And "Mistral" is a play on words with the wind called Mistral. It's a very strong wind that blows in my region, the south of France. The Romans were already talking about it when they invaded my region.

I dig the naming convention of this missile, like where cars or other vehicles are named after significant named winds, like Pagani has the Zonda and the Huayra (and VW had the Siccarro). (but not trite, obvious stuff like Tornado, Hurricane, Typhoon, Cyclone, etc... though the GMC Typhoon IS really f'n cool!) Chinook, Bora, Harmattan, Simoon, Buran... Others?

Also about the "why a man-transportable over a man-portable ?" Is that France had a very high degree of motorization of frontline units compared to lot of armies during the time it was developed (still true today, even if lot of armies have catched up since), meaning there was less of a need for man-portable missiles.

@@murphy7801 it's not so much wheels but mobility; That was initially a doctrine that was chosen for asymmetrical warfare in Afghanistan and the Sahel region of Africa. However one might argue that it might also be a good choice for conventional high intensity warfare in Europe as recent events have shown that modern MBTs and even some tracked IFVs are too heavy for the terrain in Ukraine

My country uses both the Mistral and FIM-92 Stinger MANPADS. The former is used to guard the Presidential Palace and naval ships, while the Stinger is used by Special Forces and Army.

This vid is another well researched, well organized, and well communicated set of information about a weapon system that isn't covered as well on other channels, or on Wikipedia. The combination of info about the history behind the system, its statistics, and an analysis of its applications is a welcome change from channels like 'Breaking defense', 'Defense Squad' 'Dung Tran', 'Now I Found Out', and other amateurs. (It's more like 'Horizon', 'Not What You Think', and other semi-expert outlets- approaching content as detailed as that from experts like the ISW, Janes, Sub Brief, H.I. Sutton, etc.... I'd recommend any/all of those channels, BTW, if anyone here isn't already following them: So, let's give this vid its well earned +1, as usual (it deserves more!). I look forward to more content from this channel, which is at the very top end for well organized and succinct summaries of information about it's subject, particularly for semi-laypersons like myself (it isn't for experts-, but, is still valuable!). CHEERS! 😎

Sub Brief has a huge biais against the French and their equipments. I wouldn't recommend his channel for those. Perun is a much more reliable source, and unbiased despite his origin.

Everyone has blindspots, if it may be Sub Brief or myself, or you- I'll pay more attention . (Edit- I agree hlthat Perun IS excellent for the big picture of defense economics and the strategic implications of such re: Ukraine in particular. I really dig that channel.) Cheers!

France doesn't use the MPCV. A future Serval variant with a remote controlled turret and 2 ready to fire missiles + machine gun is due to enter service around 2027. And "unofficially", mistrals shot down a bunch of shaheds and Russian cruise missiles in Ukraine.

Thanks for sharing your info. Too bad we don't use the MPCV, those vehicle versions are badass. However, I really have no clue why using the mistrals in Ukraine would be unofficial. Unlike a (typical Macron) false step on the starting line, France is now as proud as any western country to showcase how much they helped Ukraine. Leading to a war of announcements at "who gave the most". We (yes, I'm French) are very proud of the fact the artillery gun "César" was sent and efficient (despite low number sent). Why wouldn't we with the "Mistral" ?

It should be noted that Denmark hasn't made an official selection for the Mistral missile - yet. It's likely to happen before end of year, but right now, Denmark hasn't chosen a missile for their new Skyranger 30 towers.

A man portable missile like the stinger are good but don’t have battery power to use for more than 1 minute the thermal sight, which means that you can’t search targets with it, that’s why we use the missile on a tripod

Not a MANPADS, but a SHORAD (sort of, because it can be used also against ground and sea target). It's a heavy launcher system, not a light man-portable system. Where did you saw that it's "man portable"? Do you know what is the weight of the complete weapon?! It's like saying that a 120mm heavy mortar is a "man portable howitzer". It's not a MANPADS, never was (i remember that they tried to convert it into a MANPADS, i saw a prototype at the CEITO camp in 95-96, but it was canceled due to the massive recoil, weight and impossibility to get a stable targeting, and some other thing, but mostly that). The MISTRAL was thinked to be used as a short range high precision high speed ground AA system with a minimum 0.95 Pk frontal + flares.

@@Jamirio No, there isn't. It was a prototype (mostly for probable export market) that was canceled because it was too heavy, too bulky, uneffective, unreliable, too expensive and above all mostly useless for us. I can speak about it, i was there while the latest tests occurred mid 90's. We don't use MANPADS, never did, never will, because we have chosen multipurpose, mobile, heavier and more effective systems like SHORAD and alikes. And, man, a 30kg MANPADS? Do you know what it is, 30kg, on the field, only for a weapon that you will "maybe" have to use? Do you know what is the weight of an Igla or a Stinger? A MANPADS have to be the lightest, cheap, and dumb-easy to use possible. The Mistral is the opposite, and requires a heavy and complex training. The basic grunt cannot, in no way, fire and hit anything with it without knowing the system, never, while an Igla or Stinger are literally point & click weapons.

@@Jamirio There Is No Mistral MANPADS And there is no MANPADS in any french army or corps at all. You know what? Show me. Show me, show us, at least ONE picture of a french MANPADS, or just a french soldier using a MANPADS. "Stinger is more expensive" ...lol. A M.3 SATCP mounted on a PAMELA (the cheapest, ground manual) with one missile, only one, cost about 300.000€. Just one. A Stinger cost less than 40.000$...

Because they don't know shit, and cannot make the difference between a MANPADS and a SHORAD. It's like comparing a hand grenade with a RPG...

Mistral is a bit heavier, covering 4 times the surface of stinger and a bit larger warhead. The stinger is available to make it on shoulders, which is not bad either. As said, mistral are used on véhicule, ships and choper. It may be integrated on drones. It can be used aginst light ships.

I think a manpad not being a shoulder fired is a big disadvantage. Because manpads like the mistral and RBS-70 require that you set up a stand/base while something like the igla or stinger or starstreak are faster to deploy. Just think if an aircraft just did an attack run on you, how much faster could you engage with a stinger vs mistral as it flys away. Now this doesn’t mean having a stand is a bad thing, I just think they should have an option for both static use and shoulder fired. Like how the starstreak can either be shoulder fired or has a stand. Edit: I made this comment before finishing the video. I see now that it’s not really comparable to a stinger. Which makes me think that militaries that use this should still have a manpad available to their forces

You can't have your cake and eat it too, if your missile is bigger it's more effective, faster with superior maneuverability and 3 times the explosive charge. It's just not the same class of weapon.

@@CROM-on1bz ya I agree, that’s why I added the edit. It also brings into question why the US doesn’t have something in between stinger and the new M-SHORAD being developed/made. We have the Avenger system but that’s a whole humvee with stingers and a 50 cal.

@@omarrp14 Perhaps the need is not felt and the different systems operated seem sufficient to them. The French and American doctrines, although close, are not identical.

What is the canaster they screwed to the launch tube front? Coolant for the IR seeker? Battery?

This is the gas cartridge to eject the missile I think, ir seeker is passive

Yes it's exactly as you think , coolant for the seeker , specified in the video lasts about 45 seconds , so if you don't fire the missile in that time you have to replace the canister , all IR seeker manpads use this system .

This is actually both a chemical battery for the operator's acquisition sights and pressurized nitrogen to cool the IR seeker during the said acquisition phase. This is specific to this launch platform. Somebody said that it was a gas cartridge to eject the missile out of the tube but that is done via a motor located at the back end of the missile regardless of the launch platform used.

Yes. They don't have it as part of their regular equipment, but some have been provided by european countries.

Yes, Ukraine was provided with at least 200 mistral systems since the beginning of the war. It's hard to know the actual figure due to the sensitive nature of the topic; however MBDA France has been tasked with roughly doubling the production rate of mistrals in 2024.

Not sure why a 2-man crew is considered a drawback here. There is no common job position in the US army - and not likely any other - that has fewer than 2 soldiers assigned to it at a time... Including moving between or doing menial tasks. It's called The Buddy System, and is the prevailing religion in an organized military. Also, if you're going to use the terms "portable" and "transportable" as contrasting terms, you need to define them yourself, because they are the same word in English until you do. Speaking of English, yours is declining and it's already difficult to understand you on a good day.
