Wonder if they tried to find a foster mom orangutan that would take care of her. Instead of being in a house with humans. She needs to be around grass, trees things that babies need. The babies stay with mom for yrs before they venture out on their own. They hold on to mom 24/7 until they can crawl safely. I’m glad she is ok and taken care of. I know some zoos that keep baby there so the others can see baby just can’t touch yet. Caregivers stay overnight and they take shifts. Guess every zoo is diff

There are waaaaay to many babies, also adults are set free, and they can easily get rejected from a surrogate mom
@TMS-pj7fp

@Cabo I wouldn't say abandon but they will reject a baby. Mom is separated for a time mom may reject, mom has traumatic birth mom may reject, mom gets separated during distressing situation, maybe hunter injurs/kills mom and baby and mom become separated sometimes mom might not find or search 4 baby. Sounds like this particular mom has rejected babies b4, maybe 1st birth mom was too young or was traumatic and since then she hasn't embraced motherhood. I read somewhere that mothers wont become pregnant unless they feel safe and secure, so why then reject baby, maybe since in zoo environment conception was pushed on mom or not natural. I'm no expert and I'm not saying the zoo is doing anything wrong just giving my opinion.

@Cabo Very rarely if there is food shortage and the mother has other babies, or sometimes they get dropped when running away from predators like tigers. But they usually stay for 7+ years with their mom, that's pretty long in the animal world, most animals need a year and then they are good to go.

What wonderful work this woman is doing! Orangutans have such close and intimate relationships between mother and child. The likelihood of this baby being psychologically healthy is greater with this bond. She will do well with a surrogate orangutan mom when she is ready at two years old. This woman works for the zoo and will still see Kara. I love orangutans! The babies are beyond adorable! I know it is a lot of work but I would love the opportunity to help raise the babies!

I really hope that there is more to Kara’s story than what was shown here. It looks like Kara is being raised like a human child. She should be taught how to be what she is, an orangutan. How is she going to react when put in with other orangutans? If this baby is being raised without learning how to live like an orangutan, these people and the zoo are being extremely irresponsible!!

It’s not threatening her or getting defensive, it clearly had massive trust for her that even the thought of her being out down makes her terrified. Like you’re so wrong it hurts, it wasn’t making its guttural threatening sounds, in fact it didn’t mind getting close to her face at all as we have seen multiple times within the video.

Cute little baby, people in the comments are so slow and don't realize this is super old footage, and the world was way less progressive and liberal back then people act shocked as if this was nothing special back then, ofc the orangutan should be with the mother but maybe listen to the commentary?? Alot of people think they are orangutan experts, all of baby orphan orangutans are looked after and trained for 7+ years..... They can't survive in the wild alone before. They are like humans, you don't just take a new born and throw him on the sidewalk at a job fair.

I am so confused why isn’t she at the zoo or wherever she’s from getting acquainted with other orangutans when a mother rejects their baby at a zoo? I’ve only seen them keep the baby at the zoo and take care of them there. Why bring the baby home and get the baby attached to you. This makes no sense.

She must have been, the lady said they take her to see her mother. Unfortunately it's fairly common for captive orangutan mothers to reject or neglect their babies, especially their first one. I think she said something at the end about hoping that "Sarah" takes care of her next baby so that must be the mother's name.

@@SS11660 How can they be on the endangered species list when there is over hundred sanctuaries and preserves jam packed with orangutans. Thousands of zoos worldwide with thriving orangutan populations. How can they be extinct when we see video after video of dozens sometimes hundreds of baby orangutans? Year after year since sanctuaries started as far back as 70 years ago they get jammed packed with baby orangutans. If they avre endangered where do all these babies come from? I assure you the local people who live there do not go out and Kill 5 or 6 adult orangutans to get a baby they can sell on the black market. First off wild orangutans are solitary animals secondly the people who live there love the orangutans and when they find one they take it and treat it better then their own children. The cages are crude because the people there have nothing, not even running water are walled electricity. They work hundreds of hours to feed and clothe their own children! ANSWER: ORANGUTANS IN HUNDREDS OF SANCTUARIES AND THOUSANDS OF ZOOS GO UNCOUNTED BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT WILD. SO ONLY WILD ORANGUTANS ARE ENDANGERED. ONCE AN ORANGUTAN ENTERS A SANCTUAURY OR PRESERVE THEY NEVER LEAVE. HENCE THEY NEVER GET COUNTED AGAIN. THEY BRING WILD ORANGUTANS INTO THEIR SANCTIARIES ALL THE TIME MAKING IT LOOK AS IF THE POPULATION IS DWINDLING DUE TO GREEDY FAT PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GULP DOWN PALM OIL. THATS THE FURTHEREST THING FROM THE TRUTH. TRUTH IS ORANGUTANS ARE THRIVING THANKS TO PEOPLE WHO WORK HARD IN ZOOS AND SANCTUARIES BREEDING THE CRAP OUT OF THEM. Female orangutans will get pregnant when they already have a tiny baby. Males mate with the females whoare carrying tiny babies all the time. The female will then have two orangutans to feed so she abandons one usually by where people live so the baby will cry out for help and the villagers respond. Sure there are scumbags who will do anything for money but that's very small % of population. By keeping them on the endangered species list it gives a very small group of people control over these animals creating for them a nice business and they use them as propaganda. These people are not even from the countries these orangutans are from. If you look at old documentaries the people who started these sanctuaries are white Europeans usually from Germany. They make millions in donations, TV shows like orangutan Island and jungle school, tourism and free land and probably a bunch of other ways we don't know about. All while portraying themselves as heros to the orangutans, just like Jane goodnot did. They use her business model. Jane goodnot started saving the chimpanzees when there were 2 million in the wild and millions more in captivity back in the late 60's early 70's. She sterilized tens of thousands of chimpanzees that came through her sanctuary. Today there are 120,000 chimpanzees in the wild. SO either Ms goodnot is incompetent moron or she is up something no good. Jane created the problem so she could be the solution. To this day the chimpanzees males are not allowed to live with the females in her sanctuaries and all the other chimp sanctuaries, almost all use the same methods she uses. ITS DAM SCAM THATS WHY THESE PEOPLE DO IT. Common people cannot have an animal such as this they might think they are free or they might spend too much time with them and not enough time working and paying taxes.
@SS11660

Their natural habitat is being destroyed for palm oil farms faster than they can reproduce is why they are listed as endangered.plus adults are killed when they burn the trees down to make room to plant palms. A female usually doesn't have baby until around 14 years old then a baby every 7 years so not reproducing fast.

Babies cling onto their mother for the first year. PERIOD! That’s their natural defence. Their mother will take care of them safe and they will eventually start to venture out on their own starting around 6 to 8 months old. Their mother is their security blanket until almost 8 years old while she teaches them everything they need to know in order to go and live a solitary life until the mate. By putting her down and making them cry is totally uncaring and cruel.
