When I visited in 1975 there were guided tours, you couldn't wander about like this. The personal interaction with the Park Service guides was great. They knew so much and shared anecdotes with us. One thing I found interesting (from a teacher's perspective) was that guards' families who lived in those flats included children. They were ferried daily to school on the mainland and ferried back each afternoon. No yellow school buses for them. I wonder how often they missed school due to bad weather or rough conditions on the bay. I love historical places like this.

You could say that about all prisons even when there in the middle of nowhere. Especially if you got outside detail. Alot of people are tempted to run but most don't because even attempted escape is 5 years added to your sentence. Dosent mean much if you're serving life though.

Alcatraz was also an industrial factory. Prisoners were required to work in the various shops and they made things for use by the government. Things like desks, chairs, military uniforms, etc. The laundry not only was used for prisoners clothing but it prisoners washed laundry for the guards and for military personnel from nearby bases. Every job on Alcatraz other than the guards, health and administrative staff, was done by prisoners. They even had inmates who worked in the barber shop and gave shaves and haircuts to guards. Even today Federal prisoners make things for use by Federal government agencies

I went there in 1977 or 1978 and again in 1979. It was much less crowded with a guide to give you the history of Alcatraz. Everything was in much better condition. That guard tower was still on the top of building. Glad you got to see it. I got to take another tour. The warden’s house was still in decent shape. No tours of the house allowed. It was shortly after the Indians were removed from the island. They had no access to water ir the septic system. The island had deteriorated a lot during the occupation.

People who live in San Francisco talk down San Francisco. Crime is rampant. Entire blocks are vacant. Homeless encampments and drug addicts line the streets. Human feces and needles. Streets smell like urine. Downtown is destroyed. It’s better in the more residential areas like the sunset but those areas still have crime and homelessness and drug use amongst million dollar homes the size of a shoebox.

There is 2 movies you have to watch. Escape from Alcatraz. Its an older movie but good. Its based on the true story of a group of inmates that managed to escape the island and never to be seen again. Some say they made it to the mainland and others say they drowned and were swept out to sea. Its still an open case to this day. The 2nd movie you gotta watch that is action fiction is "The Rock" it has Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage in it. Its a good movie. When ever I see it on tv ill watch it.

Glad you guys got to see it! I'm down in LA and have only been to SF twice in my life. Alcatraz is definitely a trip. I still have my aluminum coffee cup that I bought in the gift shop, that was supposedly used by the prisoners and the guards alike. I often use it, but you easily burn your hands if you don't hold onto the handle and the coffee doesn't stay hot for too long haha. I get the feeling those "stunning views" were intentional to rub it in the inmates' faces what they were giving up (along with the massive warden's quarters). So much psychology going on there.

Archie is very cute and seems to be a happy baby for the most part. There are 2 different breeds of seagulls in CA. Thanks for showing this, I watched The Rock a short time ago and wondered if it was still open for tourists. Do they not have tours anymore or did you choose not to take the tour? You would have learned a lot about the place from the tour guide. When I was a teenager I remember reading a story from a man who lived there as a child. It was really interesting. I bet the warden didn't have to pay rent on his house.

So just to let you know, those birds that you saw with their chicks are Canadian Geese. You see them all throughout the US though definitely more of them in the Northern states year round. In my area (I'm in Southeastern PA) they've been staying here in much larger numbers year round to the point where it's become a problem. Especially right now when they're raising their goslings, I've gotten stuck in traffic because a large number of them decided to cross a major street which was not something you'd see a decade ago.

Alcatraz is one of those required trips when you visit the San Francisco Bay Area 🙂 and required field trips for kids in school in the Bay Area as well (I did this trip in high school) 🙂

$25 for the housing converted to 2024 value equivalent. Alcatraz operated from 1934 - 1963 so, 1930 would be about $445 1940 would be about $560 1950 would be about $325 1960 would be about $264 With dollar values adjusted for inflation at that time.

Now you can watch Escape from Alcatraz and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest or Birdman of Alcatraz. They will mean more to you after going there.

So glad the sun came out for yas! SF is an absolutely gorgeous city. I love how varied our coastlines are here in the USA. Each one is completely different than the other.

The water around alcatraz is full of bull sharks, so you really don't want to go swimming.

They told the prisoners that there were sharks in the water so they would think twice about an escape. The prisoners had no way of knowing that that was not true.
