I was in the market for a high value 30.06 rifle and discovered your video. I just received my Webley & Scott Empire for under $500 including tax and transfer fees. It was the last one they had. You weren't kidding about the the beauty of the bluing and the walnut stock. The action is very smooth and the trigger is excellent (mine's just under 3 lbs). The bolt looks great too! What a bargain! Can't wait to take it out and see what it can do! Thanks for the information. I really enjoy and appreciate your no nonsense videos.
@GunBlue4905 жыл бұрын
That's terrific. I have not yet tried mine with the walnut stock, but with the Hogue stock mine has been routinely shooting half to 3/4 MOA with 155 grain Sierra Match King Palma bullets, and averages slightly over MOA with flat base Sierra 150 grain spitzers at reduced 2,650 fps midrange hunting loads that approximate the old 300 Savage. I'm sure you can expect likewise with the proper ammo. Good luck with your new gun.
@Gola3085 жыл бұрын
Update and range report. Trigger pull reduced to 2.6 pounds after a bit of dry firing. Added a Warne one-piece scope base rail, Weaver rings, and a Burris 3x9 Fullfield II rifle scope. Extremely accurate with factory ammo (so far). American Eagle 150 grain M1 Garand ammo shoots .85-.9 inch groups at 100 yards. Federal 168 grain Berger Hybrid Hunter ammo performed even better with a .75 inch group at 100 yards. Great shooter with the Hogue stock. Only small problem I see is the finish on the trigger guard is chipping a bit, I think because of bumping it with the steel magazine.

Great review. I was in the market for a new rifle for larger UK deer as my Sako .308 has to go back to Finland for many months for a new bolt after that was stolen in a burglary. I've heard of the quality of Howa built rifles and whilst not quite such a bargain in the UK as USA (we don't get the two stock deal) is still very good value with the synthetic stock. I've ordered one. Thanks for the tip!

I first watched this episode just after you posted, and was actually falling asleep. When I saw that the rifle stock had mysteriously changed, I thought I was going crazy. Evidently, my eyes were a little sleepy during the hocus pocus portion. Beautiful! Well, the folks at Howa are either gonna love you or hate you! I can just see the inundation of orders swamping the ordering desk. Better put on another shift, Howa! That rifle would be cool in an old Rigby or H&H calibre too. Great VideoGunblue Thanks again for all the wonderful content.

Webley & Scott Empire at that price point? Wow! That is one be-you-te-ful rifle. It looks a bit like sitting in a Rolls-Royce feels - beauty and quality built in by people who still care. I've actually been keeping my eye out for a nice .30-06 rifle to replace the pre-64 Remington that I sold too many years ago in a moment of stupidity. The fine attention to detail is lovely, and refreshing to see on a "factory" rifle. I bet it would be a really nice rifle chambered in .270 also. Many Thanks for sharing this.

Having stumbled upon your ideal deer rifle vid, and now this one, I might suggest a rifle you may find to your liking. The CZ 557 Carbine. Although discontinued, it can still be found at a "reasonable" price. It's a shorter "carbine" barrel giving it an overall length close to the 30-30, however it's chambered in 30-06 (or other calibers - 308 detachable mag was designed for the Canadian rangers before they opted for a Tikka model in similar design). My particular model has the drop plate internal mag style. Factory installed iron sights with quick detach Talley scope rings give you the best of both worlds without losing your zero. In regards to build quality, it's made like a tank. Adjustable trigger as well .. mine came set at 2.5 lbs from the factory. Anyway, great channel and you sir are a wealth of information.

Truly a nice rifle with more goodies included than the buyer first notices. I bought one in 270Win...Notice the NYLON SHIM in the receiver bridge that eliminates the wearing of the bolt jeweling. The 2 stage trigger is extremely snappy. While heavier than I prefer, the WB will allow for a steady rest for accurate shot placements when rested. The wood can be compared to higher grade figured walnut. Alas, mine didn't come with the Hogue accessory stock and mine was over $650 out the door. I eventually sold it back to the dealer as I decided it was a tad too heavy, I'm not a fan of removal magazInes, and the wood was too gorgeous to take into the field.

Incredible value. When compared to today’s economy priced rifles with cheap plastic stocks that sell for just over $300 this rifle is hands down probably the best value I’ve seen in years. The two stocks alone should cost that much. Thanks for sharing now I’m looking at purchasing one more rifle I don’t really need! I’d also be curious as to any changes in the rifles point of impact after changing stocks. I’d like to display the rifle with its wood stock in a cabinet and hunt with the synthetic stock.

Great special effects swapping those stocks ! That is an excellent deal. I've never heard of a rifle in that price range having pillar bedding. When I first saw your rifle it took me back to the 90s with a 3006 that I had it was a H&R rifle. It also shot lights out it was the most accurate rifle I ever had and I bought it for next to nothing in a gun show in Fairbanks Alaska even though it just had a cheap Tasco 4X. I'm seriously going to look into that that looks like a very high-quality rifle for the price. If you had done the entire review and then ask people what it cost I would have thought it was at least $1200 or more. What scope will you put on it for your purpose? I think Lyman or Williams aperture would work really well. On a different subject I've been seriously thinking about getting an M1A now I have a dilemma of Fulton armory, Springfield armory, James River armory? I've keep going back and forth between them. Fulton armory the only one I've never heard anything negative about? But none of them are cheap. It would kind of be a do everything gun for me target shooting hunting home defense and I love the aperture sights I wouldn't put a scope on it. Tell me what you think? I've also thought about a CMP M1 Grand also ? Thank you I always enjoy your videos.

I noticed these rifles when they 1st offered them, I think I got the catalog too. I think they offered them 1st in 30-06 and 270. Not sure if others followed. Ive often thought about getting a howa or a vanguard, have not yet. Not sure what caliber Id go with. Was back and forth on a 25-06. I have shot one in 308, and I was quit impressed with the Nikko Stirling scope it came with. I think my friend will be happy with it. One thing I noticed with Howa/Vanguards is they seem a bit heavier in weight by about 1/2 lb compared to other brands. Not always a bad thing, depending on what your doing with it.
@GunBlue4905 жыл бұрын
It is a heavier gun. For carrying all day, it's a liability, but for shooting the grand 30-06 with heavy bullets and simply having fun busting targets, the weight is welcome. They have been made in other calibers, but availability seems sketchy right now. It's possible that Howa schedules runs of their various rifles over the course of the year, and the Webley & Scott are now off cycle.

Hey gunblue, question for ya! I picked up a 30-06 and I want to love it, but I'm worried it packs too much punch for Northeast whitetail. What style of bullet and grain weight would you suggest to preserve shoulder meat? 150, 165, 180? Flat nose, round nose, soft point, hollow point, ballistic tip?
@fdegeorge20003 жыл бұрын
The 30-06 is a very versatile cartridge. For white tale. I use 150 gr ballistic tip boat tail running just a little under 3000’ per second. Shots in the neck or behind the shoulder in the ribs work well. I have had one or another 06 for about 45 years and have never been disappointed. From moose to mouse the 30-06 will never let you down. A Leupold 3 x 9 scope set on 3 power and you’re good for the north east woods ( I hunt NY state) The more you use it the more you will love it. Don’t let people give you a hard time, the 06 isn’t a highly specialized cartridge it simply does it all. Good luck,be safe and god bless

One bullet for hunting deer is legendary in Pennsylvania. I have used them for over 50-years hunting in the woodlands for deer, and bear. It does not matter if you hunt with a 358win, 35rem, 30-06spr, 308win or 280rem. They are round nose soft point Remington Core-Lokt Bullets. They just work and cost less to use. They plainly shoot well and put game down period. Videos of hunters shooting game at or past 300-yards are theatrics. Responsible hunting guides do not recommend doing it and most do not permit clients to do it on trophy class animals. So using super-duper specialized bullets provide no advantage period. If you go to the Alaska Fish and Game website, they recommend a 30-06 rifle for all species’ and 180gr to 200gr well-constructed bullets. (Core-Lokt Bullets) fit the recommendation. The reason for pointed bullets is that most hunters have pointed heads. I bought a good supply long ago and bullets do not have any expiration date that I am aware of as of this moment. Hunting is not bench-rest shooting little groups on paper; hunting bullets kill animals quickly and consistently. Core-Lokt Bullets are proven and worked for a very long time for very many hunters. You should try some 180gr soft points even if you cannot find Core-Lokt Bullets.

My friend and I bought "twins". I firelapped mine, moly tumbled the bullets. He didn't. My rifle shot sub‐moa, his got acceptable 2" groups. (New military manufacture.) We swapped, and the results swapped with us. Hard to argue with that?
@GunBlue4905 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do argue with that premise. Rifle twins can have different preferences for loads, and if his gun was shooting 2 inch groups, it was not a lapping issue. Lapped barrels improve by tenths of an inch, not by inches. His rifle or group sizes have issues that have any number of causes, which have nothing to do with lapping.

They made rifles, pistols and shotguns over the years for civilians and the military. Their side by side shotguns are well thought of and still widely available second hand in the UK - they stopped making them about 1980.

You had me at 30-06 lol. Sure, .308 is good and all, but when it comes down to it, it's still an "intermediate" cartridge. It may be at the top-end of intermediate cartridges, but it's still intermediate.
@mannys91305 жыл бұрын
I don't consider .308 Win intermediate at all. 5.56x45 is an intermediate. 7.62x39 is an intermediate. .300 Blackout, 9x39, 5.45x39 are all intermediates. .308 is way too powerful to be considered one as well. It's definitely a full size battle rifle cartridge.

@@mannys9130 You may not see it that way, but .308 is a necked-down, less powerful version of the .30-06 cartridge, with minor differences in projectile dimensions, mostly with the goal of making it more aerodynamic. It's the very definition of an Intermediate cartridge, and one of the first at that. They just decided it wasn't as light as they were going for, so they went another notch down the ladder, and thus 5.56/.223 was born, not because it was better, but because it was lighter, more controllable and cheaper to produce. Just because .308 is the one of the most powerful of the Intermediate cartridges doesn't make it not Intermediate. You're thinking about the term "Intermediate" the wrong way. All it means is that it's bigger/more powerful than a pistol cartridge, and smaller/less powerful than a full-on rifle cartridge, like .300 WinMag or .338 Lapua for example. In the scheme of things, even cartridges that have bigger projectiles than .308, like .50 Beowulf and 6.5 Grendel (popular in "Meat-Eater" circles) are considered Intermediate, since they're both essentially highly scaled-up pistol cartridges. Also, I digress, but Russia's approach to Intermediate cartridges came at things from a totally different angle until the Americans started doing the same thing. To the Americans, an Intermediate cartridge was, at least initially, simply a smaller version of a rifle cartridge. To the Russians, it was a bigger version of a pistol cartridge, which is evidenced by the fact that a 7.62x39 round is essentially all projectile. The casing, propellant and case-head account for a very small percentage of its total length. 5.56, on the other hand, is all casing and propellant. The projectile itself is miniscule. Where 7.62x39 kills through sheer brute force, 5.56 kills through its screaming-hot speed and subsequent projectile fragmentation once it hits its target.

@@MFKR696 .300 Win mag and .338 Lapua are both large magnum sized rifle cartridges, so I don't think it's fair to say .308 Win is an intermediate compared to those. If your argument is that it was an intermediate back then when the definition of intermediate was different, I posit that you can't hold that opinion today since the definition has changed far from that previous one. In today's existence, .308 isn't intermediate. It's on the smaller size of full power rifle cartridges, not the bigger side of intermediates.

@@mannys9130 I'm not here to argue with you. You can either take the 100% verifiable information I've given you or you can leave it. If not, it's your loss not mine, and I don't really care if you take issue with my choice of examples. The point stands. Am I being fairly clear?

@@MFKR696 6.5 Grendel is a 6.5 caliber cartridge. .308 is a 7.62. 6.5 is not bigger, it's not even close. And while you are right about the Russian philosophy I wouldn't say the 7.62x39 is even close to a pistol bullet.

I wonder if wax paper placed between the barrel and wood during months of storage would stretch the wood and give you that free float gap you are looking for, you just disassemble the gun before going hunting , take the paper "shim" out and re-screw the stock back on, I don't know if you could steam the stock first or ?......best try this technique on a throw away gun first

Hi gunblue. I would like to know if i can hunt long range with my 270, because all of the 270’s ballistics is better than most of the other long range guns except the ballistic Coefficient. My friend argued with me that i cannot shoot long range with my 270 but doesn’t give me a reason why not. He says that a 260 is much better. I did alot of research and almost every aspects of the 270 is better. Thanks hope you have a great day...

The 270 Winchester was designed for Long Range Hunting. 130 grain bullets and you're good to 600 yards. Nobody should be hunting game past 400 yards. Look up Jack O'Connor, he designed the 270 Winchester back in 1924 your friend is definitely on drugs, have him pee in a cup. Good luck!
