Persimmon is a fruit we’ve never had before - until now…and we love it. It’s so juicy and super tasty, the variety that we have is the fuyu which are apparently sweeter than the other varieties but don’t worry this video isn’t all about persimmons take a look back over the last 4-6 weeks of farm life and living in Portugal and start to plan to plant more food on the farm. The torrential rain that we had has made such a difference to our lake and the plant life which when you compare the brown looking ground to the green grass now it’s surprising that the change happened within about 2 weeks. We also experienced some pretty crazy storms and the sky gave us a show one evening with sheet lightning that I’ve never seen before. We got up close and personal to a European hornet and a friendly looking gecko and whilst we are on the topic of animals Trixie finally got her cone removed so she’s no longer a conehead and very happy about it, to celebrate she shows us her new trick! Speaking of tricks I do my first jump on my KTM 150 EXC 2024.
When the sun returned in mid September we got out our new 200w flexible solar panel and 600w portable power station by All Powers heading towards our goal of living a more sustainable and off grid lifestyle on our homestead, generating power from the sun to charge things we use like; camera batteries, phones and my laptop to edit this video. Hi guys! Although I had dióspiro ( the red soft fruit) before, only recently I found out I could do more with it: mousse and jam. Sam: your favourite apple variety is called "Bravo de Esmolfe". It is indeed yummy and smells great

Hey folks. Love seeing all the stuff you do on the farm. You got a freaking gold mine of land there.🤑 You can totally live off that damn farm. Get yourselves a cow for milk and cheese, some sheep, some pigs or boars 🐷(there are a ton around there). Some deer. Oh, and don't eat those green persimmons, they make your mouth feel "weird". Only eat them when they're freaking ripe, we say you don't eat the persimmon, you drink it. Keep strong. Oh, and those olive trees are gonna give us some damn good liters of the best damn olive oil in Portugal. Take it to the cooperative in Fundão and trade the olives for oil. Go get 'em! 🦾

Awh thanks so much! Yeah for sure we are starting to build our own little off grid/food paradise 😎☀️ we’ve been thinking about animals but also waiting for when we live on the farm so we can tend to them easier. Yeah we’ve heard that an unripe persimmon is disgusting 😅 they are super juicy and messy to eat they taste great though - honestly my new favourite fruit! We need to register at our local cooperativa and then I guess what we don’t need we’ll offer for sale 😎

Hi Jonny and Sam 😃 Another great video! Good to see Sam evolving her skills on her KTM 😃 In regards the farm, check if you really need to irrigate the olive trees that often (I believe, not being an expert, that olive trees won't need that much water) 😃 The view from your property stills amaze me 😍 Good to see that you are planning some changes in the farm! Jonny be careful with the wasps mate 😅 Can't wait to see the new projects! Abraço 😃

It rained, rained and then all hell broke loose, pretty much every October 2017 record was beaten this year. Two weather stations, Coruche and Pegões, registered a 19 day heatwave (between September 24 and October 12), around 55% of the stations registered heatwaves of more than 14 days (Fundão was one of them) and only 15% of the stations didn't register any heatwave during this period of time. Fortunately the rain is back and it looks like it's going to stay at least until the end of this month. 🙂 Portuguese lesson of the day: persimmon in Portuguese is "dióspiro". 😉

Mushrooms in Portugal in autumn are a true delicacy and are delicious, especially the "Miscaros". But, harvesting mushrooms in the wild is an activity that takes years to master. In Portugal there are edible mushrooms that are visually the same as highly poisonous mushrooms, they can destroy the liver in a few minutes. If you want to pick mushrooms in nature, ask an experienced local to accompany you. Be careful, it really is a matter of life and death. God job on the farm.😉

hello possible neighbor. What a lovely day. How exciting to discover new areas on your land. Did your friend Chris ever find a property? I will arrive Dec 7th to begin my property search. I cannot wait. Not exactly sure the area will explore the north and central. Very specific areas. Keep your eyes peeled for a nice property no smaller than 3 acres. Looking for walls, terraces, water, views, privacy, close to a village, a decent road and power. Although I will be off grid I want to hook up to mains water and electric because of the fire issue. I have seen having water could save our property and a life. You guys have done such an amazing job. Love the pond. Enjoy the cool down and rain and the planting if you do. What great views. So peaceful. Happy Fall. Cheers. hey Sam by the way great jumping skills both wheels off the ground. gina in upstate new york usa moving to portugal

Hey Gina, our friend Chris is due back here anytime soon to continue his search. I remember from a previous message you’re planning to spend a bit of time here which I think is smart, finding the right property takes some time. Yes having a good source of water from a well or borehole is a must in our opinion. Yes it’s beautifully peaceful here but also not too far from civilisation and neighbours 😃 hehe thanks!

I now see how much work you guys put in to do it LOL...Loving that option. So I can share my journey. Yes I don't want to be too far from a village maybe most a mile ish. The property is amazing. I know you must have said, but how many hectares do you have? Tractor advise....Used or new. Decide on every conceivable attachment you might ever need or use. Figure out how big (HP) you'll need to operate those items. Then go one size larger. Warning, once you get a tractor, you'll be fighting each other to use it. My neighbor (small farm) laughs at me because I love using his tractor. I help him with mowing, cutting and raking hay and baling. While the tractor seems fine to me, he always wishes he had bought a little bit more power. 35 years old and still works like a champ.
