Since based on some mythologies the Fey Folk and Aelves have issues with electromagnetic fields and as a result cold iron. More likely electromagneturgists ability to manipulate electromagnetic fields and the electromagnetic spectrum might be more useful creating particle beams (aka lightning bolts), lasers, detection, range finding, and communications.

Just some quick magnet science: Magnetic force happens in a field. Anything that's gonna respond to magnetism is gonna be affected in this field (in this case, ferromagnetic metals like iron). Interestingly, if you stick metal to a magnet, it actually gets stronger - the strict science behind it is beyond me, but essentially iron (and other metals) is full of dipoles, and when you stick a lump of iron in a magnetic field it causes all the dipoles to align with the field, which basically turns the lump of iron into it's own, weaker magnet. Now the benefit is probably gonna get outweighed by the extra distance you're putting between the actual magnet and what you wanna stick to it, but if you're gonna have something in the way, it's best that it be metal. Just some bonus info- soft iron is much better for this than hard steel, since the harder it gets the less free the dipoles are to move around. You can also actually magnetise a piece of metal by waving a strong magnet over it repeatedly in one direction- this aligns the dipoles a lot, and even after you take the magnet away the metal will stay weakly magnetic (very handy for screwdrivers.) Careful though, because if you drop it on the ground or something you can knock all the dipoles out of orientation and it'll be back to being merely ferromagnetic. For the same reasons, you should try not to let magnets snap into eachother too much- for one, they tend to be brittle, but it also reduces their magnetism slightly each time.

They have solved that now. No electricity and a powerful magnet with an on of function exist now. I assume they do it by having two magnets counteract each other then by using a mechanism tumble one of the magnets around so they instead add to each other. Thease are common lifting tools now. They can add a magnetic handle to reasonably heavy objects. We have one in use at my work for this purpose.

One thing that I cannot believe you didn't try is magnetizing a shield. The premise - you could affect your opponent's swing (even a little would go a long way) TOWARDS your shield. Bonus points if it makes it difficult for them to recover after the strike.

Its actually not that bad of an idea, just executed by muppets who don't understand the physics.. If you look at things like magnetic vice and any other toggle permenant magnet on and off devices as inspiration (and teaching devices for how magnets work) it would be easy to create that sword carrier 'sheath' that concentrates the magnetic forces as you need, can be shaped to hold the sword using the blades bevel as a register - thus keeping it at the desired angle to the belt and could even be toggled to release by a pulling on the sword in the right direction to rotate the magnet cover over the top so you don't have to slide the blade all the way past the magnet, might be a touch harder to get it to reset on its own, perhaps spring loaded - but lets face it you want to grab your sword fast, taking a moment to reset the magna-scabard isn't any worse than trying to line a blade up for a normal scabbard.. Edit: Struck me I should clarify - the toggle able permanent magnet devices basically have a moveing magnet or plate that does what Shad discovered and contains all that magnetic flux. You can also get far better force from magnets by pairing a N and S pole on two magnets to be bridged by what you want to grip, which I saw no evidence Shad figured out. Also more power to Shad to playing around with it. Did very much enjoy the tomfoolery, and I too have lost skin to powerful rare earth magnets (salvaged from HDD) - though my chemistry teacher nearly lost his fingers to a pair I gave him (some old HDD had about 1cm thick rare earths in a pair - I gave him a pair of those and warned him to not get his fingers in the way once he managed to seperate them, his fingers were black and blue next time I saw him... Fun guy). But the point being its great to experiment, but there is physics worth learning involved! As physics is interesting!

Kind of a nitpick, but if you can uphold historical accuracy in others, now it's my turn to talk about physical accuracy: The force of a magnet does NOT go down exponentially with distance. It goes down proportionally to the square of the distance, meaning it goes down parabolically or in more general terms polynomially.
