As an enduser, I was able to create websites easily using HTML. There were several endless things to do on the Internet in the late 90s. Several sites allowed people create webpages about their interests. There was no censorship. We didn't care about copyright. In many ways the late 90s internet was more exciting than the net today.

@@theexalius7947 The net now has many advantages in comparison to two decades ago, but in times passed - it felt like there were no restrictions. We could upload whatever we wanted, without fear of it being censored, and we did not difine ourselves by our politics. I understand with a mainstream net there must be rules and laws, but a small minority of people appear to believe they have the right to dictate what stays on the net irrespective of the opinions of the majority.

The actual main difference between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 is the rise of Javascript, Web 1 was HTML and now Web 2 is JS

Web2 is more than JS, HTML/CSS are also not what they used to be. The entire space has developed hugely.

@@henkondemand Yea 100%, but JS is really the key to web2 as without it, you would just have websites that look really good but don't actually function. JS allows the developer to offload tasks that used to be handled by the server onto the browser, resulting in less server resources being used. It also allows the the server & browser to communicate through the backend eliminating the need for constant refreshes. Without JS, many things we enjoy today would not be possible; though do I agree, Web2 is a combination of HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, PY/CGI, etc.. and their collective advancements but I feel like JS is the main one to really change how the internet as a whole operates.

Yes, similar to what you and others in this thread say: partial page loads, single page apps, CSS frameworks, JAM-stack style apps, async loading etc. for me defined Web 2.0. After all, forums, blogs, e-commerce (including the auction site that became eBay) and early social media existed in the mid 90’s, but until the early-mid 2000’s these were largely full page reloads for every action, backed by old school PHP (IIRC Facebook effectively forked php for their needs early on), JSP, ASP etc. In Web 2.0 JS is used to get smaller bits of content from API to build the view, the used to post actions & data to APIs without the whole page reloading (& often without the user doing anything)

HTML is not dynamic but rather static, If you are trying to say a markup language is responsible for the things a programming language does, please go and actually code something, because you are completely false. HTML does nothing but defines the meaning and structure of said web content. If you think it does anything else you are clearly not a programmer; and probably shouldn't be speaking on it.

One of the main issues I see with web3 is the idea of decentralization. Many web3 fans talk about the beauty of owning everything you post because of blockchain and about having your own personal portal to the internet or something. The thing is that this idea is already failing. Most DApps are relying on 2 or 3 different api providers to interact with the blockchain. The content behind NFTs has to be on a server somewhere for the link that is saved in your token to work. If the server fails or gets deleted you NFT is only some random url. The content you bought in form of a NFT could just change after you bought it because you dont control the server. Its already not working as intended. In the end some (maybe new) big companies will control most of the infrastructure behind all these cool new services and nothing really changed. Another problem is that throwing a blockchain on everything you see (Twitter posts for example) is completly useless. Why should i own a token of my last Tweet? The idea of owning something because you have the NFT is also complete nonsense. Buying NFT Art doesnt give you the copyright of the art. It just proves that you own an NFT that links to a picture. Its even worse than buying an actual physical painting because you can't even change it if you want.

If web3 is just decentrelization, coulldnt u just use torrenting so the website owner uploads updates and then users share the website update, this way users can get better load times and might require less webservers, obveyusly it would be more complicated but that is kinda how i think it could work, also if it has a backend then maybe it could be done by using the stuff i mentioned before to update it and maybe do it the way crypto mining does it... by sharing the workload

Might not be the exact way it's done in this particular case, but you can achieve very similar results with a script called Handy Seamless Transitions for After Effects. This script is very widely used and abused in motion graphics to the point where you can instantly recognize some of the transitions.

Doubt it. Facebook-Meta is still a centralised silo, the antithesis of web3 decentralisation. With the benefit of hindsight, the current state of the globe's economies is what burst the bubble, with the value of money falling, crypto and fiat alike, making investors get cold feet. Web3 decentralisation will wax and wane for a while, but ultimately I hope people will see that we need to escape data silos. Its already happened with the exodus of twitter users to the fediverse, and I think that will just gather momentum from here on out.

Telnet was replaced with SSH (Secure SHell), MUDs are still around if you know where to look, but most people moved to multiplayer games with better graphics. Much of web3 seems to have been inspired by the days when you could just run your own server, but you only ever hear about blockchain because that's what makes investors money.
