I think the best thing they could do is an extreme series of overly devastating battles with Vashtor barely winning only to discover it’s not a weapon at all. Instead it’s where the Old Ones went to hide but accidentally locked themselves in.

I like the idea that it's a tool the Old Ones used to create the Aeldari pantheon, created through this device and sustained by the psychic energy of the Aeldari as a fuel source for these artifical gods created to fight the C'tan. This could link it to the Ynari plotline, providing another alternative to awakening Ynead in order to get the Eldar involved in the race for the weapon. Likewise, with the Golden Throne failing, the Imperium might treat this as an alternative way to save the Emperor by converting him into a proper god. Abbadon doesn't like being the bitch of the Four, and treats them entirely as a means to an end, so this could be his ticket to getting out from under their thumb once and for all. And obviously the Necrons remember how much of a pain in the ass the Aeldari pantheon were back during the War in Heaven when there were fully intact C'tan running around, and have every reason to try to keep anyone from whipping up more gods.

He isn't looking to find a way to become a 5th chaos god, he is looking for a way to become their master. Necrons proved that technology is the key to defeating literal gods and he is literally the chaos god of technology basically. It makes me wonder if he was a mortal being at some point and this is only his partially ascended form. Maybe he is the soul of The Silent King that was never devoured by the C'tan but instead was sent into the warp somehow. Technology is such a material concept that I would bet his origins are as a mortal being. Perhaps even the elusive machine god of the cult mechanicus, or is a fragment of the void dragon that adapted to the warp though his technological expertise. I'm trying not to dismiss any possibility here.

I would bet on the C'tan scenario, and yes I'm aware that it's probably the void dragon that was always the machine god to begin with, but if anyone could do this it would probably be him. The C'tan were weak to warp energy, but this is the very concept of knowledge and technology here. The very fact that there is a god of material concepts kinda points in this direction, he must be of both realms.

Vashtorr is perhaps being a pawn to the other Chaos Gods as if such a weapon existed the Ruinous Powers would have done everything in their power to destroy or obtain this weapon, and make no mistake that the Ruinous Powers will do everything in their power to make sure that Vashtorr fails in his quest, but the question will be the fate of Abbadon for his part in following Vashtorr lead, especially with how he is ignoring a more weaker Imperium that is distracted by the other threats of the Galaxy.

His resources are finite, chaos space marines can get killed, and Chaos Gods wouldn't dare to touch Vashtorr otherwise they lose their warmachines and other gods would turn on them - they are not allies.

my guess is that the weapon is a device that can drain warp energy from psychic beings and give it to others, vashtor plans to use it to drain energy from the ruinous powers to ascend to godhood, it would also explain why the old ones went through so much trouble to hide it as it would be the only thing that would be a serious threat to them

I believe Vashtorr is the Omnissiah. I also want to see him become the newest Chaos Entity, regardless of what the other 4 want. It could touch off a massive Mechanicus civil war, and I'd love to see that, especially if Golden Age of Technology tech began popping back into use.

I think it is essence manipulation device, the one used to create eldar, krorks, hrud and other. Anything you imagine is possible in warp yes? So what if this device took your idea and used warp energy to create something in the material universe. Would explain the old ones' ability to create races with capabilities never seen before. It would also most likely disturb the warp in catastrophic way, maybe even contributing to its current state, that's why it was locked away. Old ones, being the selfish pricks they were, were willing to risk it to save their asses from necron, but were not originally willing risking galaxy to "fix" necrontyr, turning warp into turmoil, weakening the barrier in between realms in process, allowing the enslavers and other nasties to seep into reality. All clues would point to this.

Just to think why a creator will hide and lock some tool which helps him to be ultimate being, then all of this seems iffy. Old Ones weren’t stupid ones. So I ask myself, what I would hide away to such a degree. Hmm, either a prisoner so horrible and also indestructible that I cannot do anything else to hide him in secret prison. Or a tool which is not useful and amazing how I wanted but it is not safe to destroy it. Or I m kinda in shame about that so I don’t have a heart to destroy it. So I hide it away
