I must say that F Raphael’s mumbling as a stand-in for Kubrick’s voice is quite hilarious

He's grumpy and cantankerous, but I also think he's very honest and insightful!

Never saw the Eyes Wide Shut film because I really can’t stand Tom Cruise and the idea of having to watch him make love to some woman was just too creepy. Ick. But Raphael’s description of working with Kubrick is priceless. He’s a delight and a great storyteller.

The only sexual excitement in the whole movie is in Bill's fantasies about Alice and the naval officer.

Raphael states that in EWS that the Pot Smoking Scene leads into a Sexual situation but in the film it leads to an argument.

tomcat1020 It leads to the wife confessing her sexual fantasy, perhaps that's what he means

he just meant they're using it with the intention of going into a sexual situation, and it's that artificial stimuli that leads alice to confessing her fantasies, rather than the whole thing organicaly resulting from bill and alice alone. although I can see what he means by that and agree with him for the most part, I believe kubrick might have made that change to make the storytelling more concise, making alice's change in behaviour more believable without necessarily needing to spend too much time building up to it

Raphael has Kubrick's nervy Bronx Jew accent/demeanor to perfection.

Guy has a foggy memory lmao The weed doesnt lead to sex, it leads to alice confessing to sexual fantasies of men other than her husband, bill. In essence, the weed makes her more open and frank, revealing the ugly truth of their marriage to Bill. His reaction to this is what basically propels the rest of the story into motion. The weed was a great idea by kubrick because it plays well into the theme of having your eyes opened (eyes wide shut) which leads to bill's sort of "wake-up call" or enlightenment to the things that lie in the subconscious of his marriage that he wishes not to face. I mean, as a nice touch, the phone litterally rings after alice finishes confessing - a wake up call!

I don't think he paid particular attention to the final product, he was probably too busy thinking of how he could capitalize on Stanley's death by writing that self-glorifying trash of a book.

I believe Frederic said *revelations* AND sex in the first script instance and then 'reproach and excite each other' in the second "pot" edition. In any case, the admissions about sexual fantasies about other men existed in both scripts. Frederic Raphael wrote most of the film.... he's more than entitled to give his own opinion to a series of interviews asking him about his own work. If you want hagiographic kubrick love you can check out the dvd extras.

I agree. The weed scene is my absolute favourite in the film and the weed is a big part of it because it contributes to the male character's confusion, alienation and paranoia.

I think the shower curtain = the curtain the Wizard hides behind in the Wizard of Oz movie and Alice in the bathroom has determined to get a look behind the curtain of her husband's persona.

Sounds Very kubrickesque. Universally regarded as really difficult to work with. I also agree with Raphael about the pot. Not a good idea in the context.
