I wonder why whenever there's a weapon match between different discipline that they always wear their own protection for the weapon they're using. They should switch mask! The fencing mask is not enough to dampen the heavy blow of the bamboo blade and the Kendo mask is not enough to stop the rapier's tip.
@finnishfatman

I've wondered the same. They should essentially switch gears to match the weapon of their opponent 😁 But I think it's done mostly for "artistic" reasons, as in to make it clear what kinda equipment both uses. Still doesn't make it as safe as it should of course. Gotta be careful with training 👍

A rapier user allowing the distance to be closed is doing it wrong. Reach advantage is king in all realistic melee combat. This is why polearms dominated in military history. As for kendo, it's a bit silly to pit a kendoka against anything but another kendoka. Like pugilism, kendo as a sport is defined by its self-imposed restrictions. In contrast, the rapier is defined by the question, 'what's the most effective sword possible for defeating an unarmored foe in a strictly 1v1 context?' Anyway, I don't know if you noticed, but the guy is using the rapier, and he's not going 100% at his girlfriend kendoka. Because, you know, don't wanna bully your girl. If you look up actual fencing competition videos here, you're gonna see radically more back and forward movement from the fencers than what this guy is doing. This guy is deliberately staying close enough to the kendoka to make this video fun.

Yep, rapiers are heavier than they look. One handed swords with modern fencing techiniques tend to put a lot of stress on the hand, that's why they are pretty deadly if used in conjuction with a dagger or a buckler on the off hand. Sabers and medieval arming swords, on the other hand, are more versatile, you can cut and do other, more creative stuff with them.

"two handed sword is typically faster and quicker to adjust than a one handed sword (wrists move faster than arms)" A lot of the action in rapier fencing comes from the wrist, and the rapier's point of balance is optimized to enable very quick pointwork. That katana user is fast, probably the fastest from the vid on YT :), but still im kinda buffled why the Rapier user was just waiting for attacks not using his range advantage, piercing etc. He is just passively waiting most of the time for an attack. Almost every time when the Rapier user started to be agressive he instantly was getting hits as first, but yeah the problem is hitting and not getting hit back by katana in responce, althrough rapiers were used with daggers and that would be a huge advantage vs swords used two handedly. Rapier is just a duelist weapon desinged to use with a 2nd specialist weapon, specially effective vs none/low armored targets and has advantage in that aspect in terms of duel.

Bit of a mismatch here, though, because the shinai used by the kendoka is practice tool that weighs a fraction of the sword it's meant to represent, whereas the rapierist is using basically a blunted replica of a real sword, historically weighted. Here, the kendoka is playing a martial sport, fighting someone who is practicing a martial art. Do the same thing but swap out the kendoka for a kenjitsu master with a blunt steel katana and you have a more accurate version of this matchup.

As far as rapiers go its easy to forget how a how large an impact a small movement can be. Destreza is the perfect example of such. Its very hard to initiate a cut 2 handed against an opponent whos home base is a middle guard. The hands or body are almost always exposed to quick assault on wind up.

i disagree. Looking at the video, most of the time the rapier doesn't land, and even if it does, the damage is non-fatal. But the kendo strikes would all have been fatal, even the strikes to the hand would have cut the hand off. The kendo head strikes would have been instant kill

@@henrylau3888 I disagree with your disagreement. Thrusts may not *look* as lethal as cuts, but a puncture to the lungs, heart, head, and digestive organs would kill you. Heart and head would kill you immediately, punctures to the lungs will have you drowning in your own blood, and punctures to the guts would leave you with "undesirables" getting all over your other organs and dying of a very quick infection and or the toxins from your body's own waste. Training rapiers are also allot different from real ones. Real rapiers were allot sturdier and rigid, they had to be in order to get through thick clothing, rib cages, and even skulls. Yes, a dedicated thrust to the skull with a battle-ready rapier would have gone through the entire structure and pop out the other end. Not to mentions the reach advantage, superior hand protection, and the fact that thrust are far more difficult to spot and predict than cuts. The reason why training rapiers are allot more flexible is because you don't want to hurt people when jamming a thin metal stick onto their torso when you're just practicing. Most modern reproductions for sparring are far more flexible than their historical counterparts for that reason. For the rapier man not hitting as much as the Kendo man, I'd put it up to the Katana man just having better reaction time and physic. Rapier man did look a bit chonky, ngl.

@@henrylau3888 I just took a longer look at the video and brought out the notepad, the Rapier user only lost by one point. Not very considerable as a whole. @N Maruri Through the brain case yes. Otherwise, no. For me personally, a scratch would probably have me on the floor crying. In the Blackhawk Down episode, an American soldier was shot with an unexploded RPG and kept fighting. People have been shot in the heart and head and kept fighting, only to die later. Unless a hit disconnects the central nervous system, there is no guarantee the fight stops.

Other than the crippling anxiety that the rapier would go through the gap in the men and pierce the kendoka’s eye, this is rly exhilarating to watch. both sides had really good seme and ki. I actually have fought against someone with a shinai and kodachi b4 but never against someone with a cloak. It probably wouldn’t work well since shinai tips are cloth and our gloves are pretty much mittens.

This reminds me of my friend and I. In high school, we used to go outside during lunch with a couple of foam polo bats (roughly the size and shape of a mace) and hockey shin pads we'd strap to our arms, and duel with them. He had taken Kendo lessons before, and I mainly mimicked HEMA using a one-handed weapon and makeshift shield (I had taken no lessons in anything of the sort). Despite the fact that he had taken lessons and I hadn't, we were surprisingly even as we messed around and whacked each other with foam clubs. It was a lot of fun, and I'm surprised the teachers gave us permission to do that.

The kendo fencer definitely has the better skills. The rapier fencer was super timid with the bind, and the kendo fencer just controlled everything for most of what I saw. There is always skill difference when you compare the two sport and duel them. Kendo only learns how to duel against kendo and similarly for rapier fencing. Honestly though if there was a sport where your given the choice of either kendo or fencing sword then I believe rapier will dominate.

@@vainklutz3179 idk man, there will be always people that will be exeptional with the katana or long sword, remember that with one of those you can easily (kinda haha) move the rapier out of the way to attack, and as rapier users have to be pointing their weapon to at their foe, it is not so hard to aim for it, you can see on this video how the Kendoka kept being able to hit near the wrist withou letting his opponent lunge at him, and he was aiming for the wrist! What if he goes for the rapier? But in the case of a school/dojo where you can use the weapon of your choosing, people will probably adapt to this, as i am _not so good_ with rapiers, i can't accuratelly tell how would that look like, but the point is that both weapons have their strenghts! None will "dominate" over the other, as both sides will constantly adapt their game!

The question which one had the best fighting style was already solved 500 years ago. The Portugese landed, won every fight with two hand fighting against anyone who tried to challenge them, Musashi was an eye witness of that and copied the Portugese style and adopted it, he became the best fighter of japan and a legend with a copy of the Portugese style defeating every existing fencing master of japan. Old age European style > old age Japanese style. if you believe mushashi didnt use portugese sailor dual wielding style, than you are in pure denial.

There's no evidence Musashi witness Portuguese dual wielding, dual wielding was also a thing in Japan long before him, he's just famous for opening a school particularly for it, it came from his family linkage of jitte, he's not the best fighter in Japan history there were even Samurai with a higher win count of duels than him. his book was not even widely known about until a radio broadcast made it popular in the 50s. He also lost duels and parts of his life are questionable.
