We take a step back into the past to a month ago in the autumn on the farm, where we see Jonny topless it was so warm. You join us as we continue our olive harvest and start the process of making our own olive oil. But, we had a shockingly long wait on two occasions at the Coopertiva to drop off our olives so we looked into ways we could improve our experience and perhaps even improve the quality of our olive oil and we found this VEVOR Oil Press Machine: s.vevor.com/bfQJjQ If you're interested in purchasing one of these machines then use the discount code "VVSALE5" for 5% off. We'd like to do some further tests with the machine but we found it worked fantastically with nuts and actually Jonny used that hazelnut oil to fix all of the creaking hinges in our house haha!! I guess it's cheaper and more environmentally friendly than WD40.
As I mentioned in the video I'm also interested to make some natural products with the oil and the waste product especially soap as that's something we buy quite a lot of and not only would we like to live more sustainably but also cut our living costs down by trying to grow and harvest the things we need (or enjoy) ourselves. In this video we show off a couple of our portable power stations which we use on a regular (daily!) basis with solar panels, the beginning of our off grid (well, as off grid as possible) journey.
(If you're new here) Hi! We are Jonny and Sam a pair of petrolheads looking to create a more sustainable and happy life in Portugal. Join us as we travel and explore our new home country.

To get Extra Virgin you need to pick early. Actually the earlier the better as far as quality goes, preferably before the 1st rains. Your local mill looks like a nightmare!!! Think you could drive to Alferrarede and back and still be ahead on the clock. This is a new mill, you do not even have to clean them, then you pick up in December and the oil comes in lovely labeled bottles, so great to give as gifts. Those bigger olives look fantastic for eating :)

Hi, this is from the website. Question: CAN YOUR MACHINE EXTRACT OLIVE OIL? Answer This Question Answer: Yes, first remove the olive pit, and then break the olive meat into particles the size of soybeans and peanuts. Another important point is that the olive meat must be dry and not wet. Before pressing the oil, preheat the machine heater for about 8 minutes. When the raw materials are normal, they can be put into the hopper of the oil press to extract oil.

@@jonnyandsamofficial thank you. You should use bom ano novo, because ano ( year) is a masculine word. If it was a feminine word, it was ok, like in " boa noite( evening)", meaning good evening. Best of luck for you both and above all, stay and be happy!!!!!!

Sam, l think they are saying rain and storms haha, it went from 30deg Celsius, to maybe 21 haha, but it can say rain, and we miss it here, l think it will be muggy and humid haha. It's a mystery, l don't mind either way.

We missed the well known mushroom festival in Alcaide the following day because we were so tired from waiting in the coop queue, so it did kinda ruin us for a bit. We also don’t think we are quite doing it right so we’ll do some more tests. It was also very disappointing to get qualified as virgin rather than extra virgin at the coop after all of that hard work but we think it was because we mainly had one variety on show and they only test the top of the bucket. We’re still going to look into ways to improve the olive oil making process to not only improve the efficiency and quality of the oil but also our enjoyment from the comfort of our own home 😃 it worked super well for nuts though and as I mentioned in the description Jonny has been using that to fix creaky doors in the house 😅 Awh thanks so much merry Christmas 🎄 to you too and thanks for watching

Here's another story to enrich your knowledge about the portuguese olive harvest: in the old days, after the harvest, there were many olives left on the ground, so the farmers would let groups of young women come pick them up for themselves. It was called "rabisco" and that action (so to speak) was called "ir ao rabisco". Why only young women, you might ask? Because usually they would sell the "rabisco" olives to get some money for their layette. 🙂 Unfortunately, like many others, that's a tradition that has been abandoned.

Sam have you counted all olive trees??there must be more than 300, I guess. That's hard labour.I think your new olive press, just makes the paste and that paste needs to be centrifuged to expell the pure oil,I remember seeing this when I was young, the village lagar was close to home, but making olive oil, produces an awfull stinky smell that makes you almost puke.I can't believe the congestion from morning till after midnight hehehe makes you want to let the olives on the trees hehehe and go to the supermarket instead.Merry Christmas!!

I sure have, we have 156 trees. Some of them are really small or in some brambles though but we will get around to uncovering them 😃 yes I think you’re right we need to do a further step with the cold press paste. Oh this smell was quite nice I even put some of the paste stuff on my face, felt nice and soft afterwards 🙌 haha we will keep trying and learning

It might be good for nuts or seeds but definitely not for olives. There's more things involved in extracting oil from olives than what that machine does. If it was that easy to make olive oil, no one would take their olives to the "lagares", right?😉

We’ve checked with friends and locals and they all say they’re European even the old owner. These are so placid and not in anyway aggressive I spent approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour around that tree and they were barely even interested. We double checked against some photos online and we still think European. If they’re Asian we could get them removed by the GNR (or camara) as far as I’m aware but European not 🤦🏻‍♀️
