After playing with jelly gouache I decided I wanted to try professional traditional gouache (all I had was acrylic gouache) and I just ordered the winter set yesterday! It will be my first set of gouache, I popped out to Blick to order the coral demo the spring set too as well as white, black, warm red, warm and cool yellow, light and dark greens, and a darker purple. I'm hoping I'll have all I need to mix any colors I need!

So glad to hear you're trying out these paints! They feel very similar to jelly gouache so hopefully you're able to transition to them smoothly! I definitely think you have the entire color range at your fingertips now! And thankfully these paints go a long way! I hope you've enjoyed using them!

Wow I’m in awe. I’m a complete beginner and have this set and so far all I’ve done is admire the set lol as I haven’t a clue what to do with it lol 😂

Very nice video! I also liked the music that you chose. I have the same set and I think it works well in combination with the brighter colors in the spring set. The winter set has a lot of more transparent colors, so I wasn't surprised that you struggled with the opacity a bit. But I never noticed that it is missing a yellow until you mentioned it! Great painting and don't feel bad about liking to paint trains! I'm subjecting my viewers to lots of Star Wars paintings... :D We simply like what we like, and I think we should also paint what we enjoy painting. Btw, which paper did you use? The texture is super interesting.

Aww thank you so much! I'm glad this older video is getting a bit of love 😁 Aaahh I have my swatches out and I see what you mean! I need to try mixing these two sets together because I can see really beautiful color palettes in there! I didn't even realize they were transparent until you mentioned it. It's so weird because the spring set feels more opaque to me even though it's mostly pastels. I can't believe there's no yellow! The closest is that russet green lol Aww thanks! I think not being able to go to Japan for a couple years made me really hungry for some cute train paintings. Star Wars paintings sound so cool though! Are you painting scenes or some of the characters?? 😄 It's my favorite paper! I used the Strathmore 400 Series 6x12in 300gsm Cold Press Watercolor Paper. I can't tell if it was a manufacturing error or what but this cold press paper has barely any texture that it feels almost like hot press to me! I love how it feels to paint on so I stocked up on as many sizes as I could. Unfortunately anything bigger than 11x15in had the normal cold press texture you'd expect, so just try to get something in that size or smaller! Hopefully it wasn't an error and they just print their smaller sizes in this texture!

@@briannacasiniart I like that you stuck with the limited palette of the winter set and I think you made the best out of the lack of yellow. When I tried out the spring set for a painting, I realized that it doesn't really have a shadow or dark color. There were some smaller sketches that looked fine with just the limited palette of the spring set, but I ended up using some of the browns from the winter set in order to complete the landscape painting. Think I used both sets in this painting if you are interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooK1eJuOmb-Zras I mostly paint the characters. I've started to swatch new paper by painting BB8 with certain watercolor techniques that I use the most and it's super helpful to put all of them side by side and see which papers allow more lifting, etc. So my latest video had 2 BB8 illustrations in it. xD Thanks for going into so much detail about the paper! It's a bit tricky to get Strathmore here in Germany, but I will keep my eyes peeled. :)

Thank you! Gouache is such a fun medium to work with, I originally started out with the Miya Himi jelly gouache 18 color set and used that exclusively for 2 years. It's a very good (and cheap!) introductory set since it'll let you experiment without the worry of running out of paint. I still have my first set and only ran out of the white. You end up using more paint to cover areas compared to the higher quality paints, but you get so much it's not much of an issue. If you want to go for a more professional gouache, I've really enjoyed Holbein. My friend gave me her old set of the 5 primaries and honestly the layering felt so similar to the Himi gouache (which made it easy to transition to Holbein), and the colors didn't muddy as quickly either. I think the primaries are great if you're just starting out and want general feel of what the medium can do, it's about the same price as the Himi 18 color set so you could go either way. And then if you want to grab a bit more paint, the Holbein 12 color set thankfully only repeats the primary white from the 5 color set. These Irodori sets seem to be curated to mimic traditional Japanese colors, and for me they behave the same as the other artist colors so if they're expensive in your area I would pass on them for the normal Holbein Artist Gouache. My favorite right now though is the Spring set, the pastels are just too pretty 🥰🥰 Whichever ones you get just make sure you double check the type of gouache! Artist gouache will reactivate like watercolor, while Acryla gouache won't (just like regular acrylic paint) Hope this helps!!
