Basically, if the joke works better with the other family members hearing him, then they hear him. But if not, they don't hear him. I remember one episode, where the family is trapped inside a bunker while burglar's ransack the house, Peter says that he didn't like the Godfather and that he didn't see the movie all the way through. Stewie outright says "How can you say you don't like it if you haven't even given it a chance?", to which Lois says that she agrees with Stewie.

Actually, I'm native American (Cherokee) and the only thing I've ever found offensive is the depiction of ALL tribes being murderous and therefore "okay to kill, we're the good guys" in old movies. It doesn't really offend me that much, just annoys me since so many older people grew up believing that due to those films and not actually studying history (those 60 & up).
