I find making art so soothing and therapeutic so I always try to encourage people to make some art :) I sometimes have to step away from art when work gets too busy but I'm always itching to get back into it. Thank you for sharing this lovely video. It is always so helpful to see how the colors paint out and mix with white. These sets are now readily available on Amazon and if you are in the US, Blick has individual tubes available as well as the sets.

I'm glad you liked it! I've noticed with gouache it can be hard to tell how the color will react to white if just going by what comes straight out of the tube! Great to know I can grab my favorite colors individually from Blick! I've only noticed them on Amazon as full sets but when I just need to restock on a few colors I'll be sure to keep Blick in mind :)

I have 1 stray tube of the pale patina irodori watercolor that someone gave me, it is one of my favorite colors of all time. I cherish it and use it in many paintings, I hope it lasts forever

I love this video thank you so much for presenting the colors. The way you did. I love quash I love Holbein artists gouache especially. Price point per each the set has changed quite a bit where you said they were like $50-$60 said about $86 a set so watching you do each one of the seasons makes it a lot easier for me to figure out which ones I wanna do on that painting above, which is, sublime beautiful by the way, did you sketch first or did you just go for it? Freehand with the paintbrush just absolutely beautiful😊❤❤❤❤❤❤

I would definitely recommend the spring set! There's a good selection of colors and they're really opaque/don't get muddy quickly that you would be able to make great art with just this set. So far it's been my favorite set to work with, I'm actually really surprised just how vibrant my paintings are using it! The summer set would be good if you need something similar to a primary set, but now that I think of it they're very similar to the normal Holbein Artist Gouache 12 set. I don't think the summer set is worth the cost if you already have that one. I wouldn't recommend the winter/autumn sets for your first set of gouache, since they feel like paints for building out a palette (I'm currently working on a painting using just the winter set, and not having a yellow has been really difficult, and the autumn set might be tough to use since there's only one blue) I'm so glad you liked the video, thank you for watching! :D

How are these different from Holbein's regular gouache? It seems like the main difference is in the palette, i.e. the Irodori line is based on Japanese seasonal colors??

That's right! From what I've seen the Irodori sets are curated to reflect the colors you would see in the landscape for Japan's seasons. I believe the color palettes are also supposed to mimic the pigments used in Nihonga painting, which is a traditional Japanese painting technique that uses crushed seashells and mineral pigments (kaiteki art has some really beautiful videos of Nihonga painting!) I think that's why I found the Irodori Gouache sets over in the dry pigment/Nihonga aisle at Sekaido in Japan, rather than with the other gouache. Painting wise these colors don't seem to handle any differently from the regular Holbein artist gouache, I actually mixed the two together when I paint and haven't seen any visible differences :)
