6:09 Your argument here is manipulative, Rey doesnt hate Luke because hes trying to teach her that the force is neither good or bad, she straight out hated on Luke because of what happened with Kylo Ren, and yet she doesnt hate on Kylo for all the bad, killing he has done she runs to him. Too many things that dont make sense in this movie. Like why does Yoda say that Rey possesses all she needs or something, claiming she has those books? Yet back in the OT he begged Luke not to go after Vader saying he wasnt ready and needed to complete his "Training". Explain that please do. So just cause Rey has a bunch of old Jedi books she has all she needs and is ready, yet shes very emotional, shes hot headed and as we eventually learn has Sith blood within her, she already demonstrated a sith ability by striking that FO transport and that was with just a small bolt of force lightning. But if you want to tell me that TROS doesnt matter here and that this video is exploring only TLJ. I'd have to tell you thats pretty damn ignorant because TLJ itself shoots down where TFA was taking things. What about the force vision and Rey appearing in the corridors of Bespin seeing events of the past that she wasnt even around in. Yes Yoda did say the force can show us glimpses of the past and future, so why is Rey seeing such things that she wasnt even part of? You cant just ignore the episode that came before because this is meant to be a "Sequel Trilogy", these episodes are meant to flow seemlessly telling one whole concluding part of a bigger story overall. If all you're doing is focusing on what you see in TLJ and why you think its now so great, trying to justify your reasons and tell us how TLJ is so good and right now because we now have TROS. Your video essay is weird why you've done it now after ep9 came out. This video should have been done like ages ago.

Look at the split it caused in the fanbase, look at the reactionary way inwhich episode 9 was then executed. You think TROS pleases most us TLJ haters!? Im laughing that episode 9 retconned most of whatever TLJ was trying to do, purely because TLJ did the same to ep7. Geez your video essay just really doesnt make sense, i really think you should do another, much longer essay on TLJ. What was the point in ep 8 being purely about lessons in failure!? And I can trust Rayan gets it, especially seeing how he treats fans and after his recent comments how everything he done in this movie was spur of the moment. This has become a common misconception, but is not at all as Lucas intended: "May through Force be with you". Obiwan and later on Luke says this. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. " Yoda in ESB. Now is Yoda good or evil? And so if the 'Force' is his ALLY, therefore it must also be 'good'. “It was the will of the Force, of that I have no doubt.” Qui-Gon in TPM. So when Qui-Gon says he believes Anakin is the 'chosen one' to 'bring balance' to the Force, to the Jedi Council this means one who will defeat the darkness to leave only light. That's clearly the WILL of the Force, to defeat evil and thus bring 'balance'. The Sith instead of obeying the 'Will of the Force', they try to bend it to suit their own selfish needs. Yet the 'Force' is there to maintain the needs of ALL living things in peaceful harmony. When the Sith warp the Force's will to suit their own, they bring about imbalance, and corruption. In short, evil. I’m pretty sure it was TLJ ending/answering every overarching plot point despite being the middle film in a trilogy that did that. Like there was no story to continue at all other than heroes must defeat the villains, no other setup. Hence you get episode 9

@@matthewtrujillo3309 There was plenty for them to do. @matthewtrujillo33093 жыл бұрын
@@immortalfrieza smh, there is literally no plot to continue, no real setup whatsoever. Why do you think TROS felt rushed? Because there’s no possible payoff for a finale since every overarching plot element from TFA was either answered or ignored in TLJ, that’s why the first half of TROS spent its whole time coming up with brand new plot elements in order to have some semblance of a prolonged narrative. TLJ is literally a film where the characters end up in the exact same position they were in at the beginning of the film: running from the first order (textbook wheel spinning). I’m sorry, but if people can criticize the logic, character development, plot holes, narrative consistency, even the damn choreography among other critiques, you by no means made the best movie possible
@immortalfrieza3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewtrujillo3309 Bull. Shit. There was plenty TLJ left off with that they could've and should've based the third movie off of. For example, the Resistance at the end of the movie is reduced down to a handful. The Resistance building themselves back up from that could've created enough plot for an entire trilogy or TV series just by itself, not to mention sufficient for one more movie. Instead, RoS just sends Resistance back to pre TLJ levels without even a handwave as to how they got from next to nothing to something that could stand toe to toe with the Big Bad's fleet. As for others, Rey was in position to begin training Force Sensitives and create a new, better version of the Jedi Order. Rey being a nobody means the potential for characters to actually matter goes up. Finn is now both devoted to the Resistance completely and has a love interest, both of which could've been explored. Poe evolved into an actual leader (the one part of TLJ they didn't get dead on) and next we get to see just how he leads. Kylo Ren is now the head of The First Order but has lost a great deal of respect, a civil war would be a perfect backdrop to the third movie. Luke's sacrifice inspires the galaxy down to the kids to rebel against The First Order... I could go on for quite a while. If anything TLJ left way TOO MUCH to work with to possibly be wrapped up in a single movie, not too little. All that potential ended up pissed away by retconning or ignoring everything TLJ did, for the sole purpose of trying to appease a microscopic minority of "fans" that never intended to like any of the Sequel Trilogy to begin with and hated it for no other reason than because they exist. And that's just what I, a random person on the internet came up with in 5 minutes. People whose actual JOB it is to do this? It should've been a cakewalk for them to come up with something worthwhile for the third movie. The issue is they didn't want to acknowlege TLJ EXISTED, not that it didn't set anything up. Anyone claiming otherwise is either just unjustifiably shitting on The Last Jedi and trying to justify the unjustifiable crap that Rise of Skywalker was or both.

@JainaSoloB3124 жыл бұрын
You stopped watching 30 minutes from the end. I'm sorry to say you missed the entire point of the film. Luke was WRONG Kylo was WRONG DJ was WRONG "Let the past die" is what Kylo believed, and he Thinks that he's making a new order but in reality he's only perpetuating the death and suffering that the Dark Side has always inflicted upon the galaxy. He thinks he's a new faction but he's just the Sith with different branding. DJ thinks that just because the Resistance and the First Order both get their weapons and ships from the same source, via the military industrial complex. And that's definitely an important problem, but he comes to the conclusion that the only way to win the game is not to play. "They blow you up today you'll blow them up tomorrow " "You're wrong." "Maybe." The point of DJ is that he is wrong, he thinks that the best thing to do is "live free, don't join" but he doesn't understand that his inaction in the face of evil is enabling evil. The only way to win against nazis is to actually fight them. Not necessarily violently, as Luke demonstrates later. But the Resistance was almost totally destroyed. The First Order would have subjugated the entire galaxy, and all because DJ thought that doing nothing was more moral. Luke wants the Jedi to die, but by the end he tells Kylo "I will not be The Last Jedi" because he realized that the failures of the Jedi don't mean they have nothing to offer. Luke exiled himself because he thought he had nothing to offer the galaxy but more failure. He learns from Yoda that his failures don't make him worthless, they actually add value to his teachings, just as Yoda's failures helped Luke. "The greatest teacher, failure is" and "We are what they grow beyond" is the message of the film. "If you strip away the myth and look at their deeds, the legacy of the jedi is failure" is what Luke tells Rey, but later he realizes that just because they failed doesn't mean they have no worth or nothing to learn from. Luke's final act was the perfect encapsulation of Jedi philosophy "A jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never attack." He sacrifices himself to inspire the galaxy, that's the most Jedi thing we've ever seen in SW, and Rey is confirmed to be a Jedi by the end of the film. The dark side is death, decay, pain, suffering, and selfishness. It is a necessary part of life, but it must not be allowed to win. The light side is life, restoration, love, compassion, and selflessness. The Jedi weren't perfect, but the Sith are legitimately evil. The message of TLJ is you Have to pick a side. Even when you think you haven't picked one, you have picked the side of whoever is already winning. Silence in the face of injustice is compliance, and that's how evil wins. Not just because bad people do bad things, but also because good people do nothing.
@EyeOfTheTiger7774 жыл бұрын
No, the Dark Side had a win, which is balancing things out in the broader context, because previously (in the Original Trilogy) it was the Light Side that won. The Empire was destroyed. The prequels also show us the Light Side becoming corrupt - the Sith were driven into exile and practically exterminated. The Jedi ruled supreme. Yet it was a corrupt, treacherous, totalitarian dystopia, because they wouldn't let the Trade Federation have their own independence outside of the Republic. The absolute rule of "good" is always a dystopia. Better have dark, grey, and light, than have just light, or just dark, or just grey. One side having total domination always turns to the dark and the system balances itself out through creative destruction. In short, you're speaking like a drone Jedi, indoctrinated, biased, acting out of fear. Afraid to burn your 'holy books', see yourself, and perceive the grander truth. As long as you cling to the light, out of fear of darkness, you will be giving rise to the dark, and its many evils that you mentioned. That's duality. It is a partial picture. Injustice creates martyrs. If you prevent it every time, no martyrs will be made, and no light side will be arising to stop the evil. It's paradoxical, but it's how it works. The Force is One. Everything is One. The endings also supports what I'm saying: Luke inspires the galaxy only by letting Kylo "strike him down" (figuratively in this case). Luke didn't go out there and didn't kill Kylo. He let Kylo win. He created a martyr, and millions of children became inspired. This is the whole point - to act with wisdom and insight, instead of the twitchy, moralizing 'instinct' to "do good." That is egoic and almost never ends well. Kylo, at least, overcame his ego for a moment. He saw that ruling on his own would be bad. He needed a partner from the Light Side to temper his worst impulses. Rey refused, because Rey hadn't failed. Ray wasn't aware of her shadow side, she hadn't achieved wisdom. Kylo was very aware of his shadow, having murdered his own father, he felt the pangs of remorse. Basically, Rey is narcissistic and unaware. Kylo is more sincere and mature in his self-reflection. He needs help and asks for it, but the novice Jedi doesn't get it. This is partly a problem of Disney in insisting to paint Rey as a perfect Mary Sue... She supposedly killed Chewie in ROS, but they didn't even let her have THAT failure. By keeping her pefect and mistake-free, she is kept stupid, shallow, arrogant and unwise. Rian should have directed Episode 9, or it should have been Duel of the Fates... Rise of Skywalker is such shallow bullshit. It basically crapped all over this... Amazing how they managed to make the least Star Wars movie in ROS, the gross stupidity of Disney/JJ.
@Rwhalt4 жыл бұрын
Both good replies, but the OP hit the nail on the head with the last 30 minutes bit. Heads up, long comment: I'm one of those who really connected with THE LAST JEDI from the start. But I can't explain it without saying what was happening in my personal life: My father had ALS and Christmas 2017, he was pretty much at the end stages of that horrible disease. To see a man who I'd looked up to, who made me the man I am today, reduced to a broken shell of a human-being, unable to walk, unable to talk, brought me to the absolute abyss of depression, our whole family really. Needless to say, we decided to take him, in a wheel-chair, to go see The Last Jedi (He'd seen every Star Wars film from the original back in '77). Seeing the heroic Luke Skywalker lose his faith and be shrouded in such darkness (maybe one of Mark Hamill's most brilliant on-screen performances)... boy could I relate to that. I still remember looking to my dad after the film, asking him what he thought. With his one good hand, he was able to smile and give a thumbs up. It the last time he ever saw a film in a move theatre. So you can imagine how disheartening it was to see the entire collective of the internet trash this film and say "This film killed my childhood" (all while my actual childhood literally died before my eyes with my father). And to be fair, I do agree with those criticisms. RedLetterMedia's review of the film is spot on. Years later when RISE OF SKYWALKER came out, it only reminded me how much LAST JEDI left them with nowhere to go. I just came to finally give up on Star Wars. I have got to say, this review put everything back in perspective for me. You did a great job reconnecting the themes of failure and the nature of good and evil. Big thumbs up from me! Well made.

I'd also disagree with the criticism about the ending. It left them with everywhere to go. The primary galactic conflict still exists, there's still a First Order and a Resistance, but now they're both helmed by our main characters. The war now becomes more personal for them than ever. I really wished I could enjoy it. I simply could not. I find its writing to be completely ineffective in the sense we end up in the exact same situation we were previously. Kylo Ren loses, which makes him an absolutely pointless villain. What is going to happen in the third movie? Lose again? Rey still absolutely destroys and has little to no flaws. Conquering every situation with little to no effort. I don't mind the way Luke was presented but I wished it was done better. For example, instead of trying to murder a sleeping kid. What if instead, it was his hope that became his downfall? That despite the visions he foresaw and the future he could see Ben succumbing to. Having hope and believing that Ben would defy and defeat such an alluring position as one day, Ben does kill his fellow students and takes a few with him. This would shatter Luke, not only would it explain his cynical and hermitage behavior but also help with his character provided from the original trilogy. It would have been a simple and effective change but instead, Luke just becomes like Vader? Something he adamantly denied in the original trilogy and a lesson he already learned. This to me simply is just broken and ineffective writing and only one example of this. You can absolutely have all the things that happened, all you required was a bit better writing to make it much more memorable and organic. I really wished I enjoyed it but I can understand those who enjoy the story. I simply blame it for exactly what would have happened with Rise of Skywalker. I hilariously joked to my friend and predicted much of the movie. Snoke is dead, and Disney is too cowardly to make Kylo the villain so I guarantee you Palpatine will be bad guy. That happened. Also, said that they would make it seem like Rey would turn to the dark side somehow but it wouldn't be enough and simply be rushed because it is the last movie. Did happen, and that there would be little to no stakes because this second movie was supposed to establish them. People say Rey hearing she is nobody is her big turn but this is also bad writing and I believe it to be objective. Rey, has had no reason to believe her parents were anyone. This can be blamed on the force awakens as it was Disney themselves who hyped: Who are these people related too? Luke was never thought to be related to anyone important until it happened. It was interesting because we didn't expect such a background. Here, why would Rey care? She only cared about finding them, I don't believe she placed any substantial belief that she thought them to be important. We were never shown this, and that is the problem with this trilogy overall. The things shown are hilariously bad, while interesting parts, like Rey escaping on Snoke's escape pod are surprisingly removed. I believe the second movie would have been better with Rey accepting the deal as a new start. It would have provided something different and more interesting from that part forward. Sadly, as we could clearly see, none of this was ever remotely planned. This was the fault of the Force Awakens and the Last Jedi as both movies seemed to be completely abandoned by their following film. Hooks are important to connect stories but only the most basic ones are provided here and it makes it a jumbled mess.

Finn and Poe actually have their own arc. Finn is on his own hero’s journey. Call to action, rejecting it and being selfish and eventually seeing what’s going on in the world and learning to join the team. That was the purpose of canto bight. Poe goes from hothead easy solutions without thinking about consequences to learning about responsibility and leadership. Those parts may seem boring if you’re looking from action POV, but they were character building. TLJ was much more character driven.

Finn is on his own heros journey... To be led stopped from any semblance of free will and controlled by Rose the entire movie. She stops him getting into the escape pod, she tells him what and what isn't worth it, she even ensures he can't even die how he wishes. Yes, such the hero. Poe is much the same way. He, with his childish insults actually gets something done in the beginning of the movie. The entire rest of the movie he's chastised for not following directions and taking initiative. Only to see the female admiral sacrifice even more, the whole last capital ship and only one with a hyperdrive, to essentially do the same thing as Poe did but if celebrated. And no, just because she takes out more ships doesn't make it better, as her sacrifice was much greater and no one got away due to it. Yes... Heroes.

@@VermonsteredRose is one of multiple influences on Finn. She's the true believer. His whole arc in TLJ is being tested and tempted. He rejects the call, reluctantly answers the call to help his friend, learns multiple perspectives on the conflict he's found himself in, and reaches apotheosis at the climax. Standard hero's journey. Poe has a juvenile view on leadership and taking risks. He thinks he knows more about what needs to be done and is unwilling to truly listen to anyone. He believes people who are more risk-averse to be cowards. When his plan fails, and in the end he sees that the person he was butting heads with was not a coward, but was willing to sacrifice when necessary, he learned a deeper meaning of leadership. Holdo didn't exist to make Poe look bad, she existed entirely as a mirror for Poe. If there is any complaint to be had about that character, it's that she was otherwise empty. She only existed to serve his arc. And that you can't see the difference between Poe making an unnecessary sacrifice of someone else's life when he had been told otherwise and someone making a sacrifice play when no other options were available says more about you and your inability to comprehend context than it says about the people who made the movie.

@@Allen.Christian What the heck are you talking about? Did you flip Rose's gender in your first paragraph to call her him the entire second half? Or are you flipping to Finn mid sentence? Rose and Finn literally fail every task they attempt sans Rose preventing Finn from doing a single thing of his free will when she shocks him when he wants to escape or stop him when he is taking out the ground laser. She prevents him from doing anything, everything else? They fail at. They don't get help. They get betrayed. They don't accomplish a single thing beneficial in the entire movie. A hero you say for either of them? Impossible when they didn't accomplish anything during the entire movie except not getting themselves killed. As for your Poe paragraph... Somehow you don't realize Poe's plan is the same as Holdo's. Poe literally took the already deployed fighter bomber wings to engage the destroyer and allow the fleet to escape and for everyone to escape the planet before the main gun fired on the base. Surprise! He was successful but wasn't allowed to finish the job of the ALREADY DEPLOYED WINGS because Holdo. Holdo created the problem of running. Then SURPRISE! She does the same thing (solo run except with the most valuable ship) to be allowed to finish the job leaving the 'fleet' to consist of escape shuttles.... Yay? That's leadership? To chastise the exact same action to even greater losses and with a worse result? As Holdo's action cost the last capital ship and now they're down to a few dozen people set to be slaughtered on the planet below. You're obviously not about results based leadership or action based leadership. The last paragraph makes no sense at all. Holdo cost the entire fleet and everyone's lives. Without intervention of Chewie, Rey and Luke, none of which Holdo knew about, Holdo's plan from the start is to run out of gas and die on Crait. Awesome! It's literally run away while in visual range and hide behind the only tree (planet) in the desert (space) thinking they can't see you. It's stupid to an extreme and if you can't see the folly is any of that you didn't see the movie I did or you find the dumbest things, genius moves. As it takes true incompetence to think Holdo's actions so far superior to Poe's even though she killed the entire fleet instead of a few fighters and bombers, most of which were killed following Holdo's orders to run away. 🤦

I'd love to have a conversations with people about the movie who actually have some decent argument for it. The types of people I'm seeing either enjoy it, don't care to talk about it, or are so set on proving that it's a crime against art and humanity that they pretend the villain's motive is the motive of the movie instead of what the wise guy from the previous movies coming back from the dead said to literally explain the message of the movie. The Last Jedi is not subtle.

This is a great video, but you're missing an INTEGRAL part of the whole thing. The message at the end is that Kylo is wrong. Sure we need to learn from the past and create something new. But we should still strive to do good. Luke said the force and light do not belong to the Jedi, but he didn't say there was no light. The point of Finn's arc was that he also was struggling with nihilism and the idea that not taking a side is the best path. But he realizes that's not true, there is still value to believing in something and fighting for it even if the world makes it hard sometimes and it's not as clear cut as we are told it is. That's why he says "you're wrong" to DJ when he's betrayed at the end. Luke has a similar realization. His nihilism is challenged by Yoda. Yes, we must accept the failure of the Jedi and the futility of its struggle against the sith. But that doesn't mean we stop fighting. Instead, we learn from the past, and create something new. "The war is just beginning, the rebellion is reborn, and I will not be the Last Jedi." Kylo and DJ were VILLAINS. They were almost right, but ultimately wrong because they were misguided. DJ used his nihilism as an excuse to look out for only himself since nobody and no side is any more valid than him and his interests. Kylo used his nihilism as an excuse to try and seize power for himself because neither side is any more right than the other. Their failing is that you can recognize the flaws in previous ways of doing things and in certain causes without losing the drive to be good and fight for a cause. Kylo saw the failures of the Jedi and the Sith and used it to justify seizing power. Rey and Luke saw the same failures, but chose to learn from them and move forward to create a way of being a Jedi that is better.

I disagree with your take. I loved the Last Jedi, but I don’t think it’s about not taking sides. I don’t think DJ should be the character you take the the film’s thesis statement from. Mainly cause DJ does choose a side. He ends up taking money from the First Order just as those weapons manufacturers he was so quick to criticize took money from the First Order. It shows that apathy towards a fight between good and evil often ends up only benefitting evil. He’s not framed as a character the audience should like. It’s because of him that Finn and Rose are nearly executed. The First Order are still framed as the clear villains. It’s a fascist military force that abducts children, slaughters civilians, and genocides entire planets. There’s no nuance here. The Resistance aren’t just as bad cause they think it’s a good idea to fight the guys into genocide. Thus the film ends on a boy with a Rebel Symbol ring, sure to grow up to join the fight for good cause he knows those people such as Finn, Rose, and Luke Skywalker are truly the people looking out for him and not the First Order. It’s a very anti-centist movie.

I liked this video a lot, but alongside your point about not pulling the film's thesis from DJ, I also think it's wrong to pull the film's thesis from Kylo: "Let the past die" is not the point. Learning from the past and building off the past is the point. (That's why, for example, the Jedi texts didn't actually burn -- they were taken by Rey.) The idea that Kylo wanted to forge a new, better path...I think this also misses a key detail. When he makes that list of things that need to die, "Jedi, Sith, Rebels," etc., he does NOT list the First Order. He doesn't want the First Order -- HIS claim to power and authority -- to die. In this sense, he's actually being ignorant/inconsistent; he's unwilling to personally do that which he's telling Rey to do.

It’s like its predecessor a jumbled-up soft reboot which manages to be completely stagnant. Plot A is a space chase because hyperspace is not an option. It detours over a civic planet where our party is betrayed by someone they just met, but trusted. Alright. There is also a bit where walkers assault a base. Sounds familiar? Plot B is about the force-novice to meet a grand Jedi Master of legend, who turns out to be a disappointment. He’s a recluse who refuses to teach, but a voice from the past changes his mind. We see him doing very ordinary things from cooking swamp soup to milking and fishing, and by the end he does one last impressive thing. Also gives the force explanation. Sounds familiar, too? The central twist is where the evil enforcer tells the force novice something unexpected about her parents. How original. The only problem is that it has literally no consequences and changes nothing this time. It’s entirely pointless. It’s also all the frigging same structure. Then there is a bit that is an exact copy of the throne room finale, also overtly made to feel familiar, as if to wink to the audience. Even the taunting with how the rebellion is gunned down outside is there. This is done to pull the rug by killing the big bad a film too early and relies on the meta, of knowing about these films and playing with it. Takes you right out of the non-existing story. There are some more massive problems, aside of being another bland soft reboot. 1) the “find Luke” plot wasted the first film for basically nothing. The whole payoff of hours of story and a dubious storyline is for Luke to stall the First Order for whole impressive five minutes. This is purest stagnation, because the film already started with them backed in a corner. The whole timing also bugged me. 2) Everyone was beaming around just so as the plot needed. They could go to Canto Bite in under an hour or four, and back, landing, prison and all and then manage to get into the Crait base - twice, just when the gate closed. You can only push it so far. JJ Abrams effed it up before and afterwards, too. It’s a type of problem that destroyed a good part of the star wars appeal, making the universe feel barren and small, since there was also near zero setting. Canto Bite was obviously added to have a theme for Disney’s park casinos. 3) There was not only no universe, no setting, nothing interesting in this era. Our heroes didn’t have a single adventure this far. Like none. No friendship, nothing. Making it worse, appealing to China led to the obvious introduction of a dilligent, principled, chinese worker hero character with a bolted on love story. I can’t buy it. It’s all very cynical and, no offense, made for people without taste and sense. And easily duped by marketing people. You can‘t tell me Rose was added out of genuine interest for that character. 4) Killing Snoke itself was fine. This was for a moment interesting to me. But the big huge massive giant problem was becoming clear some time later: Snoke was the big bad, and both Kylo Ren and Hux were portrayed as incompetent and incapable. Rey handsomely stood her ground on the first encounter, and yes Kylo was wounded, but if that worked before, why not again? You can argue it away as much as you want, concoct elaborate reasons why it doesn’t count, but your brain noticed it - he’s a loser. A non-threat push over who is mocked in the same film by his master. Rey on the other hand is clearly superior, won everything and had no apparent difficulties at any time. There is no threat. Also, Stormtroopers are by now entirely reduced to comic slapstick cannonfodder. I held onto an interesting direction perhaps coming out of the arms/weapons manufacturing angle shown by DJ, but when I heard they make just one film and no Star Wars X I knew that’s not enough, since literally nothing was build up thus far. Massive fail, and the damage to Disney’s brand can’t be overstated.

I really enjoyed it as well, it was my favorite of the sequel trilogy. I found it interesting to see how the leading men - Luke and Poe - are failures in what they do and what they don't do, and how their actions catastrophically impact those around them. And them realizing that, and taking action to become better, was very nice to see, because you don't see men in Western media being portrayed like that. I think that showed the strength of people in terms of their spirit. I loved this film, not because it was meant to give us a Timothy Zahn novel on film, but because it made me actually feel the emotions of the characters: Rey’s confusion and frustration at Luke; Finn’s moral quandary over running away (being neutral) and standing for something; Poe’s cavalier attitude to fighting verses leading. And under all this is the force, binding this universe, waiting for the characters to choose their paths. A brave, challenging film, which I hope we can grow to love like the prequels.

blue_pearl_22 I really liked it the first time watching it but after watching it three more times I can’t get past the flaws. the purple haired lady’s arc is stupid because if she had told anyone her actually genius plan, the tension of the whole movie goes away. The scenes with Rey and Kylo ren are pretty good and Luke’s scenes are good. They then kill off the main villain which creates a huge flaw in the next movie because there is no main villain due to kylo ren being conflicted between the light and dark and it’s basically guaranteed that he would go to the light side. The throne room scene is also terribly choreographed and the more you watch it, the worse it gets. The guards do these stupid spins and it seems like they are never fully trying to kill Rey or kylo ren

George Lucas has often spoke about “The Hero’s Journey” by Joseph Campbell. “A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.” Each of the major characters goes through their own moral journey, and comes out of it the person the were meant to be. The most obvious journey was Finn, who went from looking for ways to run from the First Order to wanting to take on the entire First Order alone. Poe went from being a hotshot pilot with a cocky attitude to a team leader. Rey went from being a frightened young woman to someone who was more accepting of her role in the universe. Luke went from being a hermit to accepting his final destiny of becoming The Legend that people believed him to be. He took on the entire First Order with a laser sword, and WON.

Finn goes through the same arc in TFA; rehash in TLJ doesn't make it any more interesting. Poe is suddenly made cocky and arrogant after displaying none of those traits in TFA simply so he can be knocked down pegs. He was shown to be knowledgeable, competent, and a capable leader in TFA within the structure the Resistance used. Rey went from an inexplicably powerful woman who had her place in the world to an inexplicably powerful woman who found simply a different place in the world. Sure, Luke has an arc, but we are missing what got him to the beginning of that arc from where we left him two films ago. That's a huge narrative issue, and the only way to explain it is by writing a lot of extra story for Rian. That doesn't make Rian's story good.

The most hilarious thing about views like this is they fail to consider the outcome for all this growing toward "the person the were meant to be." Loss of the entire fleet, death of 95%+ of the Rebellion. Luke is dead and didn't do jack squat with the lightsaber (laser sword, just like he said it would do on the island)... For all the lessons Poe, Luke, Rey and whoever else learned it resulted in them failing miserably, killing hundreds, nearly ends them all except for Rey's intervention in saving them from their becoming the failures they're trying to become. That's lesson learned by these TLJ fans? The idea of somehow you win and grow by leading yourself toward your own demise faster and more decisively? Great lesson.

I continue to think that rewatching the series, and then the last jedi really does make it clearer. The jedis of the prequels were their own downfall, and so Luke has to realize he can't just try to remake the jedi. When he does, he fails. Also I just liked Luke in Yoda's role for the new gen, a hermit who has lots to teach but isn't always clear. But it took me a long time to come to terms with the failures in Poe, Finn and Rose as a part of the story. They all have to learn hard things.

Thanks for this. It’s what I’ve been trying to say in defense of This movie, you explained it perfectly. I’d also add that as a woman, I saw another additional thing in Rey’s arc. She had to realize that we can’t always count on father figures or romantic interests to fix things. Sometimes a girl has to realize it’s our job to fix a problem. I think the scene where she realizes this is when she has to save them by lifting the rocks. She says, “lifting rocks” but she means “oh I see it’s me who has to solve this”

Excellent analysis, but as you say so well, unfortunately the side plots of the movie are what muddled it down in the end. If you made a cut of only Luke/Rey/Kylo, it is a far better movie. I personnally didn't like TFA because it was basically New Hope revamped with Empire/Resistance yet again, and found myself liking TLJ themes better while still hating parts of it (like the treatment of Finn, stuck in a boring side quest). I liked the force bonds, i liked Luke relationship To the force, I like being rid of cliché bad guy Snoke and i liked Rey being nobody. And then TROS shat on all of it and squandered everything TLJ tried to make evolve To revert To a RPG plot with once again Good vs Bad. Eurgh. But yeah: great video
@coxfire4 жыл бұрын
@@VickyToria136 it is really true, and i think TROS furthers what you are saying here because JJ reverted to Finn being mainly all about Rey (despite his story with Jannah). The fact also that he could have brought nuance to how people viewed regular stormroopers was squandered too.
@immortalfrieza4 жыл бұрын
@@VickyToria136 Finn at least has a purpose throughout TFA, even if ultimately they could have done everything without him. Rise of Skywalker though? They didn't even PRETEND to give that guy something to do. Even going with the rebellious stormtroopers to ride some horses doesn't do a thing to contribute to the actual battle, it's Lando, Poe, and Rey's efforts that actually bring them to victory. And let's not kid ourselves, Finn was crushing hard on Rey and was going to say "I love you" when they were sinking into the quicksand, regardless of what JJ and DIsney claimed.
@atomictire5763 жыл бұрын
It is the side plots and the whole plot of the sequels as a whole that ruins it
@zenceteri20433 жыл бұрын
While I agree that a lot Finn's potential was basically squandered from the beginning, TLJ also couldn't be bothered to really expand on his character. And I can't agree that he had absolutely no purpose or development in TFA. His arc was basically to go from someone who only thinks about himself to someone who actually cares about other people i.e. Rey and to a lesser extent Poe. That's the kind of arc that has filled whole movies before, although I wouldn't argue that it couldn't have been executed better. However, that development then became pointless when he spent the whole next movie with NEITHER of the characters he had developed a relationship with and instead was shipped off with a completely different character to have a forced romance with (if you even wanna call it that). And sure, "caring about someone else" might not be enough of a concept or purpose for a space epic like Star Wars (although caring about someone is basically the theme the whole franchise is built upon but oh well) but there were still two more movies where Finn could've developed away from Rey and become more important to the central plot once he had been taken into the folds of the Resistance, but instead the opposite happened. And not only did the subsequent films not give him more of a purpose, they also took away the one thing he had. And him caring so much about Rey starts to make much more sense when you realize that he was actually supposed to be Rey's love interest. That this had been the original plan has just recently been confirmed by the guy who wrote the TFA novelization (but was also already pretty obvious to everyone with eyes tbh). And the reason that romance then never went anywhere after TFA was either simply racism, because we can't have a black man and a white woman be the central romance of a Star Wars movie, or because it just didn't fit with Rian Johnson's little Reylo fantasy. Or both. So while, yeah, Finn's story arc in TFA was kind of thin but had potential to be expanded upon, he was then suddenly left with nothing in TLJ. And instead of at least coming up with something new for Finn to do, Rian Johnson just made him basically retread his arc from TFA. And I can already hear people typing to argue that in TFA he only learned to care about Rey and in TLJ he learned to care about the Resistance as a whole…(and that slavery is bad or whatever because that was apparently something he - basically a former slave of the First Order himself - had to learn.) And yeah, sure, whatever, but that didn't HAVE to be what his story in TLJ had to be about. He could've also woken up from his coma, realized that the Resistance cared enough about him to save him so maybe sticking around wouldn't be so bad, maybe he could've struggled a little with finding his place in the Resistance and then he basically could've done ANYTHING. The sky's the limit. You have a former Stormtrooper who defected and joined the other side, it shouldn't be hard to come up with a compelling story for a character like that. Instead Rian Johnson just couldn't be bothered to come up with anything interesting. His joke about him considering just leaving Finn in the coma for the whole movie is pretty telling of how much he cares about the character. Finn didn't fit into the Reylo show so he had to be sent on a pointless side quest because Rian couldn't just write him out completely. And then he couldn't even go on that side quest with the only other character he had some kind of relationship with because, by his own admission, Rian Johnson wasn't capable of writing them in a way where their dialog wouldn't be interchangable. Even though Finn and Poe are very different characters from each other so really, it shouldn't be that difficult. Or maybe he thought it wouldn't make sense that hot shot pilot manly man Poe Dameron would care about abused space horses or whatever, so he needed to get a woman in there. And don't get me wrong, I like Rose as a character, I just don't understand why Finn had to be paired with a different woman in every movie only for none of that to go anywhere. So yeah TLJ might be an okay movie on it's own with a cute theme but ultimately it just didn't care about what came before it (or what would come after it) and instead of writing to serve the established characters it just tried to somehow fit the characters in the narrative it wanted to tell, even if it meant basically completely excluding certain characters from the central narrative. (Sorry for replying half a year later but i'd never actually seen anyone argue that TLJ treated Finn better than TFA, something i think John Boyega would also disagree with, so i needed to get this off my chest)

After 40 years of the original ones, TLJ was the only movie who actually tried to bring something new. Yes, there are subplots that don't add like Finn's arc, but there are things like the general idea of Luke - a untrained jedi understanding the hipocrysis of the jedi in the past, just like ahsoka - being really tired with all of this, and Kylo killing Snowke to BECOME THE MAJOR VILLAIN (no, we don't need another Anakin/Palpatine relation all over again), and MAINLY: the concept that FORCE IS NOT HEREDITARY!!! I hope Rian still get that new trilogy
@espo221b Жыл бұрын
The point of the movie is Luke was wrong about the jedi. Rey takes the ancient jedi texts and will continue learning the same way every other jedi did. Kylo Ren is the worst, most inconsistent character in star wars. The force not being hereditary has always been a thing. Making Rey unconnected to the larger story just makes the larger story less interesting. Hopefully, Rian Johnson never comes near star wars again.

As a non-fan I can tell you The Last Jedi is the only film in the series where I had the slightest interest in what was happening. Every other film in the series feels like it's just going through the motions of "defeat the bad guy" but TLJ felt like it had some deeper themes it was trying to explore. Does it succeed in everything it tries to do? Not at all, but I'd rather a film try new things and fall flat on some of them than rehash the same thing for the eighth time.

the thing is the film's plot is so illogical/messy that it outweighs the importance of those very themes that it falls flat on anyway. So, not only did you not make a good film, but you also completely upended an established story in part 8 of 9. Whether you care about that or not, thats not good storytelling. I think thats why TLJ is bad, poor execution of the story, but people look past that to only see those new ideas/themes.

I loved this film since day one. If you don’t like it, I understand and support it 100%, so long as it doesn’t have any dumbass reason like “Luke was mean and he drank green milk!” While not perfect, I always found The Last Jedi to be the most wondrous and grand Star Wars film I’ve seen. It also took a lot of chances with its characters and put them in situations we felt uncomfortable in. I love the fact that Rian Johnson had the balls to challenge our perception of Star Wars and its characters as a whole. The film also brought back the mystical aspect of the Force that George Lucas had abandoned over the years. It was no longer just a superpower. It is now a neutral energy that binds the universe together, once again. It brought back the wonder and mystery Star Wars had lacked for decades. Fans can say what the want about it, but the one thing The Last Jedi kept sacred about Star Wars is Luke Skywalker and what he leaves behind.

An insightful video. While I do acknowledge some issues with Last Jedi, I liked it from the first time I saw it. The epiphany you described was the very theme I absorbed upon the first viewing - failure is the greatest teacher. I often criticize the new trilogy in general, but Johnson had nothing to do with that. His film felt incongruent with 7 and 9, but it was the only one that tried to tell a story in a way that hadn't been told before. I also really enjoyed your use of the score in the video - many KZbinrs fail to utilize music properly, and they miss a crucial tool at their disposal. Well made.

I love the film and I'm glad you came to appreciate it more. I took away something different from my viewings, however. DJ and Rose are Finn's main influences throughout the film but DJ is his bad influence. DJ challenges Finn's belief in the Resistance but he chooses to stand by them despite their failings. Finn deliberately calls him wrong and chooses his side with the Resistance because he learns to be a part of a cause bigger than simply himself and his new friend (Rey). Luke living as a hermit in the beginning of the film is inherently wrong and the setup for his arc, but the outcome of his arc and what he learns is that the Jedi ARE valuable, failures and all. "I will not be the last Jedi." The film isn't so much about the ambiguity of good and evil as it is about accepting your failings and learning from them rather than allowing them to control you. Luke and Kylo represent this clearly. Where Luke learns, Kylo does not. Kylo's desire to kill the past is the antithesis of the lessons the film is trying to convey and this is why he gives in to Luke's distraction and fails to finish the Resistance. Luke's sacrifice brings hope to the galaxy and ignites their desire to choose the side of good as seen with the children inspired by his actions in the final scene.

It's merely a meh for me. On re-watches it gets worse and worse. I feel like the only reason why the movie resonated with a lot of people is because of how JJ constructed the story around a soft-reboot of A New Hope. Using the bones of that story got him a decent starting point. Then they had Lawrence Kasdan help write the script. Finn being an ex-trooper was Kasdan's idea (probably anything original came from him). I also think Kasdan's knowledge and experience of writing past Star Wars films really helped make it feel like we were hanging out with an old friend again. Except it wasn't, it was more like Loki disguising himself as a Star Wars movie for Disney. If you scratch below the surface of this movie, there is only one layer and it's a potato. TFA imitates well, but misses some important beats and doesn't have the heart and soul of the original - And that is why it fails for me. Except Adam Driver as Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. That man is the best part of the entire sequel trilogy.

But actually the same happened to me too! I remember watching the Last Jedi in the cinema and being kind of bored. When the trailer for the rise of skywalker came out, my friends and I decided to do a Star Wars marathon and even though we were all quite reluctant to watch The Last Jedi, every single one of us changed their mind at the end. @richardwelschiii96314 жыл бұрын
Hey man, great essay! As a TLJ advocate, I'd love to challenge you to go even one step further. The Key Master Hacker guy is actually kind of brilliant. With what much of Johnson does, he shows us something played out to its extreme. We understand from the Luke/Rey/Kylo story arch that the force is neutral in many ways, seeking balance in itself. Benicio del Toros character embodies that. He doesnt choose sides. He understands how the system works. But what that ultimately leads to is him turning in the good guys for money and safety. So we see from him that not choosing is often as detrimental to the state of the galaxy as doing evil. For all he knew, he was helping end the rebellion or resistance or whatever they're calling it now. In the end, we have to first recognize that the two sides are often two sides of the same coin, and then we have to follow our gut/conscience/or morals or wtvr u wanna call it anyway. Because in the end, choosing to do something, like Luke finally did, is how people we love are saved.

Luke's downfall is interesting to examine from the point of view of Poe's arc. The whole point of that arc was that saving what we love is more important than destroying what we hate. As Luke went to Ben's room in the Jedi temple, he wanted to destroy the darkness that his nephew could bring, instead of saving him and protecting him from a path of evil. And we all know that massively backfired.

So... you flip Luke's entire character core to what makes him Luke on it's head because Luke sees a bit of conflict inside of Kylo. Probably a bit lighter than what he saw in Vader yet not only gives up on Kylo but tries to murder him in cold blood while he sleeps all because of less than 60 seconds of perceived feeling from him? Makes sense that he would try and murder Kylo but save and sacrifice everything for a darker Vader right? Even after he is successful and does save Vader's humanity... Makes sense to try and shoehorn Rose's final message of saving the ones we love is the way forward even though their beloved friends are blown up in the background of the same shot. Conflicting messages abound.

There's a BIG difference becoming an advocate for good w/o violence and running away and giving up on everything hoping to die. Again, showing that this flip to you isn't all that important and being told he's a crabby, grumpy old man who's done with life is good enough for you as a starting point even if it's a direct negative to the Luke you've known for the entire OT. Great idea to turn him away from the Force but terrible execution as the entire Canto Bight sequence could of been deleted and focused on the numerous event(s) required to flip the most established character in the series.

I can't disagree with you more - despite being someone who loved TFA from the beginning. You're quoting the villains (DJ on not taking sides and Kylo Ren on letting the past die) when the message of The Last Jedi, like so many films, is the literal opposite of what the villains want. The villains in a well written film are meant to be seductive in their philosophy - to do less is to set up a straw man. But DJ's "not taking sides" involves his selling out The Resistance to the First Order when it becomes expedient. Luke's not taking sides involves him living like a self-loathing and slightly repellant hermit (and in withdrawing into being a hermit he's following in the footsteps of the only two other Jedi he has ever known - Obi Wan and Yoda, and he's also a farmer like his aunt and uncle, living in the middle of nowhere and drinking green rather than blue milk). The film presents "Don't take sides" as a seductive position before turning round and saying "No, you should take sides - that's the best case and here's what it actually does" in the final third. A much more Star-Wars-y approach. It's not a coincidence that The Last Jedi is closely modelled on Empire Strikes Back - and Empire was extremely controversial when it came out.
