What would you guys like to see in future BTS videos?

Not sure if this falls under bts, but I'm very interested in that handheld rig you have going for the a7III! Never seen someone use a shoulder strap/chest brace set up before like that and I'm curious what you like about it/how comfortable/convenient it is to use! Do you find if gives you a close-ish look to like an easy rig?

Thanks for posting this! I would love to know more about your handheld rig/gimbal/tripod/monopod setup, and how you gameplan for rapidly changing over the course of the day, and keeping the other components nearby and accessible. I'm always scrambling to have the right setup from one moment to the next. Would also love to see more about that sweet handheld rig.
@WeddingFilmSchool3 жыл бұрын
Sweet! Yah going to make a video on the handheld rig, and I've got the links to every piece put together on our gear kit page which is linked at the top of the video! As far as having the right stuff accessible I think having a second shooter or assistant goes a long way first off. Beyond that it's all about always thinking a few steps ahead, knowing what you will need where, and asking for what you need. For example if the schedule gets tight and I need to be in one place and then need something else for a different setup I have no issue saying hey I just need a minute I'll be right back. You're the professional, and there should be trust that you know what you are doing and what you need to make the best film possible. And when all else fails what you have on you should always be usable for most scenarios. If I ever get caught in a tough place whether with my gimbal setup or my handheld setup I can probably shoot whatever I need to shoot. Might not be my ideal way to shoot it but I can do it.

Loving your camera setup Bobby. It's exactly what I've envisioned in my head for my own rig. How is it weight wise and portability? I film adventurous wedding so do you think it would be a little too much for something to hike with etc? Just seen you mentioned about making a video for it. Will definitely check that out! Great video! It's good to see so many filmmakers various approaches!
@WeddingFilmSchool3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks it's a pretty fun setup. Weight wise I really don't have a gauge but most of the weight sits on your shoulders so it's not too bad. I can pick it up with one arm but wouldn't hold it that way for too long. My only issue with portability that I am trying to solve is when I'm not using that rig I'd like a way to rotate it to my back or something so it can be out of the way. Haven't perfected that aspect but that's a pretty small issue. I think you could hike with it if you didn't have to bring much else. You could also strip this down a bit. I'm also running the 24-70 which is a heavy lens. If I were hiking with it for an elopement I might take a smaller prime with me instead. Yah planning to do a video on it, in the next week or two probably. You can check out all the pieces of the kit here though! kit.co/WeddingFilmSchool

Nice video :) I have one question for your experience with wedding. Do you think, that clients are wonder about video quality? I think, if you will shoot wedding with a7III and next time you will use a7sIII, do you think that clients will say - oh there is a better dynamic range and colors than last video. Or they are wonder only about their story? My point is, how important for weddings is to have the newest cameras, and if someone will choose videographer because has a better image quality. Thank you for reply :)
@WeddingFilmSchool3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. I mean if your product looks VASTLY different then what is on your website or one of your films that they saw then yes, but your client will not notice the difference between any current camera. You are far better off having a camera that serves your purposes that you need than having the best. 99% of wedding filmmakers do not push their gear to its limits. Upgrading cameras does more for making your life easier than it does for the quality of your finished product.

@WeddingFilmSchool Жыл бұрын
I don't use a UV filter on any lenses. I now use the a7siii as my main camera but in either case I have a custom button assigned to swap between AF and MF. Sometimes I'll fully manual focus a shot but I don't like doing that with standard sony lenses which are fly by wire focusing. Instead sometimes I'll touch screen to grab focus and then switch to manual so that it doesn't keep hunting. Also during a ceremony a lot of times I will have certain cameras on MF. No you need to shoot at least double your frame rate so you'll need to be at 1/125th or higher

Great Video!. Do you find it easier to color correct and grade using no Picture Profile? Do you decrease sharpness in camera then add it back in editing?
@WeddingFilmSchool2 жыл бұрын
I (Bobby) don't feel like a major expert when it comes to color grading and I find that shooting in cine 4 or log, at least for me, ends up being more work and I sometimes find myself second guessing the grade I've done. I am happy with my colors and I can achieve that look with PP off so I'm content there I guess for the moment. I do not decrease sharpness
@dseamedia2 жыл бұрын
@@WeddingFilmSchool Thanks for the response. I find myself in a similar situation. I'm shooting a flat cin4. I'm constantly questioning my grade and know it can be better but can tune it to how I would like, also being red green color blind don't help. I think I'll try no PP for my next. Thanks! Do you have to mask out each shot to de-saturate the over saturated greens? Or do you just use your lut with minor adjustments?
@WeddingFilmSchool2 жыл бұрын
I don't typically do a color mask. My current wedding I'm working on there were a few shots that I had to so it's not like it never happens but that was more to match between cameras than it was for the look itself. Depends on your camera. If you have solid AF you can utilize a touch screen if you have it or your focus points. Or you can trust your cam to know what you want to focus on if it's a human or utilizing your various focus modes like zone or wide. If you're camera's AF isn't good, then of course you'll want to have the right settings but they will only help so much.

12:54 😂 gotta use the speed to get the shot. Also any reason you shoot with PP off on the Sony's instead of cine 4? Do you do any color grading to the final image?
@WeddingFilmSchool3 жыл бұрын
Haha! I shot cine 4 for like a year but the advantages didn't really seem worth it to me. I can get an image that I like with PP off with less work. An yah I do a grade for all of my weddings

What focal length you use for your cam and which focal for 2nd shooter ?
@WeddingFilmSchool3 жыл бұрын
We don't use just one. On the handheld setup we run a 24-70, gimbal is a 16-35, on the monopod usually a 50 or an 85 and on sticks you will see us using a 30mm, 100mm, 135mm, and 70-200mm
@martydenson_mfm3 жыл бұрын
I have never have more than 5-7min setup time before the ceremony starts. My brides refuse to put the dress on until about 15 min. before the ceremony is scheduled to start . (Bridal prep is only scheduled for 20 min total time & I'm competing with the photographer during that time).
@WeddingFilmSchool3 жыл бұрын
How long have you been doing video? One thing I have done more and more in the 14 years I've been shooting weddings is play a bigger role in the timeline and ask for what I need. I can't setup for a ceremony in 5 minutes so I would always look at their schedule and make those changes for them to allow them to get the best video possible. And if you feel like you can't really work alongside a photographer then show up earlier for bridal prep or something

@@WeddingFilmSchool I've been at it for almost 11 years. I shoot weddings in an area where they don't truly appreciate the craft.
