What a great podcast. One of the best Ziz did but it's almost all because of how Mark was so generous. He gave us a chance to understand his views of the game and showed us how passionnate he his about the game which is very very refreshing in the gaming industry. What a great listening. I'm hoping it's going to be a regular thing, we need this podacast at the start of each league please!

I'm not going to lie. Affliction was the first league I actually went hard on this game and ended with around 6+ complete builds. I only played leagues before this for a little bit here and there and couldn't get into it. I'm still very much so a baby in PoE but it's been so much fun. I've never and I mean NEVER seen a development team soooo committed to their game and community and that alone makes me want to play. This team has captured my hearts and the community is one of the most welcoming, excusing some trolls and scammers, that I have ever experienced. Much love to you Zizaran, GGG, and you guys in the comments and community. Wish you guys the best of luck in this next league with all your drops!!! ❤️❤️❤️

After watching and hearing Mark talk about the thought process that is involved in creating new leagues and progressing the game for the better future, I'm happy to support the company though MTX bundle purchases and that is a refreshing feeling in modern day gaming

Seriously. MTX generally just get shit on, and for good reason. but POE and GGG is one of the few examples of it actually being a great model. I'm happy to support devs like this who even after 10 years continued to challenge themselves improving and iterating on the game. I'd rather just buy a supporter pack than most AAA games ill play for 10 hours and get bored of. It's a better use of my money. Ironic that GGG is owned by Tencent and yet seems to have near total autonomy to run their business and game any way they want and this is what we get. Maybe the American and European mega publishers should take notice.

I wish more developers had the confidence to have open conversations with their playerbase like this, it really opens our eyes to see the perspective of the developers themselves, it makes me think about things completely differently after seeing how mark sees it. Great vid!
@TheTripleJski
@TheTripleJski 2 ай бұрын
There's BIG obstacles to this. For one thing, many devs have lots to hide and really don't have the answers to the hard questions that GGG will stand and answer. That's often because the devs are on strings being pulled by greedy corporate execs. That's also often because they're not necessarily as talented or passionate (or both) as GGG has in their building. The OTHER big thing is...EVEN with the open, cordial, and transparent discourse GGG brings, they're human and make mistakes. When they do, people overreact, especially with the anonymity of the internet. Looking back at the reaction to the Archnemesis fiasco, people were understandably frustrated and annoyed with the way the game was at the time. HOWEVER, they took things WAY too far on social media (reddit in particular from what I understand). Unwarranted anger and threats (this is just wrong) toward GGG, Chris Wilson, and Bex (the community manager who was really fantastic at her job imo) just caused them to get off of social media for an extended period of time. Recently, we saw Helldivers 2 devs going back at players that were being antagonistic. These people are only human, and so it makes sense why some studios, EVEN those with the best intentions, do not subject their employees to the nonsensical overreactions of social media. There's no excuse for that kind of toxicity and threats of physical harm over a video game they're trying to make fun for us all. Hopefully we don't see history repeat itself with Jonathan and Mark being so gracious as to put themselves out there for the sake of their project and its fans with POE2.

As much as I like Mark, it's kinda strange hearing him say that they don't want to pushe the melee problem down the line again and again, when they have been pushing it down the line for several years now. Hint: Start with actually balancing melee on par with other archetypes in term of investment and power, and people would react positively. I agree; you can't have "tru melee" in a game this fast and dense, but you can balance it to be on par with other archetypes. We've had it before.

On the map affixes topic - if the main concern for implementation is the looks just give us the ability to prioritize the mods so that the item mods will be sorted based on the criteria, this way UI stays identical but you will just see the mods you're afraid of or are aiming for at the top or bottom of the mod list or however you'd choose to sort them.

Have to say, GGG's dedication to the playerbase is the reason why I love the game and still keep on supporting them every league. I'm baffled how all the "aaa" companies can't figure this simple function out... You NEVER want to get in a situation where it's the players vs the publisher. On the door thing, i understand his argument on the game feeling grounded and not having immersion breaking and internally inconsistent things in the game. For the annoying jail doors that you have to open a trillion times a map though. Why can we use our cataclysmic nuking skills to disintegrate monsters from existence that were on the other side of the door even, but the door is just chilling there. That to me is immersion breaking and inconsistent. Obviously if theres the occational big important door that i have to open myself thats not an issue.
@DKannji
@DKannji 2 ай бұрын
I think a good compromise would be in form of, if your character is next to a door, can't it be inferred that the character is opening the door on their own? Our characters can figure out how to breathe on their own, can't we assume that they know how to do other basic things? The thing many of these devs don't realize from the old days of ARPGs was that, in most cases, the doors were there to hide the inside of them with fog-of-war. But no doors in POE work like that. Also, most players are already teleporting and jumping past every grated door, so I would say, at least make those doors give way to the character when they approach.

I'm not sure of Neon will see this but with the Feared you could have a single "boss" health bar that has individual segments for each boss with their icon under each segment. So the one big bar across the screen but made up of smaller parts. Then after each one dies that segment can go away and make the others wider, or it can go to the far-right and be empty. I'm imagining like League of Legends health bars where 1K life has a defined line to break them up into 1K segments. I also paused right here to type this so if it's already discussed then ignore me lol

If Every game Dev embodied 1/2 the passion and knowledge that Neon does for gaming and how it's supposed to be, gaming would be the near perfect. GGG's got some really talented/passionate people working over there in New Zealand, cheers to you all! Ty for the video/interview Ziz, Neon, GGG! The fact that after the community overreactions (not frustration, but unwarranted nastiness from people on social media) of the past STILL doesn't stop people like Chris, Jonathan, and Mark from giving the players (and their customers...something so many game devs sorta ignore) their time and attention BETWEEN what is no doubt some long workdays is truly commendable. As long as this sort of thing continues, it's hard not to support a company that does things like this in today's climate of gaming. Also, there's a team of great talent working with them (Octavian, the other Mark who spoke at exilecon...the musical team, animators, artists, programmers) that are excellent at their jobs. Kudos to all those hard working individuals who give us such inspired entertainment. It's one reason why when something goes "wrong" like the automation controversy, or even bigger things like Archnemesis or potential issues with POE2 (which has a LOT of time to improve and gain polish) ; I just feel like these things are a drop in the bucket overall and trust that GGG will fix/improve upon what it is that is lacking while recognizing they're human and are allowed to make mistakes (even if those "mistakes" are just disagreements between them and their player base about in game philosophy). They've earned that respect and wiggle room in my opinion with all the great free content.

Here is a "realistic view" of doors within the game context. We are exiles who struggle through Wraeclast eventually evolving, finding powerful items, unlocking our true potential, fighting and killing the most dangerous creatures in Wraeclast, fake gods, and eventually true gods. There is no reason why all the tools in our arsenal can't at some point blow open a door in a dungeon without the need of pressing the door handle. Some doors like the heist ones are protected by strong magic and can't be blown up, (or you need so much damage that you prefer to use the skills of the rogues, at least until some point).

The training dummy would massively increase my creativity in building my character, not stifle it. The fact that I can't really observe incremental changes or directly compare large alterations just makes me throw my arms up in the air and say what's the point? It's like being in a room with 1,000 levers but the only way to see what any of them did was to step outside in the middle of a hectic chaotic warzone. I wish the focus wasn't on ziz using the word bug but emphasis was placed more on the rest of his phrasing. The ability to test if interactions are occurring, regardless if it's a bug or my misunderstanding of the mechanics, is the point to have a training dummy! The longer you've played and the more you know/understand the less impact this has but for new players especially it would be so helpful if they could just test an idea for a possible interaction and see it in real time in a controlled test environment. It's really not a big ask.

I would like the removal of PoB and addition of a training dummy myself. Less perfect builds all mathed out, more experimentations with real existing gear. I enjoyed the old build videos where the creator would still have some doubt about what is best in slot and talk about testing it in real maps.

Really made me want to play this league, the next league, next game, and get some supporter packs along the way.

I am very hardcore and demanding gamer and I am so happy that ggg exist in this world, it's almost a miracle that there are developers who genuinely want to make their game good for the gamers and gamers reciprocate with buying support packs. It's love!

my suggestion for the whole nearby discussion would be when you hover an item with an effect or aura that works within a range. have it show a circle around the player to indicate its range. that way it isnt the end all, be all if it says nearby or something else. since you can see the range anyway.

Yes, that death recap proposal would be a great improvement. We don't need perfection. The current league providing information about the mobs is already a huge improvement that will likely reduce the desire for a death recap.

Going to dump my idea on this here. I instantly pictured death recap in LoL when he was talking about it and imho that would be perfect. Here is the debuffs, and bar graph on dmg type. I don’t think mob or skill ever matters because I’m looking at where my defense it lacking.

The door health idea is interesting. The first time I realized I could smash through doors in Dead Cells was a pretty awesome moment and it's almost a mini game in itself. It'd probably be hard to pull off that similar feel in PoE tho

Mark is awesome. One thing I'd like to see in the future if bingo cards are on a podcast again, Can you bring up what the negative counter argument is to not doing it? I'm curious what the design thought process is behind it. I enjoy hearing about the technical nuances or unforseen implications of making the change. e.g. Larger Pickup Radius. What is the friction to implementing that? Love the podcast

Happy to hear scarabs being more plentiful rather than "go low, than too high". A lot of issues fixed with that change, and the Limit makes it quite intruiging to experiment. On the topic of doors: i do wish they would telepathicly open, since we dont exactly do any animation to open them in the first place. I dont see them being more realistic to me, due to having to click on them. Immersion wise, its no diffrent for me, whether I open it, standing 2 meters away, clicking it, IT HIGHLIGHTING (as doors IRL do) and then opening without a single motion of my body. Or whether it just opens by its own, because some goblin trapped in the door mechanism opens it for me. But ay, its his decision, im happy incursion got automatic doors, thats already a blessing. the proposed div card solution by Mark was quite good. I do like to just pick a card pool, and run my prefered layout. this also allows you to swap to another map, if say you get bored of your prefered map after a week. then you swap the div cards again, and just carry on with your new prefered map. i think the point that matters in this topic is: Choice. If people do wanna run just 1 map, this fixes it. if people do wanna run diffrent maps (at least occasionally) its fixed. If people wanna run random map every time, the scarab fixes it. great upcoming change, would love that! the maven vs eldritch topic, i too think it'd be nice to run maven AND either of the other big guys. But as mark said, for the time being, I am beyond happy to just have seperate atlas trees to swap between, when I get tired of one grind type

It is extremely refreshing to see this sort of attitude - I don't know if it was former leadership or they've just changed their minds on things, but you'd never have seen this sort of thoughtful and future-looking during the Archnemesis league.

2:27:00 maybe put smaller life bars on the edge of the screen when there are more than 3 bosses? Then this way even 8 bosses or more could fit on the side of the screen?

2:21:00 If we could get a timeline of recent damage taken by type it would be already top tier. Grouped by second probably? Just X damage from fire hit, Y damage from ignite, Z damage from phys hit, etc. As for the debuffs a list of debuffs you had at that timeline as well, start and finish of the debuff. No messing with monsters or who inflicted what. Just info on your own character. If that is possible it would solve 99.9% of issues with death recap

death recap could just have damage taken recently sorted by damage types, and debuffs as a bonus and I'd be good with it, having monsters on top would be perfect.

An Idea on the boss static health bar with multiple bosses, you could just have a combined total HP bar for all bosses present - you would get all of the same benefits and would avoid the issues of choosing which HP bars to show and/or swapping between them (You would want to keep the boss's individual HP bars above them of course). not necessarily the best option but would be a lot cleaner for things like maven invitations.

Note on the combat dummy: I love to experiment with builds from guides, but because of the lack of any target practice, I actually dont do that anymore. As I have to test in a map and waste time and resources on a modification that might not have been good for my build, dps wise. If I had a dummy I could test what my dps is and what change (item, skill point, etc) does actually increase-lower my damage. There could even be a dummy that damages you with a certain damage type in setable intervals (hit dmg, dot dmg etc). To test out how tanky you can be.
