Very interesting. I'm definitely trying this. I know survival is usually best with hard wood cuttings and with new growth, so I would expect this would be a challenge to do in the middle of summer. Have you tried this with soft wood cuttings in summer, maybe with defoliating to reduce water loss?
@blueridgebonsai91552 жыл бұрын
Agree that these are big cuttings to root so I would have added a couple extras just in case. Also you could place the tray on a heat pad to increase the chance of rooting success. I am really happy to see you actually talk about aftercare as so few KZbin bonsai “masters” ever mention it, yet it is the most critical step, so kudos to you. I could also see a mod of this method where the trees are screwed to a piece of plywood and set in a ceramic or plastic pot. It would give the same result without having to screw through the tray. I would be really concerned that the tray would crack with so many holes in such a small area. Did you put washers on the screws to prevent them breaking through the tray bottom? As always another good addition to your channel 👍
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply2 жыл бұрын
Hey man! Thank you for your kind words 🙏🌳To be honest with you, I don’t believe the heating mat would help unless it is done right on the ground. Ground, heat mat, tree then it might work. There is something about elevating cuttings and or collected trees where the success rate goes drastically down. On the floor and out of wind has always worked wonders for me. You can absolutely use a wooden slab, plastic slab or whatever you’d like. These pots are specifically made for modifications, and it makes it a bit easier for me.

Do you water these cuttings so they stay pretty moist most if not all of the time like most cuttings? And do you advice rooting hormones or removal of the bark and the cambium layer for improved results? Or even just scarring the bark where you wish them to root? How long would you say it takes for cuttings about that size to push out enough new growth indicating there are enough roots developing so the group can be moved? Is this done in one growing season?

Awesome tips about the earth resonance, thank you. It makes sense, trees don't walk around in nature. The tree is a response to it's own genetic material unfolding in the specific environment- which is a very important factor. So allowing the tree to be in unchanging environment without moving it, makes sense. It must feel very shocking for them to be moved I imagine

I about 20 miles north of Times Square (NYC). I have a maple a friend gave me in a big nursery pot. It looks like one you might find at Home Depot or Lowe's. I is in full leaf. I pruned the lo g shoots back. I see 1 or 2 limbs I think I can airlayer. If I try what you did in this video, would scraping off bark at the cut point (like airlayering) and painting with rooting hormone power be helpful ?

This is a game changer if these things actually root. Air layering...no point! Just chop it and plant it. Can you explain why these branches will root? I was waiting for you to add rooting hormones or wrap them in Spag moss or something. Not just screw it , cover it and enjoy :)

@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply The mother earth theory as I refer to it is powerful, more than a few times over the past years I have taken sick/ailing trees from friends and club members, planted them in a box of pumice in the ground and simply let them go for a year or two. The results are often stunning and recovery is sometimes miraculous. Good luck with this project, I’m tempted to give it a shot with some swamp maples I’ve had my eye on!
