Can I do this if I've not hemstitched? would I carefully knot up towards the work and then twist and knot again?

You sure can! You can also twist fringes without knotting first. Each technique brings its own challenges and give a different look. It's up to you!

@@thumpr1 Yes, that is a possibility, especially with a slippery fibre. But if you handle it carefully, a grippy wool can stay in place while twisting. You can do whatever method is comfortable to you.
