@KingARSENAL14 I give him his props when they're due. I've said on multiple occasions that I DO like Reasonable Doubt. The question was are there lines on there that are comparable with Biggie. My feeling was no. I'm not off at all. It's my personal opinion. I'm not telling anyone they're not allowed to like Jay-Z. Me and the guys have had discussions like this before. Jay fans really get offended if you don't like him. And I just don't get why. Like...who cares? Anyway, thanks for the comment!

@meazy757 Yes. Jay-Z was a sidekick. I agree. As a matter of fact, if Big didn't put Jay on some of his songs, he would not have had the exposure he had. He took advantage of that situation though no doubt. Very good point made. People don't know that Jay-Z was just trying to find a way in the game and it opened wide for him. I'll take it even further, if he didn't have that "Annie" song, we would not have a Jay-Z. That was his commercial song that blew him up.

Saying Jay-Z is not at least one of the greatest is like saying the Lakers are not one of the greatest teams of all time. Or the Yankees aren't the greatest baseball team. It's just because he's so big, people feel the need to completely disregard Jay's amazing discography. Put it like this, Myke's fav rapper probably would say he was wrong saying Jay's not on of the greatest. I do think Kanye is surpassing Jay right now. But Jay is a monster. Straight up.

@freechildgold I agree with your use of the Joe Budden line, but not in this respect. If I'm reading you wrong, I apologize, but if you're trying to imply that I'm not savvy because I don't care for Jay that presumptuous and ignorant. Not everyone HAS to like everything because the masses tell you to. I don't care for Jay-Z. Would I read his lyrics? No, I don't have to. I've heard them. They bore me. If you like him, that's cool. But I don't. That simple. Again, if I read you wrong, sorry.

@freechildgold That's why I think Jay can go toe to toe with Biggie. Big is dope but his catalog is small and his legendary status is propelled by his death. Not saying it isn't deserving because Biggie would eat a lot of mediocre emcees these days but Jay is nice, clever, and technical. He can hang with him.

Biggie had a better verse than Jay-Z on Brooklyn's Finest, Love The Dough, and Young G's...be real Reasonable Doubt wasn't this big time album in 96 and wasn't considered that special until 5 years later Jay-Z started calling it a classic. If you were a hip hop fan in 96 you know Jay-Z was sidekick status -- jsut being real

Jay-Z was better than Biggie lyrically in the 90's Big had the smooth flow and hard similies. Jay might be a quite tad advanced with metaphors and double/triple entendres and wordplay can be even between the two.

to me its like people always underrate or overrate jayz. people either say he suck because of some illuminati reason. or that hes the best rapper ever. hes ok maybe a top 30 rapper. his lyrics are pretty good. and he has a few good albums like reasonable doubt the blueprint 1 and 2 and the black album but all of his other albums arent really that great. they'll have a few good songs tho. although people should give him his props for the 4 albums i mentioned.

@encdee Kool G Rap is legendary...and alot of rappers were influenced by him..that is a fact but just b/c someone likes Jay-Z does not mean that they don't have " a developed frame of referene" ( i liked how you put that by the way) It's obvious you are not a fan of Jay-Z but have you really listened to him or are you just speaking off a couple of songs you have heard? You cannot judge Jay-Z off the new music he puts out b/c he is now trying to appeal to his fanbase..which is understandable.

@freechildgold Yeah i can see why. I personally like 2pac over big and jay. And i have a lot of all three of their music, it's just my preference you know but i think biggie is a very close second. Even though his flow isn't up there with big and jays his lyrics hit the heart more for me. But people have different criteria for what they like out of rappers and what makes a rapper ''great'' in the end it's all opinion and preference. :)

obviously the reason people think Jay is the "best" (or even good) is because they are not rigorous listeners of hip hop and don't have a developed frame of reference. thus making it possible to admire his "skill" (I guess...) Listen to Cannon Fire by Kool G Rap. He uses one syllable as the rhyme scheme of each verse. show me Js equivalent!

I think I understand what people mean, Jay is in my top 3 of all time but I could see the criticism. Most underground hip-hop heads love punchlines,Jay is not a punchline rapper. He's extremely lyrical he's just not trying to punchline you into a coma like a Canibus or Big L would. I agree with you and Myke to a degree, if I'm listening for punchlines Jay is a boring ass rapper, but when I'm listening for little clever shit Jay is that dude.

i agree with Myke on how Kanye won't reach Jay's legend status, but saying Jay's better as an artist?? really? with how Kanye's changed much of the image of hip hop creatively and how you wouldn't have a number of acts out there today without his influence on the genre, and that's not even mentioning his production/songwriting skills where i'll say Jay is only better at rapping overall.

Jay-z doesnt even show up on my radar. Maybe if people didnt try to promote his a significant MC (what to speak of the best?!?!) I wouldnt be so gassed when the topic comes up. In all honesty, i respect people who are average rappers alot. Ones who rhyme out of love for hip hop are dope, even if they are "average". Prime example, Evidence of Dilated (no offence intended). I like dude alot, flow is average but his emcee work wholehearted and done out of love for hip hop.

Kanye is just staying more relevant in my opinion cause anything he does or says goes viral pretty much and Jay Z aint really doing much... MCHG was a let down while Yeezus was looked at as great by the majority.. plus he got swish coming soon-ish, i aint heard shit about Jay in a while...
