I wish that these doctors were here to explain the procedure and complications when I had my tmj replacement. My surgery went well and I am 2 weeks post op but my doctor lacked these explanations and I was scared when I couldn’t move my right side of my face. I still have paralysis on the right side which is stressful but I am recovering pretty well.

I got TMJ in 7th grade.. I remember the day it first popped etc. it was after I got braces off and all that jaw shifting. Now in college and it still bothers me, not physically but it’s annoying that it pops out and in and out of place etc.. it doesn’t hurt but if it’s a lot and consistent it’ll hurt and my jaw has locked before..

My dad has bone on bone TMJ. His teeth breaking off to the gums. Agent Orange is the culprit. We like in Southern Georgia 🇺🇸. The military has only given him 80%. So we are stuck. 37+ years he gave in service in the Protection of our country, and the VA Won’t help. He has had CTs X-rays MRI and Therapy. But you can still hear him across the dining room table. His pain is also growing more each day. Wish there was someone that could help…

I just wanted to say thank you for posting the video answering some questions. I’m a 37yr old female who struggled with tmj problems since I was a child, so On June 5th I had bilateral total joint replacement at The University of Miami Hospital , needless to say it’s been a tough ride and trying to find videos of others who’ve gone through it or even what’s to be expected after surgery, is few and far between. I am one of the small percentage that lost functionality of the left eyebrow and I’ve had a lot of pain all around the eye socket, would you possibly be able to tell me if this is a normal pain? When I asked the surgeon he had said it was Not normal, but I thought I’d ask if you’ve heard of a patient complaining of pain in that area. I know I’m only at about 6 weeks post operative, but I’ve been worried about the left side, in fact all the way down my ear to the jaw line is in pain but the right side is doing fantastic...perhaps that’s why I’m a bit more worried, with one side being great from surgery and the other causing a great deal of discomfort. Some of the left side pain is in the temple area, usually starting in the later afternoon, it feels as though a knot is being pulled tight around the area and it’s absolutely relentless! Hope I didn’t talk your ear off, as I’ve felt quite alone in this journey, I just thought it would be nice to hear from another surgeon familiar with the procedure. Thank you for your time, I truly appreciate it! Corey W Palm Beach, Fl

What about mobility? Have you lost side to side mobility?

I hope your issues have subsided. I too am from FL but had my bilateral joint replacements & revision done out of state- had to fly to Dallas. The healing would probably would have gone a bit better had the mentioned risk factors not been the case-especially prior failed bilateral LeForte 1 osteomies. Just as these surgeons state, finding the correct surgeon & asking every question, reading up on any of their publications, is the lesson I try to tell others considering any oral surgery, but especially this procedure. I waited/avoided the necessary revision while pain levels increased. There were about 9 procedures required w/ bilateral jaw joint replacements which took 16 hours. 3 years later I still have weakness in my lower right lip. I lost cold/hot sensitivity in the lower lip and chin. Both ears and joint area are numb, I still haven’t gotten used to that. Part of my scalp on the right side was completely numb for the first couple years and has come back. The facial nerve branch discussed in this video really helped me to understand why certain things are still numb and may or may not return. I had about 40 prior screws & bone plates with 15 years of bone growth (in addition to the joint replacements) to be removed all during the same procedure, which is partly why the surgery was 16 hours. I hope that your eye is better- I still have trouble with my right eyebrow, which is delayed in responding as is the right side of my mouth. Thank you for sharing your experience. I definitely could relate to the lack of eye and eyebrow movement. Pretty sure I wore an eye patch for a year.

@@AnthonySanchez1 I did lose side to side mobility, it’s extremely minimal to what I can do, for example, trying to use my tongue to get something out of my teeth. This month marks one year from my surgery and I try to move my mouth around as much as possible but I can tell the joints just aren’t built that way. However, I can now say (after almost 8 straight months of pain) that it was really worth it!!

@@k.elizabeth4013 wow, you have been thru quite an ordeal! My eyebrow finally regained movement about 7mths after the surgery. I still have facial numbness and tingling by my ears and the nerves shoot directly to the corners of my mouth. I also still have this sensation when I eat or drink anything with flavor it’s as though I’m biting into a hundred lemons, my whole mouth contracts as if it’s sour but after a couple bites or drinks, it’s normal - but it’s still really bizarre. I agree when you said the facial nerve beach discussed by the doctors in this video helped, it did for me as well. I do hope that you get the feeling back in your ears also, mine are just still a bit numb on my face, directly next to my ears and I still have pain in my temples and the end of the day. Thank you for writing in here, it’s really nice to be able to talk to someone who’s gone thru something similar, although I believe you’ve had it a lot more rough than I have and I truly hope you’re getting better every day! 🤗

I too have a TMJ / TMD problem on both the jaw joints since more than 6 years now and I have had an arthroplasty surgery for left side of my jaw joint in the year 2015 13th of July but unfortunately it did not helped me with pain and started having the same issues I had before the surgery I saw several tmj surgeon almost I guess 9 surgeons in total including Dr Gary Warburton when he came to India Mumbai for a seminar in D.Y. Patil dental college I met him there and almost everyone said that I need a total joint replacement surgery for both my jaw joints but those questions that the doctors answered the one which is most concerning to my parents is that for how long will the joints last and will I to get resurgery and also the nerve that tackles sensation and feeling on my face will it be possible for it to come back or will it be gone forever and after watching this video almost all my questions are cleared and will share this video with my parents thank you so much for your sharing this video it is the most helpful one lots of love from India Mumbai 🥰😘❤️

This is an excellent video. I saw Dr. Warburton back in 2019 and was supposed to go back for a follow up in a year. Due to covid, it didn’t happen. Unfortunately, I now have the bony growth over my previous implant and need two surgeries to fix it. One to take out the implant and put in a spacer. Then to come back for the custom joint replacement. Frightening! But this video really helped.

I’ve been struggling with what I thought was tmj for over 6 years. Recently I found out through a specialist that it wasn’t tmj and it was actually a joint deformity. My joints on both sides are apparently smaller than average which causes me lots of pain and discomfort. My jaw has locked for months at a time, to the point where I can’t even put my pinky finger in my mouth. Eating can be a big challenge when my jaw locks like that. I’ve been told there’s nothing I or anyone can do for my jaw and that it’s just something I have to manage for the rest of my life. I’ve been to 2 specialist who recommended me not getting this surgery, if absolutely needed later in life would be better. Probably cause I’m still young. It’s challenging dealing with pain every day sometimes but I’ve learned how to ignore it. The only thing that has ever helped me deal with the constant discomfort (besides medication) has been peppermint oil. I’m not sure exactly why this helps but it has helped me. I’ve looked a lot on the internet for ways to manage my issue or just help ease the discomfort. Nothing has ever worked for me besides peppermint oil. It doesn’t fully get rid of my pain but it helps ease it.
