Hi luke, love these nerdy nitty gritty videos. Would you say some of these design features translate to longboards as well? Or is that totally different again? Friend of mine recently sold his Cali longboard because dispite the foam didnt 'work'. He cant really explain why tho, because hes not into board design.

@@Mongiloyd its different. You have so much momentum on a longer board, they become more about how to control rather than how to add speed. Some longboard designs play around with tail lift so the boards sits in the pocket better when nose riding. This adds drag and knocks the trim down a bit which is noticeable in paddling quite a bit. Especially if you are riding it in flatter waves. I've heard of people not liking Cali style nose riders in UK... To really get the best out of them you actually have to be quite a high level longboarder. For normal surfers wanting a longboards I always suggest more of a balanced rocker and adding more edge in the back third 👌.

Great video and loads of great in depth content - just a minor point when we say ‘uk waves’ do we mean cornish waves ? Plenty of parts of uk with fast performance reef breaks / punchy beach breaks in abundance?

@@jamesfisher2821 I guess so yes. We do have great waves on other coasts for sure. we live in Cornwall so our UK waves net is fairly jaded. 🤣. But 100% appreciate what the other coastlines can offer. I have had some of my best ever waves in the u.k. and unless properly sized and power waves... For the most part, boards go better in better waves... It's more noticeable in the weaker stuff when they aren't quite on point, and I feel like as a shaper that is where my mind tends to go. Even in our good waves I think we tend to deal with more rubber, and higher winds etc etc than some of your more idyllic settings and all of that requires thought on board design. But, if you want to make the most out of UK waves.... Dial in the boards that work at the lower scale and most average days as I think it's fair to say they are more abundant. Especially in good ol' Cornwall 🤣🤙

This is fun, thanks guys! I'm curious: How would you change the concave of the board and tail if you would put a squash tail instead of a swallow on that model (or any small wave board)?

@@Rbn-oy6pz maybe slightly flatter behind the back fin. But nothing dramatic. I always feel like a tail doesn't define a model. I think of a model like the ice-cream then the tail shape like the flavour or the wafer/sauce kinda deal. Like, it's important and makes the dessert what it is. But the foundations are the same.... Hope that makes sense. 🤣

When you referred to extended rail line? Do you mean outline? Is your rail line have the same amount of rocker as your stringer or do you have a flatter rail line and a curved stringer sorry if that sounds confusing 🙏🏽

@@guypere480 rail line referencing the width in the nose and tail creating a slightly straighter curve through the centre of the outline. As for curve there is more on rails than through centre due to concave. This is to help turn those extended rail when you are pushing through a turn on rail. So in theory you are trying to get the balance between rail engaged down the line for drive and through a turn for fluidity. It's working out the contradictions to get the best balances.

@@changingphysiques I would like to think I'm honest. We want to sell outboards bit we for sure want to make sure people get on the right board. The weekend rockstar leans a lot more to forgiveness and ease. It opens up this type of board to surfers lacking in wave catching prowess and quick adaptability on the wave.
