I don't really care if Honda-powered Red Bull win the championship this season or not. But this Chapter of Honda F1 programme has been one of the most amazing story in the sport. From being a laughingstock to compete directly with the King of V6 Turbo Hybrid. While also starting the development later than other manufacturers. I think Honda can leave this sport with their heads up knowing that they have done such an incredible job, and putting Renault (and Ferrari) to shame.

@stevel9627

Definitely agree. The fact that no other manufacturers joined aside from Honda is proof how much of a risk it is as having any amount of lead time in development is a huge advantage in comparison to a new manufacturer as was shown when Honda was way behind at the time. Imagine if it was Renault who was the new kid on the block back then, they would of quit the sport within a few years.

The annoying thing is this story is that everyone seems to forget McLaren had a HUGE part in this as well. From not willing to adjust the chassis for the engine, not willing to budge on size-zero at first to manipulating the numbers by driving with extra downforce in free practice and thus blocking Honda in their development process.

Agreed! Made me think...What if F1 made their rules more conducive to electrification...required more of the power to come from the battery while still pushing ICE technology? Walking that tightrope...F1 can do better. It would drive both areas and keep OEMs like Honda in the game, and encourage others like VW to enter. It's a hard sell to invest in an F1 program when the world is moving electric.

The thing is though, a large part of why they're doing so well is because they decided to really go all out this year since it's their last in the sport so they want to go out with a bang, which is probably also the reason they've got a larger livery presence this year. Honda has been working very hard all these years, but it’s taken them a lot of time to get the right organizational structures in place, and they started off on the back foot with a rushed product based on a flawed concept. This year is where all the hard work has finally come together into a complete package that’s up there with the best. Honda’s decision to leave F1 sadly doesn’t have anything to do with their performance on track; it’s a corporate decision pure and simple.

Honda in the US suffered really big blows the last couple of years with sales. Seems like they're really relying on the F1 tech to introduce something new to the car market for commercial sales. We should all be thankful that Honda are in F1, even though it'll just be their PU that lives on till 2026 after they leave. They entered this complex era at least 2 years behind development than the other manufacturers, and now they have produced an engine that's at least as good as the Mercedes (probably better) whilst Ferrari and Renault still languish behind. They managed to chase down the Mercedes bullet train. Very impressive. F1 is less without Honda.

It is entirely reasonable to expect that this makes the battery less useful that it could be, for if it could carry a greater capacity or discharge at a higher rate then straightline performance could be improved. Battery technology is going to feature in all commercial vehicles in some form or another, so it would make sense for F1 to incentivise the development of battery tech. IIRC Honda's battery was one of its most criticized problems in its McLaren days because it would run out of juice and start harvesting before the end of the straight, killing the car's top speed exactly when the driver needed it the most to defend (or, on very rare occasions, attack). I find it very interesting that Honda has only just now upgraded its battery elements, even though the complaints about its battery's early harvesting disappeared a long time ago.

So glad Red Bull is keeping the Honda engine and has hired a few of their staff alongside ex Mercedes engineers to work on the 2022-2026 engine. Honda truly made F1 more exciting to watch this season and took a lot of learnings from its 2019 and 2020 season. Mercedes needs to be challenged in order to attract more fans to F1 and the FIA putting an engine freeze from 2022 is absolutely the right decision.

This is very similar to what McLaren was saying to Honda before the split.... Honda needs or needed at the time to bring in outside thinking.. ie the tech companies aiding or behind other engine and component manufacturers.... Honda now have a far more diverse technology arm, no longer all Japanese driven, but incorporating 10 other nationalities.... Good things take time I guess

because the mercs still have way more power than all other cars. atleast significantly. you can see how little downforce redbull runs with to even try and keep up, whilst mercedes run massive rear wings and can still go faster at the top end. its like mercedes is hiding something... maybe a potentially illegal part? thats why their engine has been so OP the past 7 years.

I would be more interested in knowing the physical size of the battery? Is it regulated or only the weight? Using 'super capacitors' as part of 'battery' the charge can be almost instantaneous with a drain to slowly charge main battery which will increase it's lifespan. As carbon nanotube technology is progressing, 'super caps' can be more easily factored into the equation. 'Super caps' have been used for many years in city buses so there is a precedent (and probably why Tesla purchased the largest US super cap manufacturer in 2019) If Honda is supplying power units to red Bull, they are only partly removed so developments are not wasted.

Awesome video. It also shows how hybrid cars are a virtue signal and not actually eco-friendly. Lithium ion batteries are very heavy, take up lots of space, and get worn out very quickly. Essentially all we end up with is tonnes of toxic waste and not much to show for it. I love the concept of hybrid cars, but without better battery technology, it's all just a fancy experiment.
@MrMezmerized
@MrMezmerized 3 жыл бұрын
There are still some gains, given the fact that you can store and use freely generated energy. And while there is indeed toxic waste, I don't think it is (nearly) as bad as fracking, fuel spent on oil transportation, oil leaks and spillage, oil disasters, and... no wars have been waged (yet) over raw materials for batteries. Can't say the same with regards to oil. I agree though, there will only be significant changes with real upgrades. Let's see what happens in the next few years with solid state batteries and batteries with silicon anodes.

@MrMezmerized
@MrMezmerized 3 жыл бұрын
@@Ale-nv2bo You don't hear much about how much oil leaks out of pipes every single day either. Or how much gets lost with other transportation annually. Or how bad fracking is. Or how much waste refineries produce. Or how much fuel leaks away at gas stations annually. How many mining chemicals for one Deepwater Horizon disaster? For the burning Kuwaiti oil fields during the war there? How much pollution and how many lives lost in military conflicts where oil was at least partially a factor? I'm not saying chemical waste isn't a serious issue. I'm saying nothing comes even close to the pollution of everything related to oil / fuels. Except coal perhaps.

I didn't get just one thing, if someone can clarify this for me. So did Verstappen get the new battery and control electronics all the way back in Belgium or just now in Russia, hence the reason why they changed so many of his engine components? Cause if the latter is the case, then that would explain why he climbed all the way up to 7th in a track that doesn't suit their car and also be a huge sign of intend for the coming races.
