 4 independent women.
@Frosting10003 жыл бұрын
I mean ppl enjoyed it because these women weren’t idealized nor role models. I just think at the time there weren’t a lot of messy female main characters to root for. The need for every female character to set a good example is kind of limiting, especially since male characters can be appealing to a wide audience AND be a lot worse.

From what I know of it (nothing), it seemed like one of those personality quizzes where you and your friends have fun deciding who fits which archetype, but instead of answering questions it's packaged with characters for you to get attached to in the process. @SloanePaoPow3 жыл бұрын
@@Frosting1000 I'm all for more messy female lead characters. However Carrie is messy in the least compelling way. From what I've seen, her problems are champagne problems and/or self created. There rarely seem to be external struggles that affect her life, forcing her to make difficult decisions or compromises that could show character growth. That would be more real and relatable imo.
@Frosting10003 жыл бұрын
@@SloanePaoPow I mean we can agree to disagree. Im not denying that they’re spoiled rich white women or that some episodes didn’t make me cringe, but idk, I watched the whole show and liked it. This discussion has made me think of other shows that also aged poorly such as Moesha and The Parkers in some respects. I still love them too but recognize the dated references and the fact that they didn’t know then what we know now about fat shaming, homophobia, slut shaming (Frank especially, but Moesha at one point slur shamed her boyfriend at the time when she almost had sex with him towards the end of season 4), etc. I hate when a lot of FIRST TIME viewers try to trash the show on the basis of them having these flaws and aging poorly, but I myself as someone who grew up with these series, instead chooses to think: wow... times sure have changed! Lol. But I definitely agree we should just keep those shows in the past because when we do continuations and reboots, all it does is highlight those very flaws that were messed up in the first place. Also... Sex and the City without Samantha??? I don’t want it. But I also agree I would take pause if Janet Mock wrote it and ran it.

Deadass Parker’s is mix bag of fatphobic commentary & serious consent issues. I think continuing on older series via reboot Could work bearing that the bar of entry is not to off putting to newer viewers so no one is forced to watch the (problematic) original. so as a gay man who loves this show, I was pretty unhappy about the way the gay characters were treated as accessories and as one-dimensional sidekicks, whose love lives nobody actually took seriously. I hated it because I have been treated that way by many women over the course of my life. However, I have to admit that I also appreciate the realness of that. This IS how many upper-class straight cisgender white women navigate the world. I actually dislike media even more when it presents an idyllic progressive paradise wherein minorities are thriving and suffer no set-backs. That just lulls liberals to sleep, because it makes the world appear perfect and in no need of change. As much as it makes me sad to acknowledge, a lot of the problematic aspects of Sex & The City are things that real people say every day. Real people doubt the existence of bisexuality and accuse bi men of being gay all the time, even in 2021. Real people "other" transwomen every day, even in 2021. There is value in a show that depicts that, I think, because it makes it easier for us to hold the mirror to ourselves. In other words, I don't want shows to depict idyllic paradises until we've achieved an idyllic paradise. The best thing to do, in my humble opinion, would have been to have the characters behave exactly the way they did while eventually learning to see each situation in a different way. However, I can't deny that, as written, the show gives us a legit window into many straight cisgender upper-class American white women's lives. You know what I mean? They are privileged, and it shows.
@MaryamMaqdisi Жыл бұрын
I mean, we SHOULD show the realness, I agree with that. The issue is when shows don’t make it clear it’s wrong… like “haha funny transexual with pp doing sex work”, or “haha bi not real”. Make the characters be exposed to the truth (that these are pretty fucked up views), even if they don’t always learn or get better. It should NEVER present bigotry as being perfectly fine, as otherwise it comes off as reflecting the view of the writers. For example I don’t mind misogynistic characters if they’re written well. But the moment I see a movie where a guy seems to be walking around in a wet dream, all the women want to fuck him for no reason, all men envy him, etc - that is boring and just gross.

I loved this show when it first came out. I didn't have cable or hbo at the time, but friends told me about it and it was one of the first dvd box sets I ever purchased. It was a present to myself for graduating basic training. I never really liked Carrie, though I appreciated how dangerous it was to have a character like her as lead. But man, did she have some ultra cringe moments. Especially the Natasha scene, or when she invited Big up to Aiden's cabin season four. She was one of the first characters (besides Samantha and Miranda) to question the status quo about wanting to get married and have children. I cringed so hard at the transphobic jokes. Not back then, I didn't know any better because I was from some hick town that didn't have access to internet or know any openly lgbtq people. But watching it more and more, it just lets you down. Even for the 90s, you would've had Voguing and Madonna and the gay clubs, so I'm not sure why the writer's would be so homophobic and transphobic unless either it was subconscious or on purpose. Who knows. I also don't think the message of the show aged well, because while it preached you could be single and be happy, and only need yourself, only Samantha in the end was single. And the show was fatphobic as well. The only time they ever defended anyone fat was Miranda after she had the baby weight. When Samnatha put on ten pounds in the first movie, they made it seem like she was a size 20. I just wish the show had stuck to its guns and had at least two of the characters be happily single and not seen as desperate or pathetic. When I heard that the show was coming back without Samantha, my first thought was why? She was the antagonist that made them question their world views. So without her, are we just going to have a show about three settled upper/rich white women moaning about how they can't go out because of Covid? SJP has confirmed covid and social justice and politics are going to be part of the show. Given Cynthia Nixon's failed campaign, I cringe to think about what those views are going to be.

I subscribed off the strength of the art on your wall. Also, you’re informative. I’m in love.

The biphobia was surprisingly hurtful. Sure I hear homophobia all day but modern day online homophobia is usually really funny because of how outlandish and hysterical it is. But people still say the exact same thing about bi guys to this day... Feels like we haven't moved the needle on it the way we have with gay rep

For anyone craving one more episode of the original SATC, I recommend the movie Miami Rhapsody, which predated it. Also features a city in the name, very funny and witty, SJP is the lead and styled similarly, she narrates her family members’ sexual escapades, and Carla Gugino who plays her sister looks just like Charlotte and has a similar plot of dumping a WASP paragon for a dorky besuited fellow.

Like you, I have loved SATC a lot and it has meant a lot to me in my younger years - but it's time for new shows & new stories! Also, as someone who identifies as bi myself (but at the time when I watched that show had not come to terms with it at all) that scene always sat wrong with me. Same with how the women reacted when Samantha started to date that girl Maria. Now Maria wasn't the best partner for Samantha but they were not hung up on her behavior and their relationship dynamic rather they just didn't take the whole thing seriously. Hearing Laverne Cox's words make me realize how much better they could have done including LGBTQ+ people in New York beyond the white gay man. About reviving shows "because women like it"... I watch a lot of Asian dramas, in particular, Korean dramas. The majority of these shows have women as their main audience, they mainly run for one season only and there are rarely revivals (at least compared to Hollywood). If they can do it we can also deliver good NEW stories that become popular too!

Quality Video. I was nodding along through all of it. I was a big fan back in the early 2000, in fact the First time o ever binch watched a TV show was when i got season 1 on DVD for my 16th birthday (Christ, that's now almost 20 years ago...🧓). I absolutely agree that these shows schould be left to rest, their time is done. Surely there are talented writers out there with fresh, non-remake and especially more diverse ideas. Edit: omg you have a whole-ass video about my Cardigan Queen Charlotte York!!!❤️

The show definitely will not be the same without Samantha but I also don't want to give Samantha too much credit by calling her an "ally." In the biphobia clip, her comments were fetishizing. In the episode where she dates a Black man, she is again fetishizing. She is a white woman just as much as any of them, and she is at times even more problematic. She's entertaining though

I think Joan was a great friend. She allowed Lynn, Maya and Toni to take advantage of her so much and still did a lot for them.

I knew basically nothing about this show and watching that bisexuality conversation made me cringe inside out. And then the trans clips came along and I nearly threw my phone across the room... I didn't have much of an opinion on the show before but now I vehemently want it to remain dead and buried in the 2000s where it belongs.

Awesome video, 100% agree Steve would never cheat on Miranda. I still like the show but it's definitely a product of it's time and the writers behind it. We don't need a continuation, especially after the movies and I only bother to watch the first one.
