Well, in that case the Portuguese suffered the puberty phase, i remember that a few weeks after Tridente was delivered it got sent back to the shipyard for repairs, it suffered from leaks! I remember thinking it was not a good sign on a brand new submarine...

Like most submarines nowadays. Nothing special to brag about. The difference being that other submarines have an oceanic capability, somewhat limited depending on the design, while German subs and Swedish subs are shallow water submarines with a very limited deep water capability, so is the Korean one, they are not meant for weeks of patrol with oceanic depths out of the continental shelf. Unlike a Soryu, a Scorpene, a Walrus, etc. These 3 classes, the Scorpene with the Chilean navy and Indian navy, the walrus with the Dutch navy, the soryu with the Japanese navy have proven to be good and reliable out of the continental shelf at oceanic depths, something modern german designs haven’t.

None, simple answer. Besides our 212 are more then capable to blue water operations. There are Fotos of the Snorkelattackoptics of an american Carrier in Training. Show me these of bigger Subs . Even the 214 can travel, as startet here two weeks submerged, thats no shallow water sub.

The ROK Navy U214 also had problems. We found that the German inverter was broken and the outer hull was poorly designed. Of course, the Germans did not admit their mistake. 😅 Fortunately, all 9 submarines have now been fixed. However, we replaced some German parts with Korean ones and modified the external shape.

Nice video, but i think the video forget to mention type 218SG (which IMHO is a combination of 212 and 214), and the plan to replace the AIP system with Lithium Ion system for future 214, following The Scorpene success at Indonesia

AIP really makes these smaller defensive submarines way more dangerous. It's still a couple of steps behind the global reach of nuclear submarines, but the gap is closing.

Well they are designed for different environments, if your operating in the mediterranean sea a nuclear supmarine is to big and less effective than a smaller supmarine.

@@emilsinclair4190 AIP gives you a benefits of a nuclear submarine (unlimited underwater endurance) for a month or two. A combination of both wouldn’t help. Also France has no issue using nuclear submarines in the Mediterranean. They aren’t “too big” for the sea. The benefit of non nuclear is lower price and you don’t have to have a nuclear program to maintain your boats.

To partially understand why greece had to pay this price: usually development costs and their payback are part of the cost of a submarine. So if someoen orders less the price off one would increase. Additioanally providing the resources to build the boat creates costs.

You hit it at the end of the presentation. Cost and a lack of need among potential customers. I would say most navies don't really need the 214's impressive capabilities.

That was said in the video, but its not true. The subs were flawed from the beginning, and the Portuguese and the South Koreans had similar problems. So nothing was fixed. The South Koreans upgraded their subs with their own technology, from Hyundai Heavy Industries. The Greeks and the Portuguese dont have these capabilities. Also, despite their financial situation, the Greeks paid for 6 of them, and only received 4 submarines. Angela Merkel - the chancellor of Germany at the time - did really put the pressure on the Greeks to pay for the defence contracts. Otherwise she wouldnt support them with the INF.

Thats not right. You paid for 6 of them, but only received 4. The German chancellor - Angela Merkel - did put really the preassure on the Greeks to pay for their defence contracts, despite your financial situation and despite those subs were flawed from the beginning. She forced them to do this deal. Same with the Portuguese. The Portuguese subs stayed in port for more than one year because they couldnt afford to run them. German austerity politics really put you under the bus, and they did whatever they wanted to your country, including buying all your ports and airports. Its a pity. But now that they dont have the cheap gas from Russia, and they still have high wages, their industry is leaving Germany for good. Now they are the sick man of Europe, and their economy will only survive if they do drastic reforms. I can assure you however, its not the peoples fault - in each country. Its politicians who ruin everything.

I think Germany is producing too many variants of coventional submarines, off shelf, without direct request by the costumers. U212, U214, U218 are all too similar, with many subvariants, in size and capabilities, eating market one to another and making the costumers nervous about future support for what might become obsolete too quickly. Tailoring a single hull, like the Scorpene, to the needs of the costumers seems the winning strategy here.

I mean the companies don't rly cafe if they but a 212 or a 214. In both case it is the same company. They design other types to try to guess the wants off other countries in the future.
@Gentleman...Driver
@Gentleman...Driver 6 күн бұрын
The variants are part of the contracts. Many countries want to boost their own economy and their own knowledge. So a technology transfer is a usual practice. And all their customers have different requirements and want maybe different weapon systems, or sensors, or radios, or whatever. Because maybe they are producing them already in their own country, or they get the sensors somewhere else cheaper with similar capabilities for example. Also, there are like 25 years between the delivery of the first 214 and the building of the newest 218SG. So there are of course some advancements made during all this time. And also adjustments to the climate of Singapore, or even another rudder/propeller combo, because their waters are quite narrow and the sub needs to do more maneauvers, but therefor loosing some fuel efficiency compared to the subs in the med.

GS-Yuasa Corporation began developing lithium-ion batteries for use in submarines in the 1990s, and in the early 2000s participated in the “Research and Trial Production of a New Type of Main Battery for Submarines” contracted by the then Technical Research Division of the Defense Agency and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. Based on our extensive experience and achievements gained through years of manufacturing lead-acid batteries for submarines, we completed the development of lithium-ion batteries for submarines that meet the quality and performance requirements for submarines, and signed a contract with the Defense Acquisition Agency in fiscal 2015. The contract was signed with the Defense Acquisition Agency in FY2015. We plan to prepare for mass production by March 2017, and to deliver the batteries to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in August 2018.

Lithium ion batteries have a tendency to catch fire. This would immediately kill a submarine, so the risk has to be near zero. The next subs will have it tho. They will retain hydrogen as it lasts longer

@@the_retag Next up is the "all-solid-state battery." There is a lot of research being done on the components of the battery, so it's hard to say for sure, but this approach is expected to improve the reliability, durability, and maintainability of the battery. In a few years, cars equipped with practical models will be announced, and even further down the line, they will likely be installed in "submarines."

German Tyssankrupp Company sells its 3rd Class quality New Type 214 Class Submarines to International Customers But Germans themself uses Superior Type 212 Class high Quality, more Stealthy Submarines & for its Partner Italy. Type 212 class Submarines are highly Superior using Secretly developed Unique Titanium Alloy Hull for high stealth & to avoid metal hull detection in the sea by the enemy Sonars. New Type 214 Class Submarines uses Steel Alloy Hull hence it can be detected by Advance Sonars. Hence Type 212 class Submarines are Superior Compaired to Inferior New Type 214 class Submarines which are made up of Steel Alloys and ment for export market. German Navy it self do not use New Type 214 class Submarines bcoz they know Type 214 Subs are easily detectable in sea.
