Spinel is more evil. he put up a fake scam ad to lure liko, proceeded to erase liko’s memories when the fake ad worked, stole the pendant and got the job done… and if it werent for dot he wouldve succeeded as well as leave an amnesiac liko behind. he didnt hesitate to use the rakurium, a substance that makes pokemon go berserk on his umbreon, a pokemon that evolves via FRIENDSHIP. in that very same episode, he lured amethio and liko into a cave, with intentions of *KILLING* them, and when they escaped the next episode he recorded amethio helping liko, framing amethio and getting him kicked out of the explorers. spinel couldnt unalive amethio, so he ruins his life instead. since pokemon horizons is still airing and he’s already this irredeemable, he’ll definitely do more evil in the future. i wouldnt be surprised if he gets a similar fate to hunter J

Here's something to think about: we see Pokeballs get lost or buried for up to years on end. In this exact series, James just straight up lost his Carnivine since childhood in a box of bottle caps. J's Pokemon are rotting at the bottom of the sea. As Weazy points out, they could've been stolen. And what about the practical country's worth of Golbats her goons had? Did they want this? Did they ask for this? And what about the Pokemon she stole? What about little Timmie's Tepig that was petrified to be sold to Thatcher T. Moneybags? Is he just eroding? Are they conscious? J's death was super dramatic for Pokemon standards. Normally, Future Sight is supposed to attack the Pokemon, but no. Salamence had already been recalled to its pokeball. The Lake Trio targetted HER. She messed with the powers of Pokemon that were basically minor gods of the Sinnoh region and had her entire ship, crew, her pokemon and herself struck out of the sky and sent to a watery grave. Arceus really sided with the lake trio and said, "Nah, fuck jail time. You will perish for your heresy."

Pokemon Hunter J was an interesting villain because she wasn’t a clown like Team Rocket or had some grandiose plan like most Evil teams after Giovanni, and was actually successful as a villain. Most of the Pokemon she captured apart from the ones involved in the episodes we see of her were sold off to whatever clients she had. It’s such a departure from the usual Pokemon villains since she was able to get away from with most of her heists. I know that the show is meant to be for younger viewers and usually ends each episode on a happy note, but it’s fascinating to see a villain who’s not only evil in a way that’s realistic, but is actually good at her job most of the time.

Honestly, J was such an iconic badass of a villain and she really stood out in the anime- I just wish she had more episodes! I loved how she was SO evil that the only way to stop her was in death. The writers cooked so hard when they added her to the show! She's become one of my favourite villains of all time because she stole the spotlight for every scene she was in. Hunter J was the closest the anime got to the hardcore antics of the Pokémon manga. The anime is usually so squeaky clean that it's boring filler. Hunter J, Paul, Sinnoh in general, really elevated the Gen 4 era of Pokémon. Imagine if Palworld gets an anime, it's gonna be a lot of Hunter J level antics but taken to 11 on some Attack on Titan level of insanity.

J is the most underrated villain in the entire Pokemon franchise. It's a crime that the manga and the games never used her and she never returned in the anime either. The bounty hunter who was after Latios and Latias in Ash's second to last episode even stole her gimmick, so why didn't they just use J herself?
